  1. It would be possible to find a crossbow. They are definitely sold for hunting purposes. It's just guns (rifles and shotguns) and bows tend to be more popular in my limited experience :)

And I'm still against handguns being added to the game for the record! :side-eye:

And in terms of something to do whilst waiting out a blizzard... you could read a book maybe? Sure it's not in game but it's something to do whilst waiting, maybe if they add npc's in future you'll be able to play cards and gamble with them, that is if you let them stay in your safe house.

Readable books are now in the game. You just might not have found any yet :winky:

And welcome to the forums @Shyassasain ^_^

I'm always a fan of more diversity in tools, but in my head I pictured a large thrusting spear. A defensive weapon, as opposed to something to aid in a hunt. (although the AI seems to make deer charge at me all the time, so I suppose it'd work there too)

Ditto. Unless you're a secret Olympian I don't think many modern people would have the speed, strength or accuracy to make throwing spears viable. However, everyone can improvise something to thrust at a wolf to try and ward it off :winky:

Not a fan of the crossbow. Making the trigger mechanism (or anything requiring precise mechanisms) would still be very difficult. Especially with no prior experience, knowledge or practice. Just being able to make a survival bow is already a bit of a stretch.

I like the worms mechanic in all aspects except one, i'm pretty sure you don't treat worms with antibiotics.  There should be a separate anti parasite medication, and possibly herbal treatment.

If I remember right from an earlier discussion with @hauteecolerider that there are a few antibiotics that also have anti-parasitic properties.

  5. There are opinions on this forum about Fallout ^_^

But on topic a simple card game would allow for some simple downtime with resting or waiting for that hungry wolf outside to leave. I don't know if they would be allowed (due to the ratings system) but cards especially opens up the prospect of gambling with NPCs when they're added. Even in the post apocalypse I'm sure somebody feels like they can beat the odds. Cribbage especially would be something nice to see.

This would make me genuinely upset :D

Right now, I pass time by fishing - it's a fun activity I also enjoy in real life, and since fish doesn't have too many calories in the game, it sort of evens out when I spend a day (or a night) in a fishing hut. By the way, can wolves enter those? Because I remember fondly playing a few days ago, getting snowed in in a blizzard and spotting a wolf just outside the hut - seriously, way below detection range. It either didn't notice me (it didn't growl) or somehow couldn't enter... I even had a fire going!

I don't think they can go in the hut. Fire or no I've always just had wolves run around them...

I'm sure you're right, but this isn't a hike in the wilderness, its a survival game. Good survival games keep you on your toes, its a constant struggle to stay alive. otherwise what is the gameplay exactly?

Yep. If you ever watched survivorman most of the time he's either resting, foraging, or playing a harmonica. Now, I've never been in that situation myself but when out and about in the bush there are times when you're just sitting around. But, like @continuity said the Long Dark is a game. If we're going for full realism than there should be player activities to pass time or add more mechanically to the game to trim the downtime. Games are meant to be engaging either through play (stuff to do) or intellectually (stuff to experience - preferably through play).

It also may be that they were degrading during the curing process... I will leave them there for few more game days and let you know if they degrade any more than that.

They will decay during the curing process so, yes, wait a few in game days and check them again. Once cured they shouldn't decay further.

on the run I'm on now, I'm attempting a "haul ass" approach. i skipped most of the loot in ML (save the trappers cabin, just to have some start supplies) and traveled straight to CH as fast as humanly possible. and i skipped most of the loot there, aswell, but looted every house in the townsite (skipping the gas station) just to get a good supply of coffee, condensed milk, peanut butter and warm clothes. i was lucky in this regard, i didnt expect to get so much great loot from these houses. then from there i went up the path by the town, went through the mine to PV and then completely skipped that map, too, taking the path straight to TWM.

lots of coffee later, i'm stuck on the summit.
    literally stuck.
spotted a body in the lower section of the tail of the plane. so naturally, i dropped down to loot the poor sod. i got a premium winter coat, MRE, and emergency stim... but promptly realized that there is no way back up. its either find some way to scale down the side of the mountain and risk falling to my death, or freeze to death up there (which is probably what happened to that poor fella i looted...)

i screwed myself good this time.. xD

You're actually not as stuck as you think you are. There is a way out :)

  10. I understand your argument (i.e. ensure the parasite detriment is meaningful) but I can give four good reasons for including birch bark tea as a treatment:

    1. Parasites should discourage eating wolf/bear - not prevent it if you're out of antibiotics or hunting them anyways for a coat/bedroll
    2. You will run out of antibiotics eventually. It'd be nice to have some alternative so that 2/5 the food options are still viable in the long game
    3. Getting enough birch bark for tea would be far more arduous than keeping a bottle of pills handy. That maintains the detriment of parasites.
    4. With a renewable treatment, parasite risk can be increased slightly without it feeling overly punishing to the players. Then you're more likely to experience this mechanic.
