Archivist in Survival Mode?

Playing sandbox mode, I noticed that clicking in my journal, in the "collections" section, I can collect 'buffer memories' as in the "Archivist" challenge... so I was wondering if they are related. I mean, collecting all buffer memories in survival will complete the challenge (sounds weird) or what happens with them. I believe these buffer memories weren't in the game before the Redux Update (maybe I'm wrong but don't remember them). I know they are there at least some time ago, in fact I collected some, but didn't find more info so maybe someone with more experience in this game can tell. I'm really curious about this feature.

Archivist has some of them in special places that don't exist in survival mode

Challenges can be seen as their own game.  The are completely independent from any other challenges/survival games you have going.
