Classic Deadman

”As the more perceptive of you may have realized, this is Hell, and I am the Devil.”
-Rowan Atkinson

You may call me Toby, if you like. Toby the Deadman, has a catchy ring to it.

Toby 1 / Prelude

I will attempt to keep myself detached from the character this time, so I’ll write in the third person, like I used to do with my Knights. Toby will start wherever the fates dictate, and survive as long as possible! Again, I’m expecting to die many times before I get the hang of it. Can I reach my first ever 50 days on this difficulty?

The reason I’m, doing this: I need to drastically change my play style. I play way too many risky games with my condition and get killed every time. So, the way to stop that is to make each and every percentile of condition count.

The difficulty: basic Interloper, nothing added, condition recovery asleep and awake at zero. Birch Bark Tea is off, because it didn’t exist when Deadman was first invented.0222B040-CD16-42E2-A86B-D8E1F3AAD878.thumb.jpeg.b5c7694c7d507f659b13a82cedc325e6.jpeg

Toby 1 / Day 1

I turned length of day multiplier to 2x, set the starting weather to light fog, and accidentally left BBT on. No harm done.

Toby awakes in the ravine crash site in Milton. Did you guys honestly think I would do anything else? I check the flt; -4C. I should do this more often! Toby checks the suitcases next to him; a can of peaches and an accelerant! He has no qualms about taking this forbidden loot.

Toby climbs out of the ravine, gathering most of the rose hips he encounters. 12F427AA-F650-41C5-8172-9DED216BBAED.thumb.jpeg.e4eace0095c15a72f5c5465283ab7001.jpegHe eventually arrives at the crashed plane with 75% left on the warmth bar. There is scrap metal, sticks, newspapers, and a precious stim! 54F15185-93E2-43A6-9404-E33A041C1F3E.thumb.jpeg.b646b19c42d32d59c7dcb11811912f06.jpeg

Wolfgang Wolf is not much of a problem. Toby sprints past him, leaving the rabbits for now. He has no time for them; he must get warm before he starts losing irreplaceable condition.

Toby reaches the radio tower with about 10% warmth left. He does not have time for walking down the road, but the goat path is risky and patrolled by a wolf. Either way, he will lose some condition. Rolling the dice, Toby goes for the goat. The gamble pays off. The wolf gets distracted by a rabbit, and Toby makes it to Grey Mother’s house just as hypothermia risk sets in. 1% condition lost, hopefully it won’t be too bad. Toby harvests cloth and loots the kitchen to warm up. No matches, however, he finds a pair of combat pants and a dress shirt.

Then, Toby sets out for Paradise Meadows. The fog holds up, along with the unusually warm temperatures. 3439D003-64C5-4F5A-BEA1-7A7B1CC2E92E.thumb.jpeg.17c079591c955d6dff47f4aa0ff9bd83.jpegHe gets eyes on Bruno and Rufus; they are joined by a third wolf!!! There has only been a third wolf there once or twice. Fortunately, another gamble pays off; the key to the house is in the tractor.

Toby finds and repairs a light shell, along with a flare, a few candy bars, soup, a crowbar, and maple syrup. A blizzard blows up; perfect weather for travel. Or so Toby thought. He hadn’t even made it to the shed when Rufus jumped him. Even with perfect condition and the crowbar, Toby died almost instantly.A7FF43AD-3DB2-4C8D-9AFC-3FCB84D04CC7.thumb.jpeg.fe0c48914547c66ca40f987a6bcda01a.jpeg

Wow, I had forgotten how much fun third person present tense writing can be!

Toby 2 / Prologue

My settings are probably closer to NOGOA than actual Deadman, but I’m trying to recapture the feel of the original challenge.

Apparently for Deadman, you’re supposed to start in a random region, so that’s what I’ll be doing, in light fog of course, gotta make sure I don’t freeze to death within 30 minutes, after all ;).

With that being said, let’s move on to…

Toby 2

Where do I start? Gah, Desolation Point. I hate this place, almost as much as I hate Ash Canyon and HRV. Got lost in the abandoned mine cave and abandoned the save.

Toby 3 / Day 1

(ALL of my pictures are blurred beyond recognition, so plain text will have to do)

Mystery Lake, much better. I spawn beside the exit to FM, so I grab some nearby ‘hips and make the walk to Trapper’s, picking up sticks on the way. I spot bunnies in the back before I duck inside. 97% condition.

No matches, but I do find a sewing kit, a Mackinaw jacket, a copy of Wilderness Kitchen, and a can of sketchy 37% sardines. I down them (no food poisoning) and sleep an hour to save and warm up.

When I wake up, ol’ Grandma Fog has made pea soup for me; FLT is -4C but I can’t see a bloody thing. Choices, choices. Do I make the long climbs to Milton (with Stalker fatigue and the reported rope climbing bugs, very risky) or try to find matches here?

I’ll stay for now, I decide, and start hiking. I fortunately make it to the Office without incident. I hear salesmen, but I don’t see them… worrying. A quick search of the building yields some herbal tea (useful only for calories, if I live long enough), a sewing kit, work gloves, some water purification tablets, a cooking pot, a mag lens, a moldy granola bar, some salt, cooking oil, and a skillet! Checking upstairs yields nothing else, so I sleep another hour to warm up.

When I wake up and check the weather, it’s nasty. I have more decisions to make. Do I search the lake, or run for the Dam? I need water, and the Dam has toilets, so the Dam it is.

I make it past the first derailment with no signs of salesmen, so I gather acorns and sticks. I’m cold when I reach the tram car and bump into some of Rusty’s friends. I throw rocks to distract them and make a run for the car as one of the salesmen notices me and tries to sell me Electrical Hazards insurance. I make it to the car, and the wolf tries to glitch through the walls for a few tense seconds before running away.

I take my chance and make a beeline for the Dam. I can see it, just across the bridge, when… “Excuse me sir, would you be interested in our very cheap and worthwhile Frostbite Insurance Plan?” Carterdammit, it’s my old pal Rusty in the flesh.

I chuck a rock… and miss. Rusty tries to force me to sign the contract, but the struggle is over in an instant and I miraculously escape with little more than an ink blot on my work gloves.

I make a run for the Dam itself, only to find that I am too late, it’s too dark to see anything. I pass time for two hours and hope for an aurora, but in vain. 55% condition, I’m exhausted and thirsty.

I plod back out to the trailer through the blizzard, eat the granola bar and my sole cattail, and sleep until morning. An aurora flickers on the instant I click sleep, life is a cruel joke.

Toby 3 / Day 2

26% condition. I quickly search the cabin, finding a can of tomato soup that I smash open (60% contents lost) and gulp it down to stave off death for a few minutes. Weather outside is nasty, no chance for mag-lensed fires. I have no food, so unless I find some in the Dam, I am well and truly screwed…

Run Abandoned.

Toby 4 starts in Bleak Inlet. Nope, I’m out.

Toby 5 made it through the first day with 85% condition, and then discovered that he wasn’t a Deadman after all… 😕

This is getting infuriating 😀

Toby 7 / Prelude

“No lists of things to be done. The day providential to itself. The hour. There is no later. This is later. All things of grace and beauty such that one holds them to one’s heart have a common provenance in pain. Their birth in grief and ashes.”

- Cormac McCarthy, The Road

Here is the code for my settings: 8sHN-vz8P-KX+z-AaLW-5kIC

I may or may not have turned off BBT, I don’t remember, but there’s no going back now.

Toby 7 / Day 1

Mountain Town spawn, Crom be praised!

I loot the entire crash site, scoring accelerant and a copy of Advanced Guns, Guns, Guns! 0C1550A2-6634-4CD6-8E7F-1782CCD4CC4A.thumb.jpeg.bbe2651ddbab77c7781b9cf08cfd4f19.jpeg

Extra “Fire” power

I take my time and take all the ‘hips I can find on the way up to the plane.3F5A940C-9F80-42F3-8431-D0773742662A.thumb.jpeg.3a0ab004e4a1a593d691f84b73cb9bba.jpeg99EB29FE-B4CA-4379-834C-10A94DDAFA5F.thumb.jpeg.e11c55209a8d984f286f380b63067cbf.jpeg The stim is waiting for me, so I take it and continue.

Wolfgang Wolf notices me, so I’m forced to sprint past him and take rushed shots and rabbits… I hit only one. Demoralized, I duck into the cave by the tower to grab coal and warm up for two hours before continuing on my way.27CB479C-1AFC-4A02-81AA-95F4ECD25175.thumb.jpeg.bfb6948d194f09230df4cc0b1516b083.jpeg

I find some food, combat pants, pots, and a skillet, before going upstairs to the important part. The cloth yields… a cured rabbit pelt! Exotic, but not all that useful at the moment.

I head back out to gather cattails, acorns, and burdock, coming back minus some condition. I repair the combat pants, prepare my ‘hips and ‘shrooms, drink toilet water, and hit the sack.

I check my inventory, I have 6/6/6 of cedar firewood, coal, and books, a bad omen?

I make a quick run across to the bank and score a soda, 7 effective cups of coffee(!), some cash, and another book.B28C958A-AEEB-418D-A993-9416F56447D7.thumb.jpeg.e5709485572603c58530d5e6fb10fff2.jpegNectar of the gods

I head out again to the old schoolhouse to grab the prybar before continuing on to Paradise Meadows. 6CA1624F-EFE5-4DBD-891B-6E568EFBDC16.thumb.jpeg.854eceade8cbe4fea3a8489a13877c47.jpegI’m home. Well, a home, anyway

I get eyes on Bruno and Rufus just before they get eyes on me, and I duck into the workshed, scoring some ‘taters and carrots. I lead Bruno on a merry chase to the back of the house to grab the key before ducking inside just as I start freezing.

I check everywhere, finding a flare, a mag lens, and some food, but no matches… I eat a 60% chocolate bar and promptly contract food poisoning.07081F16-1FA5-4D25-B656-93416165DB95.thumb.jpeg.79315bda0cffa65cd38aae41b029ce3a.jpegCrom does not suffer fools

I’m forced to use the flare to prepare my ‘shrooms while I boil up some water before hitting the sack.

At least my record’s broken :).

Toby 7 / Day 4 / 95% condition

Blizzard until afternoon, then wind and snow. Not optimal, but I must satisfy my stomach. I duck out and head to the nearby river rabbit grove for rabbits and cattails… and again, my aim is terrible, and I only bag one bunny.

Bruno and Rufus get between me and the house, and a third wolf comes from the right. Sighing, I drop the rabbit - BAM - and make a run for the house on the hill. Miraculously, I make it with all my limbs still attached.

Inside, I find a soda and a can of dog food. I idly check my inventory and promptly facepalm myself. I’ve left ALL of my cooking vessels back at Paradise Meadows, I don’t even have a can on me. Fortunately I have 2L of toilet water. Weather and wolves won’t let me leave, so I repair my windbreaker and sleep.

Toby 7 / Day 5 / 95% condition

Weather is clear, but bitterly cold and windy. A wolf spawns in my face, so I duck back into the shack and pass time for an hour.

When I check again, it’s Grandma Fog with an unreal -2C FLT! I make my way down to the broken houses by the river and grab a couple ‘shrooms and a dozen cattails, and nearly jump out of my skin when a wolf kills a bunny not ten meters from me. That was close.

I hop from house to house without much event (oh, I found work boots and a wool toque!) until I reach the Bank Manager’s House. By his bed is a copy of Wilderness Kitchen; in his oven, cooked rabbit meat; in his fridge, a COHO SALMON!!! I pinch myself before taking toilet water and napping for another hour.

When I wake up, the weather is… clear, FLT -4 in the shelter, windchill -11C. I mag lens a fire and cook the salmon, devouring it in true Deadman fashion. F71E838F-9A68-4AE2-97E0-586BC88D3441.thumb.jpeg.8f0627147418e4def9ae76787f3c5c69.jpegRule #1: It ain’t smelly if its in your belly!

Then I pull torches from the fire and take advantage of the weather to push on to the Orca station.0CE96951-BA81-4107-B819-0EC062419339.thumb.jpeg.bf7a0bd047457075c162386c08440067.jpeg

The food inside is eh, but above average by ‘Loper standards. The weather is STILL holding firm. No, actually, it has improved. With a torch, it’s a mind boggling FLT of +1C!!!

My fatigue is still at about 70% (probably because of length of day 2x), so I decide to push on through the Milton Park.5613CBA2-C400-4B41-B344-CB5873109E82.thumb.jpeg.b13bf839e051799d2708cb06d0b23312.jpeg I gather a dozen acorns and sleep four hours in the Park Office. With a fire in the stove, of course, I’m not THAT stupid.

The impossible FLT is still holding. I also get well fed, which bumps my condition to 95% (from 90%, accounting error in my last post).10B48DCB-1B37-42B6-BD0A-154076E8BA46.thumb.jpeg.9b60b5f25f760094102d252c7eb8c4ed.jpegWho asked you?

A saying pops into my head, it goes like: “God loves fools, that’s why He made so many of them.” I drink a cup of coffee and zip down that rope, hardly even breaking a sweat. I let out a sigh. If the climbing ropes were bugged, they’re fixed now.

I gather some ‘shrooms and ‘hips, and also get back the ol’ touch and stone two bunnies. E79F2B98-1F8B-456F-92B9-63F1D44DDF95.thumb.jpeg.fd454ece7ca161d674f52eeac85bc453.jpeg

I know that climbing up is a lot more tiring than climbing down, so I drink another cup of (cold) coffee, cross myself, and start climbing. Again, it was much easier than I expected…4B10242B-B1BA-415C-8C72-E2D5D38DE093.thumb.jpeg.2ba593c878725a60ca7ac3665101c25d.jpegWooohoooo!!!

Toby 7 / Day 6 / 95% condition

This is actually pretty easy! But then again, so is just about anything after a 40-day Kegstand :D.

Blizzard in the morning, so I can’t travel. I smash open peaches and tomato soup (more for the water than the calories) and read about Catalyzing Chemical Reactions in Organic Substances for two hours. When I’m done, Grandma Fog is back, so I make my way to the Office, saying hello to Rusty, of course.9177D2B5-617C-43E8-96CB-2E697BEF7FB8.thumb.jpeg.32765da576991266db303076eaf78fcf.jpeg
No, I am NOT interested. Now freeze off.

Inside, I find a mag lens, a skillet, and some cans (whew). Curiously, I also find an Aviator’s Cap, didn’t know that could spawn on ‘Loper 🤔. Repaired, it’ll do nicely as a substitute for the coveted 2nd toque.

I head upstairs, finding another book about Reheating Frozen Foodstuffs, and light up the fire. I boil water, cook acorns, ‘shrooms, and ‘hips, get Cooking 2, boil more water, and cook up 6 loaves of Bannock (each batch is two loaves, so at 400 calories for the cost of some flour, water, oil, salt, and 30 minutes of cooking time, they’re about as efficient as deer meat!)79162F17-5C62-4ED9-B9FB-2456844E12E2.thumb.jpeg.dd04eb3ce805cb56bcf25414d2aeb362.jpeg

An aurora lights up the lights, so I grab the buffer memory before I hit the sack. Something about test subjects, peculiar.797F430D-A9A5-4558-89A8-44D4A6AE5C42.thumb.jpeg.17814aab5cca73492418544377a7a403.jpeg34EF78C6-C0B7-4120-926C-EEE4FD879766.thumb.jpeg.86d6370fd728c750c748394e47fd09d7.jpeg

Science

Let’s test out just how efficient Bannock is.

Bannock weighs 0.10 kg for two loaves of 200 cal. each. That’s a measly 0.05 kg per loaf! Meanwhile, each cattail weighs 0.15 kg (I think?) for 150 cal. each.

Comparing the efficiency rates:

Bannock: 200/0.05 = 4000 cal/kg(!)

Cattails: 150 / 0.15 = 1000 cal/kg

Cattails move over, bannock is the new most efficient food in the game!

Toby 7 / Day 7 / 95% condition

I wake up shortly before noon. Weather is light snow, FLT -9C. FCDC9AD5-3B77-40C9-B28F-0CF9DDE269E9.thumb.jpeg.c922362695a56ef67602dbf9aaf4dd06.jpegDeadmen must move or die, so I go out to the lake and make a thorough sweep. I’m forced to strike a match to fend off Rusty’s gang (which has been called The Jacket by previous Deadmen).E7D487CC-DA16-4C6C-BA21-66BC5CB1A80A.thumb.jpeg.e357c92f427efa89cbd0e700931cd471.jpeg

The first fishing hut has a flare, but the others are empty. I make a long loop counterclockwise around the lake, vacuuming up 40 or so cattails (why are there so many?!) and narrowly avoiding the glitchy wolves. They just won’t stop barking…

The wind blow out my torches at some point, but the gust is a short one, and gives way to clear skies and more unbelievably kind temps. Is this even Interloper, are my settings screwed up?

I continue my loop around to the lone lake cabin. 1FAAA195-CAC7-4DD9-A7CC-6003217651EB.thumb.jpeg.c0291d9cbe45b7533099a73a00ec2f46.jpegHello comrade! Again, papers please.

Wouldn’t you know it, the bear is right there. Again. He’s two for two so far. I sneak past him until the wind once again rises to blow out my torch. 3EAC2307-DD9F-4805-8FC6-800BD089F0EB.thumb.jpeg.e77ad1c982bc3ccbc2917c7fc2e7f0e2.jpegThen I run like hell, not looking back as I hear him begin to charge.

An hour’s sleep in the warm bed, and he’s gone. I go out to check the fishing hut and mag lens a fire to light my torches with, and then the bear is there again. C18989B3-C408-4399-B47F-0EAA33F99534.thumb.jpeg.77376f75bf4f54592a3a6b39b49944bc.jpegRrrgh. I wait for him to move away a ways before I exit the hut and continue my loop back to the Office without further event.E5C5F8D1-510B-443E-9B8D-B332F4D20EBF.thumb.jpeg.89098d0cbd4ccb1a3bd87f19ba0c57ac.jpeg

It’s still only 3 in the afternoon, and I have 50% fatigue. I make a cup of coffee, stash away 40 cattails and 23 acorns, and head out for the Dam. Of course the wind blows in my face the entire time, but again, I’m only losing one arrow of heat. Maybe my clothes are just really good?

There are absolutely no wolves between the Office and the Dam. My paranoia increases by the minute, but they just don’t show up. C370261A-7AFF-4586-BD4C-71411DE225A8.thumb.jpeg.9d1b4f821ac2cadf264cf61417053e1d.jpegMaybe they’re all out on the lake?

I check the trailers for soup and a cotton toque before going into the Dam in search of the Hammer while praying that an aurora won’t show. Well, I don’t find a hammer, but there was a bunch of food and a hacksaw, which might be even more valuable.

I use my new toy to harvest a frozen deer carcass and cut down a maple sapling while an aurora lights up the sky. 0B98898B-D577-4517-A920-12345A90B1B1.thumb.jpeg.366099846d434653e2b4dee183eaca34.jpegI’m overly paranoid, but again, no wolves. Ruminations

I honestly didn’t expect Deadman to be this easy! I have oodles of food, good clothes, guts curing behind me, and apparently Lady Luck is on my side as well.

I want to check the lookout towers for a rope before I get the flare gun from the ravine (if it still spawns, that is). Then it’s CH—>PV—>TWM… and all three of those regions are more or less alien planets to me as far as navigation goes. Should be fun 😁.

Toby 7 / Day 8 / 95% condition

Wind today. I decide that I’ll hit the towers, so I make my way over to the derailment. -15C windchill gets under my skin, so I harvest the frozen deer, light a fire, and eat everything on the spot while cooking two cups of coffee. That hacksaw is wonderful.

I continue all the way up to the intact tower without any wolves, very peculiar. 654C30F6-C078-4B04-8C17-9CB588F276A5.thumb.jpeg.3db3db08f9389e0ca8f282027015895e.jpegNo sprains either, which is fortunate. I still have lotsa energy, so I drink a cup of coffee and start the goat to the destroyed tower. I fumble a hop and sprain my ankle, losing 2 or 3% condition. 747FF2FF-6A38-4142-9B47-23B8E009C85C.thumb.jpeg.9f978878962b517432a5bdb3d0485ee7.jpegI bandage up and continue, coming across some acorns. As I harvest them, I hear a sound that might as well be a tolling bell. BARK BARK BARK!!!!

BLOODY HELL WHERE DID HE COME FROM?! An expletive explodes from my lips as I frantically backpedal and try to light my flare. By divine intervention, I manage to light the flare just before the wolf reaches me, and scare it off.95223EA4-8657-45A0-9AAA-CE32A01D1896.thumb.jpeg.3cb1574695cdd55cd9a016c3ded6c8da.jpeg

My heart pounds like a drum and I am extremely paranoid, but I reach the destroyed tower without further mishap. I find a rope and a memento note and key that says: “We found T’s stash in that cave on the upper ridge. So many rounds left! Holding out on us.” To me, that sounds like a possible flare gun!

I don’t have enough cloth for a snow shelter (which will probably end the run if I have to sleep in it), so, with a wolf following close behind, I make my way back down to the Trailer camp, finding a Marine Flare and a tin of sardines in a trailer I could’ve sworn I already checked. 34AA7DCD-04FE-4DE9-8970-05A0D7F77692.thumb.jpeg.d8c018a83b5598f6c2b0ebb39442cfe6.jpegSusiboy: “Impossible is nothing!”

Then I boil some more water in the burnt out cabin and decide to call it a day.0B95DDD3-9818-4C3D-A042-E85A959856BE.thumb.jpeg.63c462878f78761f011a25b7bc8e1cdd.jpeg

Toby 7 / Ruminations 2

Currently snug as a bug in a rug in the logging camp… time to try and find that cache. “So many rounds left” sounds VERY encouraging, and I have enough food to stay in ML a while longer, so I’ll hunt it down.

Of course, with my luck, it’s probably going to be a can of dog food or something else like that…

93% condition is too high to stim up, and no, I haven’t touched BBT so far :).

Toby 7 / Day 8 / 92% condition

Weather is 3 arrows down for the first time this run, but I time it perfectly and make my way back to the Camp Office without taking any cold damage. Two hours of sleep, and I’m off! Weather is -12C fog, brrr, but I want to head up to the cache. Eventually, and without sprains, I get to the Overlook. B8E525AE-4878-408C-9984-565B9CD0AFEE.thumb.jpeg.856e2bba5fd9f89a1b05a7a35dfbf13f.jpegThere are some bunnies, but I’m not interested in them. I want the “so many rounds”! I find the lockbox in the cave and eagerly open it…

At least there’s a soda for me to take. Grumpily, I make my way down to the Office for another hour’s warmup sleep.

Well, there’s nothing left for me to do in ML, so onwards. I take everything I’ll need (hammer to drop off at the Dam) and head out for the Dam. A blizzard arrives not long after I leave, and I take shelter in the tram car, lighting a fire to warm up and make water. Unfortunately, the wind shifts and my tea doesn’t get to finish. As I’m turning around to leave, however, I find something that I missed the first two times… a bedroll!67630D26-E94B-4D18-A384-E947D840D784.thumb.jpeg.15664f3bc4956da13ae11eb5b7159b5d.jpeg I now have the full early Interloper toolkit.

I make it to the Dam without further event (or condition loss) and purify some non-potable water with my purifying pills before going to bed. 5A331538-A78C-491F-B2B0-C58D3EC2FCAE.thumb.jpeg.b087ee38dcb2af7db18e726ea5da1d01.jpegI get some aurora snaps, so that’s nice…B29D7957-3D57-4DE4-B61A-D05C5AB45E73.thumb.jpeg.c072889fe5bdb55ddc43261a03253aa5.jpeg

Toby 7 / Day 9 / Scouting

What exactly is scouting, you ask? It’s a form of save-scumming, actually, but Code is Law, as @BareSkin used to say. Anyway, essentially, I push as far as I can without causing the game to save. If I run into a wolf or other unpleasant conditions, or find disappointing loot, then I quit and load back to the start of the expedition.

Anyway, this scouting expedition deployed the rope, climbed down with the help of coffee, and found a hammer where the flare gun used to be, as well as the entrance to BI. Quit and reload, next session I’ll know not to waste my time going down there.

Toby 8 / Day 9 / 72% condition

That last post said day 8, but whatever, my timing is out of whack.

I wake up to clear but windy skies and mag lens a fire, cooking coffee and hot beans. By the time I’m done, the weather has let up a bit, it’s -11C with minimal winds. Good enough.

I zip through the ravine like a demented squirrel, coming across a floating deer. 0854EFF2-190D-4BD1-8AC2-946C9F5294C9.thumb.jpeg.0e6520ce748b67af7316602e4fa8da3d.jpegSaid deer almost kills me by causing my mouse to jerk as I cross the log and continue on to the bridge of death.390E81E8-F7CF-4785-9296-F80BB827A043.thumb.jpeg.1a9fc2bed761997d6a1ceb93db6d6a0c.jpeg

Fortunately, I make it across, and we’re in Coastal Highway!B4D099AE-8D5A-463F-A780-8F8A5BEE0688.thumb.jpeg.4a802064abc4947313baf57ecd8820fe.jpeg

I haven’t been here in two years, let’s hope I don’t get lost :D. Fortunately the path is fairly straightforward, and I make it the Coastal Townsite as fog descends… I’m actually warming up with a torch in hand.74B2B2C5-5E7D-4705-9FDF-4546BF21C935.thumb.jpeg.2b8bb3ab3fc992c37c4db4238fbbfa7c.jpeg

I find a kilo of deer meat in the oven that I greedily devour before stepping outside.3FD24FDA-03FB-466B-9B5E-F288DB150F7A.thumb.jpeg.5415e25789678ef11e51c0a832c682af.jpeg

I promptly get noticed by a wolf. I can’t see it, where is it?! I panic, and it’s on me, striking from behind like the cowardly dog it is. I smack it with the prybar and it runs off. I got lucky, no blood loss, it just took me down to 76% condition. Ouch.

I duck inside the Quonset Garage and spend the rest of the day boiling water, reading, repairing, and cooking.1A8DD894-1A01-4F23-9A3E-8D05C639B2F7.thumb.jpeg.82bbaf79d08318cbf1afd447c3dbb5f2.jpeg

Toby 7 / Day 10 / 72% condition

Correction, the wolf took me to 72% condition, not 76%.

A blizzard in the morning, go figure. Rrrrgh. I read a book about putting hooks in fish mouths and check again. -6C flt. I decide to head to the mine and push on to PV.

Lets just say that the plan didn’t survive first contact with the enemy 😀. Winds rise as soon as I get going, and a wolf gets on my trail and sticks with it. I have to strike three matches to shake him off. Rrrrgh. Fortunately I found some more yesterday…

I eventually get to the mine and am stumped to come to an elevator. 0614F462-7685-49A0-A766-AB92C1F8C86A.thumb.jpeg.bdf4e1eb476f7aef7e6e80bd4c476986.jpeg9986A044-8C40-452D-976E-E9245448E0E6.thumb.jpeg.e183f8d283cde24a14e2ca5a0476c6e3.jpegRrrrgh. Wrong mine, but no biggie. By now a blizzard has started, so I take a nap.

Weather is deceptively nice, it gets windy AGAIN (Rrrrgh) as I plod to the trailer near the exit to the Ravine with a wolf on my tail. I sigh and duck inside, sleeping an hour to save this fiasco, which I facepalm myself for now, after @FaT McMarlin said that the mine is on the other side of the map. Rrrrgh.

The weather clears up when I head back out, but I’m skeptical. I don’t quite recall all the details, but I make my way down to the fishermen’s cabins, find canned food poisoning, and continue on through the ice fishing huts for a spot of beachcombing. I find a Coho Salmon, Christmas is here! I’m forced to light a marine flare to keep the wolves off my back as I make my way up to Jackrabbit Island.

I cook the salmon and sleep for two hours before continuing on my ramble and do some more beachcombing. I find ANOTHER Coho Salmon, Quality Tools, and the best find, a 94% wool toque! 5502A944-502A-4F5B-9905-E5EC0CC4659B.thumb.jpeg.c2d630a349a546ed535a23b2bd725a98.jpegPronounced “Tuke”

After a bit more walking, I reach Misanthrope’s Homestead. I feel like I belong here, not because I’ve spent any real time here, but because I share the sentiment 😁. Of course unwelcome visitors ruin my solitude, a bear begins snuffling and growling as soon as I reach the door.BED49420-06BD-47BF-8BE7-0C51C3D87DD1.thumb.jpeg.9d579458d14622c7c6e3a2d28c56eb7f.jpegBoth of us are Rrrrghing pretty loudly

I duck inside, harvest my leather gloves, and make the improvised ones. I get fishing level 2 from a book before calling it a day.8CD00E1F-ECBA-4A34-8647-070A9466CB29.thumb.jpeg.0e45949c27d70781d0e7a890e98fc700.jpegOh, Toilet Water, the Deadman’s best friend

You're honestly closer than you realize when your in the aura mine. Just need to head up the hill a little more, it's basically right in the middle. The final picture you should be able to exit the house and see the abandoned lookout tower. After that it's basic land navigation. There's multiple paths to the transition. Worse comes to worse: go to PV and enter the mine there, follow it out into CH and spray paint or map the location. I wish I had better ways to describe where to go.

Toby 7 / Day 11

I decide to head back to the garage with my loot, and promptly get lost on the other side of the map :D.

An hour or so later, I make it back through heavy winds that blow in my face the entire time and do a little inventory management that slims me down to *only* 37 kg. 1A646209-F3E3-47EB-AE29-8DA4A935B3DA.thumb.jpeg.db0badcaee2570f778102cb59f78a08f.jpegDon’t judge, I need to carry all my food, firewood and tools with me.

An hour’s nap and I’m off for the high road. I’ll be in Scotland ‘afore ye! Unfortunately, the bonnie wolves and that blasted wind have different ideas, and I need to burn a marine flare before finally reaching… a plane crash?! 554F559B-CA2F-4D6F-8029-0F0C28DA5D95.thumb.jpeg.d02ce0785bb12ff04b7e6df6918f19b8.jpegI turn around, wave off a wolf, and realize that I have wandered off the very obvious road. Doh.

I get back on track and pop another flare to shake off that very persistent wolf.B422CB70-61D3-4057-8112-DB8F2FF31327.thumb.jpeg.2341db248cc8b2a0194295e1e5c0a72b.jpeg S’matter, y’don’t like m’face?

After more walking, I finally reach the tower. DD70E087-0C9D-4111-B60E-2A1D4A0948D3.thumb.jpeg.0e8809643b3256a586398820f59b8b9a.jpegI sleep for an hour to save and find clear skies. I mag lens a fire, make a coffee, and slooooowlllly walk to the mine. Yes, I am encumbered again. When I finally reach the mine some time later, I am overcome with nostalgia. 417033A6-A165-474D-B530-E5B3F0EE3BAE.thumb.jpeg.73cc8cad58886de137057f8d9689734a.jpegI haven’t been here in forever.65FE29EE-D396-46C2-BCF0-DE07944B8040.thumb.jpeg.b49ff4ec1b0843978105443288d0a0b8.jpeg

When I finally reach the other side, it is night, and it truly hurts my soul to have to drop 35 of my 45 coals before calling it a day.DD4A5526-92C0-4E15-A35F-0A7C5FA944D4.thumb.jpeg.ef3b0729c2e676c4ade7b0f34a421dfe.jpeg
