How to use a mountaineering rope?

I've found a mountaineering rope in the Maintenance Shed. When I click on it in my inventory the only option presented is to drop it. How do I use it?

There are phallic monoliths near some cliffs, they can be interacted with to tie the rope and climb down and up. Watch your carried weight, but always carry a bedroll and/or stim.

There's one among the rocks just across the river.

Edit: that climb is one of the bothersome ones, on the way up the white dot will appear when there's a ledge to take a break.
