The Carter Dam really is a two-day investment...

With the fog rolling in, it's turned out that this is a good day for it. :D

A rather lackluster safe... an arrow and a flare shell.  Nothing really noteworthy inside.  oh well, moving on.

I spent a little while gathering up everything I'd stashed from the previous day's prospecting.  However, my pack was nearly 55kg and that just wouldn't do.  After a few moments of careful consideration... I decided I would leave the toolboxes, flares, Vaughn's Rifle, and the revolver behind.  These are all things I don't have any immediate need for, so I decided those were things I stash in the locker to be picked up some other day (if ever).

With my pack just shy of 50kg, I set out to get back to the Camp Office.

20240307054622_1.thumb.jpg.713912f6d7eb72604a2c6b78dc01b090.jpg20240307054806_1.thumb.jpg.dea7c5fb6c979a890eed054b82bd2ad9.jpg20240307054918_1.thumb.jpg.acb28439066e74a7eebc876b5dde9503.jpg20240307055231_1.thumb.jpg.5d4819fbf8b3ebc987e3028c70806258.jpg
The weather was quickly taking a turn for the worse... but I decided to lean into the wind and press on.  Lugging such a heavy pack make the going slow and dangerous.  If I got caught by wolves, there would be no escape.

I was already committed to the route... and the weather was rapidly turning wrathful.  I was going to have to tank the blizzard and make it back... or freeze to death.

It took nearly the entire day just to trek from the Carter Dam to the Camp Office... but I made it.
I did a quick sort and stow...
I was feeling nearly dead by the time I crawled into bed.

I'd gone to bed early... after a solid night's sleep, I was feeling much better.  The howling of the storm went on for most of the night.  I managed to get up early... however the remnants of the blizzard were still coming down.
20240323105525_1.thumb.jpg.073b91873d107289f30aa5f59d211d19.jpg
It was still far too cold for me to seriously consider venturing out.  I did find a couple of packs of water purification tablets while prospecting through the Carter Dam.  I decided to cook and prepare more drinking water while waiting to see what the weather would do.

20240323131018_1.thumb.jpg.3d77f351ef6223ef914f284bbcf4127e.jpg20240323131810_1.thumb.jpg.e87153d6e31a62c2639896bae41ad525.jpg
By the time I'd finished it was a little past noon.

With the weather having cleared and the day looking gorgeous... I decided on a short and relatively easy route for the day.

The wolves were out in force on the lake, so I took that to mean the "Southern Access" along the river would be clear.

I still opted to head to higher ground to scout ahead carefully, however.

All-in-all, it was a nice and easy day.  I have enough venison stew prepared for two good night's rest, and enough found food to take me as far afield as I'd like.

:coffee::fire::coffee:
I'm not entirely sure if I should stay put and continue experimenting with more cooking... or start venturing out to find more recipes (as well as more gear and supplies). 🤔

After I'd gone to bed... I kind of just laid there in the dark awhile and had a bit of a, "Now what?" sort of moment.
I realized that with nearly no self-imposed restrictions... my stay on Great Bear Island was beginning to feel a bit aimless.  However, that is a "Me" problem.

I know I wanted to experiment more with cooking... but to that end, I didn't have a clear goal in mind...

The more I thought about it... I'm reminded that my ultimate goal is to get geared up for an expedition into the Far Territory, and that all other activities should be centered around supporting that.

With this in mind... I think I'm going to start planning some longer routes very soon.
Collecting recipe cards and continuing to focus on cooking will certainly make life easier when I do get to the Far Territory (being able to make better use of whatever I may find there).  Along with that... I know that I do want some specific equipment... and I need to start seeking it out (rather than just a wandering exploration from region to region).

I think that from here out... my stay on Great Bear Island is going to need to get more focused.
I've never been to the Far Territory, and it is high time that I got ready for that expedition in earnest.

Since I have one more portion of venison stew on hand... I decided I would spend one more day in Mystery Lake to hopefully tie up a couple of loose ends.  Specifically, I do want to get to the old, destroyed lookout tower, as well as the "Lookout" at Clear Cut.  With these couple of things done, I'll have fully explored Mystery Lake.

Then I think the next route will be to the Summit of Timberwolf Mountain.  Seems the most direct way to get my hands on some top tier clothing.  Along the way, I hope to pick up at least one additional recipe card.

As far as supplies... I do have a handful of MREs that are getting pretty sketchy and need to be eaten, and if rationed properly one MRE and get me through two days.  I also now have 50 cattail stalks, so food is pretty well covered for a long trek.

It was a hard push today... even had a few surprises.

20240327202841_1.thumb.jpg.e4b36713b3248a76d364e3e206d34fe2.jpg20240327203037_1.thumb.jpg.5c4978ee89d184741d4e92c967129974.jpg
The day started out with a reminder that I needed to still be very careful... even in a place as familiar as home to me, like Mystery Lake.  Right away there was fog and four wolves spotted on the lake relatively close to the Camp Office.

20240327203211_1.thumb.jpg.10c8eb6004fe781d27833f7b40f63c7d.jpg20240327203324_1.thumb.jpg.8d345677b3eb7150a50127cb0c7d852f.jpg
Also a bear... but that's expected.  Bear have been pretty scarce in Mystery Lake this time around.  So far, I've only confirmed two this season... one denned here on the lake, and the other denned not far from the Trapper's Homestead.  There is still the possibility of a den near the unnamed pond... or even out at Clear Cut.  I'll be finding out for sure today.

20240327203418_1.thumb.jpg.108031774d20be0a5ef4e4b11757b092.jpg
I stopped by the Lone Lake Cabin first, I was worried I might have picked up the note, but not the key.  Then, as I looked through my journal... I realized that I'd made a mistake.  This note was for the cache I'd already picked up, and that I hadn't even found the note/key for the lockbox at the Mystery Lake Overlook.

Fortunate then, that today's route would take me to the last handful of places that I hadn't yet prospected in Mystery Lake.

20240327204547_1.thumb.jpg.000430cc4de7ed5c20f52bf3c9c5f91a.jpg
As I made my way back to the Camp Office... I chanced upon a lone Ptarmigan.  As much as I didn't want to have to do it... I did need more meat for broth, and a warmer bedroll would serve me well in the weeks and months to come.  I quickly just dropped it in the snow near the Camp Office backdoor and continued on the day's route.

20240327204701_1.thumb.jpg.6a7c92949d084d3a06c45b184e685cdb.jpg

Making my way beyond Deadfall, lead me over to the Frozen Creek and the Lonely Meadow.
Also... a moose is on the loose.  Duly noted.

20240327210049_1.thumb.jpg.c57bf99384c519a2de6c9c86191e91c1.jpg
The weather was starting to take a turn for the worse when I got to Clear Cut.  However, I'd already committed to the route.  If need be, I can hole up in either the Lonely Meadow or the Logging Camp (that was the contingency, anyway).

20240327210248_1.thumb.jpg.88326026b659a5c40acc38d9a4b8b3dc.jpg20240327210405_1.thumb.jpg.31a93bf0558f64c17e78cf9678451608.jpg
Every time I visit here... I'm reminded of my some of my early stays in the old tower.  I do miss it, but I think that's just nostalgia... the "newer" Forestry Lookout is really in a better location (at least for sake it's old purpose).  Also worth noting... there are Ptarmigans up here.

Weather was starting to get worse... but as I said, I was already committed to the route.  Now I have to wonder the hillside until I find the "Lookout."  I could already see at least two wolves prowling around in the Clear Cut... there could be farther back past the tree line; also possibly a bear den.  The best path around the wolves was going to take me dangerously close to where I've known bears to den in the past.  With the weather already getting worse... this was a real risk, but I did want to scout to see if there was a den, and I still had to find the "Lookout."

20240327211329_1.thumb.jpg.62f2641965d2725e9ecff3208c8125c2.jpg
Turns out there was no bear denning at Clear Cut this season.

20240327211356_1.thumb.jpg.9fd0b64b973a2bb26a9b77c02da626f6.jpg
The wolves were making up for it though.  I've spotted at least four out here now.  It also looks like they were responsible for the two corpses I've found here in Clear Cut as well.

20240327211636_1.thumb.jpg.45902cfda09663445c8486ad1d439069.jpg
I was never good at finding the "Lookout," there has always been a certain amount of wandering around involved for me to finally locate it.  It always struck me as odd that a place named lookout, would be essentially nestled in between slopes. :D

20240327211721_1.thumb.jpg.b432d385e936045c3c61cce11f717913.jpg20240327211834_1.thumb.jpg.34ccc69125a2c65ae4484442ccdd6bdf.jpg
Eventually, I found it.  There are a group of three wolves just over the slope to my right...  Sometimes I wonder if it was less a name for the place a more a warning for folks to be on the "lookout" as there is a shocking number of wolves in this area sometimes. :D

20240327212328_1.thumb.jpg.19bbd3cb48f6b41fdf277e691fd0790c.jpg
As I made my way back down towards the Logging Camp... it was getting darker, and the snowfall was getting heavier (felt like it was threatening a blizzard).

20240327212617_1.thumb.jpg.c0d6396c0574c7a0755bced900ad62a4.jpg
I did stop by the Logging Camp to warm up for a minute or two... the wind was bitingly cold.

20240327212748_1.thumb.jpg.e7295034d5963647474f90b9d7489eff.jpg
I was determined to make the hard push back to the Camp Office.  At this point if a blizzard did hit, I was going to try to tank it.  I didn't want to eat any of the food I had on hand... not when I have a bowl of Venison Stew waiting for me at the Camp Office.

20240327212924_1.thumb.jpg.1d335e6e7b9df0840c34913ac780497d.jpg
It was getting harder to see the way ahead... and I sort of fumbled around this ridge line.  I absolutely did not end up taking the ideal path around... but that lead to another surprise.

It appears I found a down puddle jumper... and its bush pilot.  Poor soul.  I don't recall if I'd come across this wreckage before... 🤔  In either case, I have it logged in my journal now.

The weather was actually starting to clear as I began to find familiar landmarks.

It was indeed a little bit of a hard push (considering I'd only finally made it back just a little before midnight and managed to sprain everything fumbling around on that ridge line on the way back).

:coffee::fire::coffee:
What a good day. :D

I decided to get serious about a route Timberwolf Mountain.  I decided to keep it a mostly direct path... I'd head out via the Carter Dam and the Winding River to Pleasant Valley.  In Pleasant Valley, I think I'll take a ring route through some of the more promising spots to check of gear and supplies (also to see if I can pick up another recipe card along the way).  I don't want to spend too much time in Pleasant Valley, but it may take a few days prospect, sort, and stow what I find at the handful of places I have in mind.  From there of course... it will be on to Timberwolf Moutain, to make my way to the summit.

However, it took me a lot longer to get ready to go than I had hoped.
I did have to do a sort and stow (trying to pare down as much as possible to save weight - except for food, I was willing to run a little heavy on the food I was willing to haul around).  I also remembered that I also still had a Ptarmigan to harvest... that too several hours longer than I'd anticipated.

Unfortunately, it was nearly sundown by the time I was ready to head out.  It would have perhaps been safer to just rest for the night and head out in the morning... but I wasn't willing to let the day be a total loss.  It has been a while since my last night hike... I decided to press on.

Hard to make out... but two wolves are crisscrossing the tracks near the Train Loading Area.  I had to think quickly...

20240404065106_1.thumb.jpg.6c397dd42d4b8ce9d53cf9b8d1e3bbb8.jpg20240404065146_1.thumb.jpg.e7e33e7f1a75e7e1a07332d0e164f717.jpg20240404065423_1.thumb.jpg.5839c56ff7561a306c679806670bc6c5.jpg
Had to risk coming up on the Carter Dam from the riverside and hope the way was clear.  I approached pensively... but fortune smiled.  There was no wolf skulking around near the Trailers.

While I'm sorry about the fate of the previous owner... finds like this make me glad I take the time to prospect thoroughly.  I'd have absolutely missed this little treasure trove if I had just rushed to get to the far end of the cave.

It's always a bit sad to find a cairn... but I think this one carries my favorite of all the epitaphs I've read.

...There are a startling number of cairns in this cave. I didn't take snapshots of all of them in this cave, but I've read and journaled each one.

Eventually, I came to the end of the cave... I was admittedly rather tired.
I'd hoped to make it further than this, but progress is progress.

Tomorrow... I head for Signal Hill.

It was sometime mid-morning by the time I got up... I had a feeling that Pleasant Valley wasn't likely to be kind to me, so I wasted no time getting back on the move.

And rather alarmingly, the weather continued getting much worse startlingly fast.
However, rather than play it safe and stay inside at Signal Hill... I decided that I would rather risk tanking a blizzard for the sake of making progress.

Now this is really what I needed.  When I started on this route... I realized that I'd forgotten to bring a hacksaw to get started on cargo containers.  Rather than turn back... I decided to trust that I would find another one along the way.  Thankfully, I made the correct choice.

:coffee::fire::coffee:
I would spend the rest of the day repairing some of the new worthwhile clothing I'd found and did a quick sort and stow in order to lighten my pack again.
After the storm passes, I'll check out the Farmhouse and perhaps the Old Red Barn across the river and the next field.

I know it, all too well.
I very much expected it, and it made me chuckle when I saw that the region hadn't let me down 🤭...  which is why I opted to tank the blizzard (knowing that Pleasant Valley would likely keep me pinned down for days otherwise). :D

The good old Pleasant Valley! Blizzards like clockwise, but sometimes the weather is really beautiful, so much sun (and maybe a aurora) 😇

For long time in the shed, I don't know you can up there by the body! 😅

There really are some stunning views in pv..  that and the openness of it is why I make my base there..

It took me two years to realise you could get up to the top in the shed lol... I think loper gets the best loot from him..  on pilgrim I usually get a pair of ragged mittens😁

I'm not sure, but sometimes you got a rabbithat in interloper, for me? I was never so lucky, most likely firewood, mittens, maybe matches or stormlantern.

I've only seen lopers get the rabbit hat but it seems like a 60-70% chance, going by the videos I've watched anyway...

I'd take the lantern for the extra fuel though,I'm too lazy to fish for it😁

I spent the night in the work shed, thankfully the storm passed overnight.
I decided to continue on the ring route from the Pleasant Valley Farmstead, the Pleasant Valley Outbuildings, and finally the Community Hall at Thompson's Crossing before making the last stretch to Timberwolf Mountain.

I had no plans on stopping for the night just yet... but I did take a quick look inside the Draft Dodger's Cabin.  I did find a couple of good quality food items, so I left them behind on the doorstep for future me to appreciate.  Also came across and very ragged pair of trail boots (good for leather... I did need some more leather as well).

By the time I'd gotten to the Crash Site... the weather was threatening a blizzard.  However, I was determined to press on... so much of the day was spent prospecting that it felt worth the risk to make more progress towards Timberwolf Mountain.

Another wonderful stroke of luck.  With two Hacksaws... I have more than enough tools to deal with all the cargo containers I'm likely to find on Timberwolf Mountain.

The unfortunate news is that I'm so heavy with food items, that I will have to shed about 5 kg just to be able to climb the rope in the morning.
But... that's a tomorrow problem.

It was already well past midnight when I'd finally managed to reach the Abandoned Prepper Cache... so I decided to only sleep for maybe 8-10 hours.  Just enough to get up the rope outside and onward to the Mountaineer's Hut on Crystal Lake.  I did still have the dilemma of lightening my pack.  The 12 pack of soda would certainly do the trick... but I do like that they help me conserve water. 🤔

After dropping off the little bit of extra gear that I'd picked up along the way... I only had to pare down another 2-3 kg.  This would be much easier.

Ultimately, I decided to just leave behind all three cans of dog food (I wasn't very keen to eat that anyway 🤢) as well as three cans of Stacie's Grape Soda.  This was enough to at least let me get up the rope. :D

Of course, Pleasant Valley would give me another blizzard to tank... I certainly wasn't going to do the wise thing and wait it out.  I knew it was a risk, but still felt like it was worth it for more progress towards the Summit.20240411184925_1.thumb.jpg.4e285165b8a8fc917b98973369c1f1d4.jpg

Naturally the blizzard was raging in Timberwolf Mountain as well.  Thankfully, this place is like a second home to me... I felt good about navigating my way to Crystal Lake safely (there's a good possibility of there being a rather pithy moose nearby).

Funny enough, just as I'd gotten my pack unloaded... the blizzard blew itself out.
Again, the wiser thing would have been to get better situated, rest/recover, and head out to look for cargo containers tomorrow (I was already in pretty rough shape and my clothing was nearly soaked through clean to my bones).  However, I'd been pressing myself hard for progress no matter the risk... so... I kept pressing.

Let me just take a moment to draw attention to the drama that was unfolding right in front of me.  A wolf caught sent of the buck... the buck was already running away over to the Fishing Hut (where I had wanted to stop off first).  There in the distance is also the Echo Peak Bear, who was also ambling along with intentions to visit Crystal Lake.
Seems we were all (sort of) headed for the same area. 🤔
20240411190337_1.thumb.jpg.7200f4d6785c159ec56e546cb1d3b46b.jpg
The deer took off running again... thankfully leading the wolf off closer to the bear.  Also thankfully, the bear is very slow. :D
This gave me the chance to quickly prospect the Fishing Hut (and leave future me a recycled can there on the stove as well as five sets of fishing tackle).

I didn't really pay attention to what there was... I just kind of quickly grabbed everything I could and rushed back to my primary encampment.  Turned out that Fishing Hut was a nice little treasure trove. :D

I took the shabbiest hacksaw and set out for the bluff just upriver.

I did still have two wolves and a bear to watch out for. :D

I'm already committed to returning to the bluff to prospect the other cargo container and check out the nearby cave... so I will do that after doing a quick sort & stow, as well as perhaps a few clothing repairs.  However, after that... I decided I wanted to make a rush for the Summit.

20240413104756_1.thumb.jpg.2a520a4e2d447db6472ea1ce5433448d.jpg
Hmm... the fog has gotten much denser in the short time I was sorting through and repairing some of my gear.  I will take a one-hour nap to see if the fog clears...

20240413105328_1.thumb.jpg.712ea33af38665ab4a7d819f07657228.jpg
It doesn't look the fog is going to lift anytime soon, but I was determined to head up to the bluff anyway.

20240413105619_1.thumb.jpg.a4d1f15f970f12bffbb4d9bed1bf7cef.jpg
I opted for the safer way around and found something I hadn't spotted in the blizzard.

20240413105831_1.thumb.jpg.8f4bac9c0ee7db347c86add88c92b45c.jpg20240413105939_1.thumb.jpg.8df319ad108f564fc5deef3f2644a1e5.jpg20240413110101_1.thumb.jpg.73105414ed02fad9c3842d4a870fb3b6.jpg
Oh, now that was terrifying!  It happened so fast, that I couldn't get snapshots...
That wolf just ahead was spooked by a bear that was also skulking around.  The wolf ran straight to and bolted past me... I quickly pulled a stone out of my pocket and pelted the wolf with stones sending it sprinting back towards where it came from.  I was then able to slip by safely.  ...felt like I had just taken an emergency stim straight to the heart! :D

I still had to be very cautious... the bear was still rather close nearby as well.

20240413112322_1.thumb.jpg.2c445e9e80fc2867b375d217d7d7b937.jpg
It was terrifying to be able to hear the wolf getting terrorized by the bear yet again... but not being able to actually see either one.  I had a little bit of a hard time finding the other cargo container as well.

20240413115400_1.thumb.jpg.714d974dd1caed84abce53a6a79650d7.jpg20240413115421_1.thumb.jpg.f87cde70414dcdc4fd8cdefcae0b542c.jpg
This wolf has been wandering uncomfortably close... especially considering how seldom I can keep track of it in the dense fog.

Thankfully the fog eventually lifted... there's not much daylight left, but at least now I can see the way ahead to be able to go and check both of the nearby caves.

As it turned out... the fog was hiding just how dangerous the bluff was today.
20240413121730_1.thumb.jpg.a2501e6d5313b3d728850526646804f8.jpg20240413121812_1.thumb.jpg.16ba61168cc54861fb253f8af5395d74.jpg
I went to go check out the closest of the nearby caves... however, it was sadly empty.

20240413121908_1.thumb.jpg.c1a4a6e0850b3a4571b73051acdfba14.jpg
No rope at this climb... duly noted.

20240413122056_1.thumb.jpg.df1fadb9e20aabe970cf0aca5844b08c.jpg
As I skirted close to the ridgeline... I realized why it always seemed like I could hear little footsteps in the fog.  There were at least three wolves up here on the bluff today.  It was far more dangerous up here than I usually give it credit.

20240413122111_1.thumb.jpg.7b77c9519bf048e7d16654ddb4d91c01.jpg
This little cave was empty, but that is more-or-less always the case.

20240413122234_1.thumb.jpg.50da3a67bb908acbf0e474bedde6f7a0.jpg20240413122323_1.thumb.jpg.52f6b7acaa7166d0b6ddede2e813a5d3.jpg20240413122359_1.thumb.jpg.03cb806756951e435ff6814acfc8c170.jpg
The problem now was that all three have been skulking uncomfortably close to the cave.  I actually had to backpedal several times and take cover in that tiny nook of a cave at least three times to avoid detection (and a thorough mauling). 😖

20240413122626_1.thumb.jpg.e549f8eae5b0859e872e03c9c0771a29.jpg
I had to wait a rather long while for a good opportunity... even heard the clacking of the wolf's claws on the rock as its roaming route had it climbing a bit up on the rocky roof above my head (at least that's what it sounded like).

20240413122755_1.thumb.jpg.7ce426dc0a758bef383bfbb30b1a8b5d.jpg
Just as I managed find a good moment to slip away from the wolves' territory... I found that the bear had returned again also.  Though to be honest, it was easier to give one bear a wide berth, than it was to slip past three wolves, all skulking different wandering routes. :D

20240413123041_1.thumb.jpg.a891630f2d7de9e7a8dc7b24556f826f.jpg
As the evening light was fading... I was finally able to make my way back to the frozen river.  I was home free, and looking to take the same safe route back, that I had taken when I made my way up here.

By the time I'd gotten back to the Mountaineer's Hut and gotten everything sorted and stowed, it was getting rather dark.  I know that I had intentions for making progress towards the summit, but I had not counted the fog or the wolves keeping my pinned down for as long as they did.

Oh well.... I make a push for the Summit tomorrow.
