Hi all! Where locate the saves files for the Steam version of the survival mode game are now? Sometimes a stupid death occurs. I would like to save at least occasionally...

FYI this isn't the best place to post something like this. If you can't find the answer through independent searching, https://hinterlandforums.com/forums/forum/31-survival-mode/ would be the best thread to post this question in.

However that out of the way I actually do have an answer--assuming you're using Windows, Survival saves are located: C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Hinterland\TheLongDark\Survival

    • Don't load more than 20 kg on the Travois if you need to portage. Otherwise, portaging will mean multiple trips.

Counterpoint: DO load more than 20kg on the Travois, but put your high-quantity low-weight items in there. Carry your batteries etc. in your pack.  Like 20kg of cattails you hoarded from the Muskeg. If you need to portage. drop the travois, go where you need to go, then drop those 2 batteries you're lugging the hard way. Go back for the travois, take everything into your pack, and pick up the travois.

When you get past the blockage, deploy the travois, then dump all those cattails directly back in, then shove the car batteries back in your shirt pocket. A lot less trouble than picking up hundreds of cattails off the ground.

Acorn coffee is one of my favourites and I would totally try it out in real life

Just don't man. I tried it so you don't have to.

    Just ... no.

  4. If I had to recommend one mod above all others, it would be the Developer Console. By itself it doesn't change anything about the game experience, it simply gives you access to additional information and/or controls should you choose to. I don't normally use it when I play for real, but it's fun doing things like seeing how or if wildlife reacts to the Darkwalker.  Trying difficult platforming stunts without worrying about constantly dealing with injuries or death. Or for getting out of a buggy jam, like getting stuck in a bowl on the floor and unable to move or some other ridiculous soft lock.

Like I said I wouldn't recommend it for regular play since it gives you powers beyond that of god, but rather it lets you have fun with it in other ways.

  5. Oh absolutely 100%, I can think of no lore-friendly reason why we can't scoop up a pot of salt water from the ocean, boil the water out of it, and scrape the salt from the pot. I've steam-distilled water myself in the past and if you use normal tap water as a base, you can get about a teaspoon of minerals out of a gallon of evaporated water. Compromising with what's already in play, maybe allow gathering of  unpotable water from beachcombing or fishing holes in coastal regions. If you boil say 1L of water dry, you get 0.01 salt. I know it doesn't make sense why scooping up freshwater snow would result in salt, but that's reality taking a back seat in favor of fun game-play.

  6. I don't know if I had a role in this, but something I've been quite vocal about in the past is the idea of "The Underdark." Inspired by the Dungeons and Dragons environment, the idea was that it would be a region that is entirely underground, with remnants of industry plus a few mysterious objects left behind by anonymous researchers. Key features would be that it would act as kind of a warp zone, with underground exits allowing the explorer to traverse massive swaths of overland terrain in short order.

In my wish list suggestions this was always intended to span the entire island, but it does appear that the Zone of Contamination fits the bill in all other regards. It doesn't span the island, but the exits do span the region. And the majority of the exploration is underground, with no light.

I'm gonna go on with my life believing that this came about because of me. If I'm wrong, that's fine. I'm still carrying on with that belief.

  7. This is just a non-starter, sorry. MelonLoader is not supported on Macs anymore. A few years back I know some users were able to play the mono version of the game, modded, on Mac. But after it switched to IL2CPP (which is not supported on Mac) MelonLoader no longer works on Macs.

That's why you can't mod the game on Mac. It's MelonLoader, not the mods.

do you guys agree with this? do you have something to add? i'm intrested how others feel about this.

Disagree 100% based on realism. When I use my Thermos IRL, I never drink straight from the flask. It's too hot!! I always pour some into a cup and drink from there.

Edit: well I suppose maybe if it were a day old and cold I'd drink from the flask sure, but that's a lot of coding for comparitively little gain IMO.

  9. I'm having massively different experiences with the Travois than everyone else. Mine only degrades with use, it does not degrade with just sitting there, blizzard or no. Clothes stored in the travois DO get wet though.

Probably has to do with the fact that this is a custom game, imported from well before Tales first dropped. Lord only knows what settings I picked at this point.

  10. I'm a big fan of the Travois myself. Even just as a portable storage chest outside a cave or something. Deploy the Travois, stash your gear, and then just never take it anywhere. When you're ready to move out, if you don't have much to haul just take it all into your inventory and hoof it. The Travois only takes damage when you drag it.

75kg of portable outdoor storage that weighs just 1kg when collapsed? You can't afford to NOT craft one. Actually I should look into crafting multiple and just leaving them at my base, in lieu of the rock caches.

I just saw this and it looked exactly like a shared screenshot. To me, my immediate thought was of a screenshot rather than an in-world photo, and it tickled me. There's no deeper joke or reference than that. :coffee:

Yep I was definitely reading too much into it. I was trying to figure out the significance of why the image is flipped horizontally or why there's no 12th in that month lol

The atmosphere is full of acid. That's why everything decays so quickly and you start dying the moment you go outside. If you didn't regenerate like the T1000 your face would melt like that guy on raiders of the lost arc.

This is true, my face melts every day. It totally sucks.

I've never had dysentery either..and I've tried a few times lol..  several litres should've done something,so I gather it's really rare and based on luck..

Wow me either, not even deliberately. Never considered that until just now but that is the one thing I have never actually seen myself. And at this point I think I'm gonna double down and try to never EVER see that for myself. I mean it's been what, 8-9 years? If I haven't gotten it by now I should be golden lol

Although it does make me think of an old wish list idea for "The Underdark" as a region. A massive subterranean region with no sunlight at all, and thus no trees or firewood. If your only source of easy drinking water were to harvest unpotable water from pools on the ground, then treat them with tablets, it would add a ton of value to those. As it is, you only need a handful of sticks (which can be acquired for free.)
