Blood Spray False Positive using the Bow

Been getting pretty good with the bow lately, especially with hits from long range.  Lately been seeing this crazy blood spray that you can see from a distance that suggests I have hit the deer, but when I get up to area, i found a arrow in the snow with no blood spatter and no blood trail to follow.  Is this fairly common when deer hunting from a distance or does the Bow's condition impact the arrows deadliness.  Lots of time I am deliberately using the lowest condition bow in order to offset degredation  of my newest bow.
