  1. There are definitely some sneaky hiding spots! I once found a rifle tucked way back under the bed in the master bedroom in the Pleasant Valley farmhouse. I checked under the bed during my first sweep, but something caught my eye on a later trip many, many game days after that.

My suggestion is to be super thorough on your first run, and to do secondary sweeps periodically even when you think you've found everything. My experience is that if you absolutely can't access an area, like it's too high up to reach, or a drawer doesn't open, there won't be anything spawning there. But there are occasionally areas that require creative thinking - there's a hidden backpack in Hibernia Processing in DP comes to mind.

That said, your cursor *can* often reach farther than you think. I once found a pair of wool long johns trapped behind a cage of old bed frames at the Forest Talkers' cabin in Broken Railroad. It was so far back that it was almost impossible to reach, but I finally figured out the perfect spot where I could reach it while crouched. Some things just take some extra maneuvering.

Oh, also check the pickup truck beds. I've found things like tool boxes, cloth,  etc hidden under the snow. If the reticle dot appears, that's a sign something is there. Try "feeling around" with it, and you might find one or more items in there.

I wonder if this is a semi-glitch due to the recent update - the truck beds used to be devoid of snow, and I would occasionally find items inside them. Since they were filled with snow in the update, I assumed that the items just stopped spawning in the beds, since I could only see the snow. Good to know they're still spawning. Thanks for the heads up!

  3. Very early on in my experience of TLD, I started my first Voyageur game out in Milton and decided to venture into HRV, thinking "how difficult could this region be, anyway?"

I ended up nearly frozen and starving to death in the Lake Cave on Monolith Lake. I had run out of bullets, but managed to find a bow and arrow, and discovered that Monolith Lake was the site of a moose spawn. I decided to roll the dice and shoot my one arrow at the moose, and killed it with a headshot on my first try.

I'm pretty sure I still have that game saved. I refuse to end it, since it was one of my earliest games and I'm convinced I'll somehow be able to make it out of HRV alive with enough experience under my belt. I prefer playing on Pilgrim, so I'm not much better at avoiding wolves, but I do know the map much better now.

  4. P.S. @LowSpeedHighDrag this user also made a series of topographical maps using aerial "photography" of the regions:

They're not as helpful without the Whiteberry-style markings, but here are topographical maps of Mystery Lake and Broken Railroad which include the WB markings:

  5. I had multiple issues around killing the bear:

    1. Getting close enough to the spear to grab it - I found that when I started from the upper entryway platform in the final cave, I could simply walk across the cave wall to the right, and "mountain goat" all the way around to the room with the spear in it. All I had to do was start high enough on the wall to be able to pass the crack in the rocks in between the two rooms.

When I got to those rocks, I would use a stim, jump down, run and grab the spear, then run to the nearest secure hiding spot to the right of the spear. Then I would wait for the bear to get in a position that was far enough away that I had time to set up the spear before getting mauled.

    2. Once I speared the bear, my "fight meter" wouldn't fill properly, even after dozens of tries. I eventually realized that my graphics settings were so high that my laptop wasn't registering the clicks from my controller in time to fill the meter. Turning down the graphics was the only thing that worked, and I was able to kill the bear once I speared it 3 times in a row.

  6. I once took it and left it in the ranger's station in Milton near the climbing area, and when I broke down the stool underneath it, it remained floating in the air.

Was it a bug, or was it a miracle? We may never know.

If you shoot from indoors, like in the porch on PV, you won't get a blood trail. For some reason you have to be in an outdoor location. I hit a bear with the flare gun through a porch window. He ran off about 50 feet then went back to strolling. He died about 4 hours later. Remember, sometimes the bear will reset if you sleep or leave the map. So just pass time if you are in a car, but don't sleep if you can avoid it. A broken arrow should wound him as much as a normal one. It can take up to 6 hours for a bear to bleed out, depending on your skill level and where you hit him.

I don't know for sure, but this seems intentional on the part of the game devs. A porch would be like the ultimate hunting blind otherwise.

Yeah, finally found it. It's LT. I can't believe I've been playing this for over a year and never knew that. I don't know if I should delete this thread or not?

Lol this happened to me too. Not sure why it took so long for me to figure out. I'd say keep the thread, since there might be more of us out there who are just too ashamed to admit it 😂

If RNG cooperates, two expedition parkas, two cowichan sweaters, gauntlets, wool toque, balaclava, moosehide satchel, wool ear wrap, two snow pants, two wool longjohns, two climbing socks, insulated boots.  I prioritize warmth first, windproof second.  Defense and waterproofing aren't real big concerns for me, since I can ditch wolves no problem, and double-tapping C to keep an eye on my clothing is easy.

I typically don't bother crafting clothing, as the weight isn't worth it.  But if I'm looking for a cool paper doll, I like the cloth toque, wolfskin coat, deerskin pants, driving gloves, and mukluks.

Seconding this, except I will typically craft the rabbitskin hat, deerskin boots, and rabbitskin mittens. It's easy enough to get a stash of rabbit/deer skins and guts, and they're basically infinite resources. The boots are on par with mukluks (which are very rare), and I can save my leather pieces for repairing the satchel.

Even prioritizing warmth like this, my sprint meter is still at 75%. Not too bad since I'm protected from most weather, and it's still fun for me to seek out the rare clothing items.

You will only find them in un-searched containers or loose.  I have to admit, I didn't find as many (especially books) as I would have thought in my older save (Voyageur). It's going to be really close to get lvl 5 revolver.

I had reached lvl 5 on all the other achievements in my longest game, so I needed a foolproof way to get lvl 5 on the revolver or risk wasting all of that work. So I read 2 (maybe 3?) revolver books, and then killed pretty much every animal in Mystery Lake.

This is sort of cheating, but I figured if I ran out of bullets, I'd be screwed. Like you said, since it was an older save, I feel like I ended up with less revolver bullets than I would have. So I restarted the game if I happened to miss a shot, and I ended up reaching lvl 5 pretty quickly.

Well the bag says "These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration and Keep away from children...  so i think I'll let you try it first and if you live maybe I'll give it a try lol

Other than tasting like water mixed with the color brown, no ill effects to report! I'll let you know if I die later on though 😂

As much as I love lighting in TLD, this frame informed me of something I did not realize was missing from TLD. Appropriate back lighting, on some distant objects. There is no aura of light coming around the mountains, no light beams, granted the lighting in this game is supposed to be muted and subtle. This is missing. There is no way, physically, that no light would spill over or wash through, the sides of these mountains. Light should still be surging up through the valleys here. Something is not quite right, imho.

crepuscular rays~had to look it up.

At this time of day, since the sun is so far beneath the horizon, I don't think there would be a lot of illumination. I looked up some IRL sunsets and they seem to be similar to this shot. I also have the graphics set pretty low, so there might be some normal details missing...but in general, I agree they've made some very intentional stylistic choices that sacrifice some of the realism.

Something I've noticed about the muted/subtle light is that it actually makes the game more challenging. If there were tons of light rays illuminating the scenery at sunset, it would be much easier to navigate the world and notice more subtle details. Like in my screenshot, you can barely see the Mountaineer's Hut in the bottom right.

I heard about removing car battery's but I do not know how to

Like ThePancakeLady said, not all of them can be removed. Truck batteries are a no-go, but unless a hood is damaged, you should be able to right click them out of cars.

I would also like to invite you one of my favorite threads on the forum:

Hushed River Valley would likely be suicide for me. I don't think I've ever visited the region. I'm willing to bet I'd get lost and freeze to death.

I hate HRV for the same reason. But if you're not against using maps, I find the Whiteberry Toarda-style maps to be really well made and very helpful. I decided it was more fun for me to use the map and experience the region, rather than avoid it completely. https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/2481935065815131776/FA1519D7342C52D1A5DD1A0D193622893D96B7BB/

The variety of atmospheric lighting effects with such varying & spectacular sunsets / sunrises is one of my favorite aspects of the game...

I can't decide if it reminds me more of apricots or peaches.  Hmm... someone's hungry for fresh fruit... 🙂

I was at Trader Joe's yesterday and stared at the "Apriums" and "Plucots" for a while - apparently one is more apricot-ish and one is more plum-y. That sunset makes me think of both. 😂
