  1. If I can throw in my 10 cents on a related thought.

I loved this addition, and I really wasn't expecting it. Very cool. But I think most of us were a little surprised that we couldn't keep the knife, either way. From a game play perspective, I understand why. It just seems odd, while playing, and makes you wonder if there's a glitch. So, if we aren't supposed to be able to keep the knife (which I'm assuming is correct), might I suggest that the tool was in fact a screw driver? Hobbs even says that it might be. It would then feel totally normal, and not disappointing to leave it behind.

  2. Yeah, that was an interested reveal. We'd all assumed that the flat ground sprained were just the game being mean by design, so no-one was reporting them as bugs. Now we've learned that it's not intended behaviour - kind of a funny happenstance arising from the game rules being a hidden system that we need to research scientifically. It means we have no idea sometimes when we're actually encountering a bug!

  3. Oh, there are folks reading your adventures! I'm super impressed by how well you took to jumping straight into interloper, and then right into extra advanced modes! But yeah, given that you wanted to learn by, well, dying, I've been just silently rooting along.

But then I realized that I could use the rope at Western Access for a shortcut.

Fun fact, if it's helpful: You can fairly easily walk up the hill to the left of that rope. Doesn't involve any complex cliff crawling.

  5. Just for funsies, and to feel like I hadn't entirely skipped the point of day three by stockpiling fire wood, I decided to leave my snug little cave by the lake, and go for a walk. There was an hour left on the timer, but I took as much coal, wood, kerosene, and accelerant as I could carry, and headed for Pleasant Valley. I was sufficiently well clothed that I could be warm in a house, as long as I was in bed, so it wasn't a huge risk. Always the chance of getting lost in the storm, of course! I eventually decided to wait for the indifferent embrace of death by the pleasant valley farmstead. In this completely dark world, if there is anyone around at all, then they can't possibly miss my signal fire.

(Not a poorly coloured image. 8 flares, a fire, and several flare shells is really that bright!)

Kudos on a fun event to shake things up, Hinterland. I'll be sure to leave more detailed, constructive criticism in the right place, but for now, this is a good day.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong?  I'm just standing in a Lake Cabin (not even a good one).  I have good gear, but not exceptional.  No fire.  Not even the warmth of a lantern.

And while it's a disappointment that just clothing can assuage the fearsome Day-4, I am not at all disappointed in the event itself.  I had a great time: mostly speculating and over-preparing for the worst.  What a great ride.

Did you just start? I found the temp to drop over time. I'm only half an hour in, but when I started for the day, my cave was warm enough. A cottage was just barely warm enough. By the time I got back to my cave, I needed a fire.

  7. My guess is that if one hadn't prepared by gathering a metric tonne of firewood, then this would be a very interesting challenge! However, since most of us seem to have stockpiled like mad, it's now just 2 hours of staring at a fire. I'm also planning on taking bold risks after it ends, to just to see what this new world is like.

  8. Nice! Apparently I hadn't checked in on the stats in a few days. Once I finally get my 500 day stalker achievement (good lord that can take a while to hit), I might have to go all masochistic and give deadman a try...

  9. Following this story is so damn harrowing! I'm tempted to try this mode, despite still being crap at interloper. I suppose I could just turn off health recovery on Stalker... the lack of healing makes it still similar to learning The Long Dark - where you are absolutely going to die, sooner or later.

(just avoid the green ones, they're not ripe).   - From the funniest movie of all time.

It's not terribly extreme, but as a fun little play style challenge:
Fire up the Hopeless Rescue challenge. Ignore the actual rules. Start a fire in the trappers cabin fireplace as soon as the challenge starts. Keep that fire going, 24 hours a day, for the whole week of the challenge.

Far more extreme (and not mine, someone will have to remind me of who came up with this gem)
Fire up The Old Bear challenge part 1. Ignore the objective, and play it like a normal game. Except with a bear that follows you around attacking you.

  11. There's quite a long thread on here somewhere discussing ideas for how this could work. Personally, I think it would add a fantastic dimension to the game. Might give a lot more late game direction. Of course, it's a pretty challenging ask, from a development perspective. But It believe it would be a huge win for the game.

  12. This all sounds like an excellent approach. I am greatly looking forward to the new features in survival mode, and it sounds like you've learned excellent lessons from the Wintermute feedback. I have every faith in the Hinterland team's ability to do great work with what you've learned!

I'm female but I never like to play the female character because, and I think I've mentioned it before...the sounds the female makes during game-play always startle me in tense situations.

Interesting. I pretty much always play as Astrid, because I find Will's grunts to be in too close a frequency range to a wolf growl, so I find it much clearer to tell what's what, if I'm playing with additional noise in the background (like watching a movie or something)
