Then there are shelters of all kind which are accessible whithout loading into it (e.g. Mountaineer's Hut in TWM, most caves).

Those are not considered indoors therefore are outdoors.

Not true. Mountaineer's Hut, the Bricklayer's Cottage, et al are considered indoors. So are the backs of caves. That's why you can dry pelts and guts in them. They will also contribute to Cabin Fever.

  2. Yeah, I mean, we get to see the remnants of their cache in the mine in survival mode; I think we can safely say that since it all fell in after the event and the utter lack of other humans in sandbox that they're long long gone by the time the survivor crashes at a random spawn point on GBI.

  3. I've been hanging out at Angler's for the last 22 days; that's how long it took for my survivor to heal all four of the broken ribs he got from the moose. I've been wandering around knocking between the Bitter Marsh and Anglers. It should be possible to survive here for a long long time overall, but it'll be rough. There's a super-productive rabbit grove and the occasional deer shows up, and the fishing hut in the Bitter Marsh has been invaluable while my guy's been recovering. The Narrow Falls Cave is a good spot, well away from predators and quite pretty, which is good wrt cabin fever.

I was in there the other night for just that reason (all those hours passing time and sleeping in Angler's tipped me over the edge) and after a couple nights in there I took some shots of my walk back to Anglers, and did a little circumbobulation around the island that Angler's is on and took some screenies. When I exited the cave it was snowing quite heavily but by the time I got back to the cabin it was clearing up.

Looking back towards the Narrow Falls:

Looking across the river towards the burned-out forest around Anglers from the waterfall at the Narrow Falls exit:

Went around the back end of the island to see if I could find a fir limb (nope, because fy that's why) and looked up towards Wolf Overlook:

The clouds and snow just wiped themselves away right after this shot; by the time I rolled around to change my angle it went from grey to blue:

In the name of the father, how the hell are you even alive. Frankly I never had multiple "broken ribs". I didn't even know that was possible. Oh my.

Heh, I've had two before, but never four. The thing about moose stompings is they don't destroy condition like wolf and bear attacks do... plus I have (had!) a good armour rating with mukluks, combat pants, and bearskin coat (picked up in AC on an earlier trip). However, I've got over ten days of curing before I can really get on the move again... and probably closer to twenty with the number of hours it's going to take me to finish off the last broken rib.

I know you can get up there seen it on ytube I think. May need some bandages though if you have some left?

Oh I chewed up a lotta bandages that day.

If you stim you you take a rope

Interesting. I've not tried that. Gonna see if I can figure out the goating route up there first though. Sounds like a fun challenge.

  5. First one will heal in 120 hours; they run up from there. Gonna be a while though; that's definitely going to take a couple-three weeks before I'll be back to normal....

I'll be heading back to Mountaineer's because I've got a lot of food etc there which will allow me to accelerate the recovery time... though maybe I'll see if I can figure out how to goat up from the fishing hut up to Foreman's while I'm all gimped out.

  6. It depends. The best time is when the amount of repair percent perfectly matches the missing condition to bring it up to 100%. What that time is depends very much on the item in hand. Check the wiki to shortcut figuring out what they are.

N.B. that you can repair really small items like the toque or socks from nearly zero to perfect, but you shouldn't wait that long because if you've got a 20% condition tuque and tangle with a bear you can pretty much guarantee that the toque's going bye-bye.

You should see the code for that thing. It's the single most complex part of the entire game algorithm-wise.

I can sort of see how that would be. For one, the paths of the snowflakes... there's a lot of complexity happening there depending on wind conditions. Also the multi-layered nature of the snow renders with different cutouts depending on what's closer vs further away than the layer from the camera (i.e. the shape of the layer is occluded by objects closer to you than the layer, whether that be a pillar on a porch or a narrowing of a gorge). This last is really the one that really makes it imho; all of us who live in winter countries have seen how complex snow movement in air can be and the simulation of that in the game is really good.

Do you have access to the sources? Or are you running it in a debugger without the benefit of symbols?

As for next gen update - strange, the long dark has some indy style light graphics, so imo there is no need to waste time to upgrade from 1080p to 4k.

There are things that happen when you move from HD to 4k in the engine that are really good, in large part because of what happens wrt what you can see at long distances. Also, the trees are well made for 4k. The (many!) big vistas in the game look incredible at 4k because of this.

Because you can see so far in the regions when you're at the right locations I think it would be really cool if Hinterland could do something similar to LGhassan's work in scatterer for KSP, which models rayleigh scattering and light extinction at the terminator; being able to see proper directional layout for colour banding in the sky for the sunsets and sunrises would be incredible. I also think that given the art style it would be really cool to be able to exploit some of the ray tracing features the new cards are coming out with; in particular, imagine how beautiful it would be to see a properly degraded real time reflection of the aurora in the surfaces of the lakes, or on other ice-covered surfaces such as near waterfalls? Given the overall art style of the game (which is heavily based on iconic Canadian painters such as Emily Carr, Tom Thomson, and the Group of Seven) I can easily see how some of these new technologies could be integrated into the overall look of the game while remaining very true to the inspirational material it's based on.

  9. I'll chime in and echo the general agreement about the game. It's a great game, and a real gem. I'd like to put in a special word for the team that makes the weather; this is hands down the best implementation of winter weather I've ever seen in a game. It's not even close. There are so many little things about how it works that the team really gets right. Superb work.

I'd personally be fine with even that HOWEVER I don't see who you could retool Unix command line tools to work with an API - but I'm up for that challenge! Just no freaking Lua.

Well, if you can convert the structures into text and back again into C# objects you could... something like JSON would probably do it.

I wonder if the vest stops moose attacks from giving broken ribs...

That's pretty much what I thought might be the big benefit from that one; you take a beating but you can run and climb afterwards.
