I notice that when I walk it leaves a good trail. But even in good weather animals leave no trail at all. Would forgive rabbits as they are so small but a thundering great bear who must be at least three times my weight should.

May depend on your graphic setting, but I believe animal tracks are currently dropped, but only when the animal is aware of you.  Perhaps this is to avoid consuming memory dropping tracks you will never see and they used the "awareness" flag because it already existed.  But it is odd not to have bear tracks until the bear sees you...

Wildlife leave tracks but as Selfless mentions we cull them after a while to limit the memory cost. You can imagine it gets hard for performance when you have potentially 20-30 Wolves/Bears/Rabbits in one area leaving footprints.

We're actually doing some work to improve this system, as we feel animal tracks should play a bigger role in the game.

That would be so nice! For once we could stalk wolves instead of the other way around
