  1. But then again , if I wanted to roleplay something like TLD I'd use some low low low power and merilessly mercilessly mercilessly unforgiving system (did I mention low power and merciless unforgivingness?) such as Call of Cthulhu, so the poor characters would have a hard time surviving before meeting their doom on the sharp horn of Gnoph-keh, the hairy myth-thing of the Greenland ice, that walked sometimes on two legs, sometimes on four, and sometimes on six.

  2. Birch bark just falls off trees, like sticks. If you set up a base near birch trees and walk by regularly you'll be able to pick up some every day. As for dry food, I agree it seems weird not to find bags of legumes or grains (or flour, by the way) but it would need the addition of a whole new cooking process.

I noticed on my play through today that every time I became encumbered, I would have a sprain. Even stood still.

Again, are you sure it was a real sprain and not just a "sprain risk"? Sprain risk is just a warning, it means you're too tired and/or burdened and this increases the chances of hurting yourself, but it goes away when you drop some weight and/or rest.

  4. I wonder which creative way I'll find to make a fool of myself for the next update. One or two days before "Steadfast ranger" I finished opening the cargo containers on TM (so I found no revolver nor bullets and no energy drinks). When the "are you sure you want to eat raw meat?" message was introduced I managed to gulp down a raw wolf steak a couple hours before downloading the update, getting a nice (probably the last in the TLD world) poisoning and parasites combo. I'm really looking forward for the next one...

  5. I actually had no trouble with sprains. The "red slope" alert shows up sometimes, the sprain risk appears when tired and encumbered, but I didn't notice any increase in sprains. I only had that issue with no more than three sprains (yes, I think I deserved more) even if I was burdened, walking on a slope and repeatedly getting red flashes on the screen, but I guess it's being fixed.

  6. So I was set on overwatch, luckily the storm bolter didn't jam. No, that's another game. Whatever. Anyway, it was a nice shot.

Edit: watching the video I noticed there's an "aiming stamina" counter. There always was, after a while the arrow would go off by itself, but now it's visible. Good.

And by the way, OT, anyone up for opening a "share your videos" thread, or it would end up being so heavy it would clog the forum?

  7. Oh, well, I've never built a snow shelter, so I'm repeating things I've read. I think I've entered one I found in FM, but didn't sleep, it was on the Spence's side which is full of caves.

It is still possible to sleep down there and have the sprain recover.

Having auto-saves after sleeping will almost certainly ensure that you are not in an irrecoverable situation.

Tearing up your own clothes and picking up enough sticks for a shelter, I forgot that.

Afflictions causing autosaves is a way to limit the "oh, well, I messed up, I'll just exit the game and reload" and makes sense. On the other hand, being able to do it when nothong bad happened is good for easily distracted. If I'm starting to play and after a minute kids quarrel, my wife needs help and the cat is hungry I may be confused and head in the wrong direction, and I'd rather replay a few minutes than having to survive in the wrong place.

    Doc feral,

". . . the issue is about struggles with bleeding wounds but not sprains. "

The point that I was trying to make was not particularly about sprains.

I was trying to make the point that if an auto-save, for whatever reason,  was made when a player was in a position where he could neither advance or retreat, it would result in the game not being recoverable.

If they truly fixed the "traps" I can only think of two kinds of death sentence injuries. One is sprains while goating into a dead end, which may be deserved when you actively defy death. The other is quite sad to think about, getting stuck with a sprain and no bedroll or first aid at the bottom of the Broken Railroad ravine. That truly is a depressing perspective.

Apart from that, a bleeding wound from a struggle and no bandages is a death sentence most of the times, but it's part of the game.

Today I had an auto-save immediately after a sprain when I was in the middle of a almost vertical rockface.    This sprain, and auto-save, could easily have occurred when I was in a situation which was impossible to get out of.  If this happened the game would not be recoverable.

Among the "fixes" for the new update devs said they eliminated some of the "holes" where you could get unexplicably stuck. Anyway, sprains are out of the question, the issue is about struggles with bleeding wounds but not sprains.

  11. Something strange happened, and since it happened twice I'm starting to think it may be not strange anymore.
A while ago I commented somewhere about suffering a bleeding wound from a fight with a wolf, and that to my surprise it didn't trigger the autosave. Yesterday it happened again. I didn't notice, and I decided to quit and resume after a while, finding myself back in a bunker and thus losing some exploration time. I remember that serious afflictions (hypothermia, frostbite, sprains, poisoning, parasites...) triggered the autosave, and the same happened with bloodloss. I'm starting to be more careful so I don't go around hacking at wolves like I used to do, so after two such events I ask: have you noticed any difference in post-fight saves? Does a bleeding wound with no sprained joints cause the autosave or not?

  12. I came up with a nice conspiracy theory, about Will and Astrid living on Great Bear before their tragedy and breakup. But then I made a throwaway pilgrim run and checked: the house on Jackrabbit Island only has one single bed. There goes my theory about Will using the Jackrabbit name as a reminder of better times. But maybe it was Astrid who moved away to another  island, and Will remained alone and Misanthrope. But if that was the case he should know something about Graet Bear's geography. Oh well.

  13. Maybe it was under the ice. I've seen a wolf IN a river in Pleasant Valley, but it wasn't able to reach me and after a failed charge it panicked and fled, still under the ice. It could be that your wolf was less deep under the surface and managed to gnaw at you. And yes, it's a bug.

I've noticed a couple of details.

I kept walking like that along a slope (i call it crabwalking, for some reasons) and the screen flashed red several times, but no new sprains appeared despite having a still working ankle. Could it be that when a new sprain is "rolled" it's randomly placed and it may be wasted on an already sprained joint? Or does the "sprain risk" occupy an affliction slot, if something like that exists, preventing the sprain from having effect? Yes, I know I'm talking like a role playing game manual.

Despite new red flashes even the "pain" countdown didn't reset. That's weird and somewhat disappointing, it would make sense that hurting yourself again makes pain as stingy as before. I'd say sprain "dice" should be "rolled" even if no more limbs are available, just to push the pain recovery time back.
