I shot him with a bow while outside the cave.  He ran off and I lost him.  It was getting cold & dark so I figured I would sleep in the back of his cave (I crouched first (if that made a difference...)).  When I woke up, he was in the cave sleeping.  One more arrow finished him off where he lie.

Cool, i've never actually seen a bear sleeping. Mainly because i don't go near their cave

As a public service warning, if its a shallow cave, they can look just like the rocks that ring the outside of some caves.

I laugh imagining this whole scene unfolding.  You woke up to a nightmare, bear died in his sleep . . irony!
