  1. I've asked Raphael van Lierop what did he meant by saying "shortcut" in Twitter and this is his response:

The "shortcut" I referenced was indeed the rope climb from the Pleateau back down to the lowland area approaching the coastline. This is a shortcut in the sense that, otherwise, if you ever want to get up to the radio tower, you need to traverse parts of Forlorn Muskeg, Mystery Lake, and the Ravine Transition -- not a short trip, as you know.

So now we know what is the shortcut...

Unstructured mess of idea dumping inbound:

Im a fan of "Hard Scifi" too, but I think the story falls more into science fantasy now. But it's done very well, they use a sort of magical realism that suspends your belief but also keeps you wondering. When there's an unrealistic thing, it's left mysterious and magical instead of trying to explain it:

150 year demon bear or coincedental story?

Old tech taking the "precursor technology" role now that it's the only stuff that works in a post-digital age. Magical phone-lines, Radios, Elevators, Flashlights, Buffer Memories. Might as well be Halo rings.

Methuselah/Molly: Enigmatic guiding character or figmant of imagination?

Speaking of Methuselah, it was a bug that he was able to teleport down the rope, he was supposed to leave the gas station before you got there. But he doesnt need that bug to question his tangibility.

Do magnetic anomalies cause colder winters though? I know they can possibly irritate animals and nukes at high enough altitudes can fry power grids in a huge area without killing anyone, but I dont know if EMPs and the like affect temperatures. I know global warming can disrupt the usual paths of cold northern air and create more precipitation with more evaporation.

Also. I get that the plane's black box and communications are fried, but after the plane failed to return wouldnt someone on the mainland come looking?

Maybe Methuselah is right and all this is just Nature's doing. And it doesn't need an explanation because there's nothing anybody left behind can do about it except try to not fade into the dark.

I don't think that the event has anything to do with the weather. I don't recall story saying anything about the weather getting colder, but I might be wrong. And Raphael van Lierop suggested that they might in the future make a TLD 2, with changing seasons. This implies that the disaster isn't causing a permanent winter.

  3. My theory when the story mode appeared in 2017 was that aurora was a man-made disaster, caused to cripple furthermore the infrastructure of the Great Bear island and make it man free. The disaster could be caused by a weapon, created by mainlanders as a secret project known only by military. This weapon was found by the Forrest talkers or other radical group, and activated. The proof that supported my argument was that the project was called Wintermute. If you remember, it is high suggested that Jeremiah had been a military. Probably he had found out about the secret project and he quitted, choosing to live a solitary life. But it is just a theory that waits to be proved/disproved.

Did you know the gentlemen who invented (or created) insulin for human use back in 1921, sold the patents for it for $1 each, so everyone could have access to it?

    And they were Canadian.

I love Canada. I kinda owe my life to them, and their country.

    'Nuff said.

And yeah, I love biohackers, too. If they succeed, Americans with IDDM, and people all over the world with the disease, could someday have affordable sources for our life-sustaining medicine, instead of being milked for profits by Big American Pharma. (Yes, I am passionate about it... and I donate to this project. )

(a And yeah, not sure if deer would be a source for insulin for us, but if water buffalo can be, who knows.)((Great link @devamadhu! Thanks for sharing it. Love Hackaday, great site.))

The part about the discovery of the insuline is controversial. You can find out more in the link below.

    https://www.diabetes.co.uk/pioneers/nicolae-paulescu.html

His discovery was neglected by the scientific world during that period, mainly because of the lack of money and resources to publish and continue his research, now being neglected by scientific community.

Given everything she says to you over the phone, and that she went out hunting with a perfectly good rifle, I disagree strongly that it suggests anything of the sort.

You seem to forget that she had an armory in her basement. Isn't it possible that she had more than one rifle? If that's not the case, please explain me why the exploded rifle was even there?

I was hoping for a way to hide this behind a spoiler tag, but since it doesn't look like I can, I've just added a spoiler warning in the title. You should only be here if you've completed Chapter 3.

Apparently resented her marriage, but stayed in it because she'd rather not be alone.

Implies husband was abusive, but never gets into specifics.

One day just snaps, and watches wolves kill him.

    Is now alone.

    Astrid comes along.

Is happy to have company in the house now, especially another woman.

Seems rather insistent that Astrid stay in the house; locks her in both before going out to hunt, and after getting angry for Astrid assuming she's married.

Tone of voice takes an ever-so-slight change when Astrid speaks of Will. Sounds disappointed that Astrid didn't leave Will to die like she did her husband.

Hunts Blackrock Prison escapees for sport.

Calls randomly on the party line. Finds comfort in talking and confiding to Astrid. Likes the company.

Before Astrid goes to the mine to leave Pleasant Valley, asks about Will. Asks if he's "one of the good ones."

Lady is a bona fide Misandrist.

You forget that you find an exploded rifle in Molly's house, which would suggest that she tried to save her husband, but the rifle exploded...

  7. I totally agree with the points made here. I am not sure if I want the remaining 3 episodes that are made in a span of one year, but seeming to be unfinished, or to wait 3 years and have a very, very, very good narrative. To me, this episode seemed unfinished, but still having great potential. I've enjoyed the first two episodes (predux and redux) and they had a great story. But ep. 3 seemed to lack that. And I am afraid that remaking the episodes might become a tradition for Hinterland...

  8. I totally agree with the OP. The actual story seemed to me to be a little thin. It started strong. The first 30 minutes of gameplay were the most intense part of the whole episode, and I was expecting to continue so, only to find out that after Astrid gets to community hall, she doesn't even mention Mackenzie, the aurora or Molly to the father Tom. I was expecting to learn more about what happened in Milton, what happened to Astrid's kid or even what's in the case. And even the notes/letters seemed to be incomplete/short.

    Spoilers alert :)

So I finished the Episode 3 and I wanted to share my honest opion of it. (Sorry for my English I'm French)

My first impression of the episode 3 on the first day was pretty bad to be honest. I didn't liked the walking simulator from the town to the plane then from the plane to the town while having 50kg of materials and a human body on my shoulder and with all that being attacked by 3 wolves... So I stopped playing the tuesday pretty fast. The next day I started all over from the begining with the idea that I should try to not focus on some realistic issues but only enjoy the story and the world.

So the next day I did realy enjoyed the Episode 3 for thoses reasons

-The music is breathtaking as always,

-The idea of the white wolves and the music with it is realy nice and I realy love it (even if it did scared me a lot)

-The story and astrid caracter is great (she wants to help people as a doctor even if as molly said she is not one of the "useful" doctors ;) )

    -Pleasant valley  is beautiful.

-The different legends of the region to give us some loots was a great idea,

-The different PNJ realy looked like they were alive and doing something (in oposition to jeremiah and grey mother)

-The last puzzle game in the mine with the fuze was realy great.

But there is still some things that I would have prefer or change:

-Even if the white wolves were a great idea, I think it should have been more of an special event that happens like 3 or 4 times in the episode with a huge number of 4/5 wolves and the rest of the time we would only get some normal wolves. It would have creat an even more stressful situation when you ear the 3 first note of the music associated with the wolf and that you have a survivor on your shoulder.

-The main story is quiet short, I mean there is not that much of content in the episode 3 (only my opinion not that much but there is still a bunch to do)

-It looks a lot like a walking simulator. I think that I spend to much time walking in this episode and once again "only my opinion"

-I would have liked a side quest to get the bow or the riffle not just finding a riffle in the small cabin in the town that maybe some people didn't looked in it

-It would have been great to not just have some small flash back of the event of milton but maybe a small action cinematic fighting against the prisonners.

I think that's it, there is still a lot to say but even with those small cons, I realy enjoyed my experience of episode 3 and I'm looking forward for the episode 4 and 5 :) (Hope we will play will)

    +1

As I said in an earlier posting, I am playing Ep. 3 at the hardest level and finding hard and very irritating.

I have played around 3,000 games days of Survival with around 90% of that at Voyager to Stalker level so I am far from an inexperienced player.

There are parts of Ep. 3 that I like very much but encounters with Timberwolves are too hard and not enjoyable.  I have spent almost a full game day looking for a survivor that is marked on the map and can't find the survivor.  I feel that I must have covered every square inch of the relevant area three times over.   I am freezing cold, very near to being out of food and water and out of ammunition.  The game has ceased being enjoyable, interesting relaxation.  I don't doubt that the game would have been easier, less irritating and more enjoyable if I had played at an easier level.

My irritation will cool down if I do something else for an hour or two.  Then I shall return to an 850 day Stalker Survival game to see what changes there are in this latest version of TLD.

Eventually I'll get back to Ep. 3 but I'll play at the middle level next time.

    . . . . . . . .

    Additional edit

I didn't give up.   I decided to bash on a rescue another survivor.     While searching for the survivor I went into an old barn.  I was in the closed area at the back, or left end, of the barn, the area with a wooden floor above it.  While in there I heard wolves I had my gun ready pointed at the door though which they must come to get me.

No, it wasn't like that, the wolves that were outside of the building were attacking me and and eventually killed me.  They were outside, I was inside, and there was a wooden wall between us.

I've played the episode on hardened survivor and it didn't seem to me to be too hard. And I am far from an experienced player.

Yes, I did play the Redux and I picked what Grey Mother said and the conversation with Molly. It's just that I expected to learn more about what happened between the crash and the start of Episode 3. The fact that she left a message with her blood for example and her probable encounter with the dam guy doesn't seemed to be covered at all. Maybe this will be covered by a later flashback but that's why I felt that something was missing in the story line, hence my question.

But it seems that I didn't miss anything, just that this part of the story is not covered so far.

Yeah. I think the same. I was expecting to find out more about Astrid and what happened to her.

Well, thanks to @Ice Hole's reference points, I was finally able to clear a couple of my stubborn areas.

Then tragedy struck, as I was looking for higher vantage points between the two main mine entrances... I slipped and ended up wedged between a tree and boulder, and of course I sprained something so it saved while I was wedged in there.

So now, my survivor is presently reenacting "127 Hours."

I submitted a quick report to the Hinterland support portal, just to see if there is any hope at all...  if not, well I guess I get to start again from scratch :D

@BESt, what I'm doing is more of a personal challenge.  I'm already fairly proficient in my survival tasks, and most of my previous deaths really boiled down to bad decisions (as opposed to not having what I needed to survive).  I appreciate the advice though, and for that... Thank you :)

The personal challenge that I'm undertaking is mostly due to a stubborn refusal to let myself advance to higher difficulties until I felt like I've "earned it."  Trying for Faithful Cartographer is really just incidental in me wanting to fully map all of great bear while I work toward my survival goal...and I figure while I'm at it I will also try to earn those last few achievements that I've never really put any priority on getting :D

You are welcome. Usually, I've died the same way... Dumb mistakes will kill you in TLD. My suggestion was more about getting the achievement first, than go for the 500 personal challenge, in order not to lose all your progress. I've got Faithful Cartographer in almost 80 days, and now I am going for 500 days achievement. Anyway, that was my approach. Each player should have his own. I thought my advice will help you. Good luck and don't get frosty!😁

I nearly broke my neck more than a few times, but I think I have Timberwolf Mountain nearly finished.  I noticed today that I still have one little smudge near Echo Ravine (over by the engine)... I'm not thrilled about where it's located.  I'm not sure about some of the edges though, is there anyone out there that can give me some pointers if I am missing anything?  I know I don't really need to clear the whole map to get the achievement... it just feels like the right thing to do :D

I'm not sure which region I'm going to relocate to next... maybe Desolation Point, and then work my way west until I have all of Great Bear mapped out.  I'm on day 116, so it's been slow going.  Now that I have some sound footing, I feel like it will start to go quicker.

I have a suggestion. I've got the achievement several months ago. I've only mapped the locations, because I wanted to map it entirely only after I've got the achievement, in order to pass the days and get the 500 days achievo. This decision was due to frustration caused by dying multiple times when I had only two or three maps more to get it. If you want to, you could do the same... Hope it helps.

Hi. New user, and a pirate here. Let me just tell you that if it wasn't for the pirated version, I would probably have never bought it. In my country, where wages are shit in comparison to most of the "civilized" world and therefore, the games are really expensive. I decided to buy The Long Dark only after I played it for about 40-50 hours, and read your posts about not being vehemently anti-modding, but reasonably protective of your artistic vision. So, there's that. Thank you.

I'm not proud of it and it is hard for me to admit it, but I had a similar story. Some years ago, I used to play only pirated games. I've found about this game online and I've wanted to try it out. Without having a Steam account and any funds to purchase it, my option was to find a pirated game. I liked so much the game, it's community and the developer team that I've decided to purchase a copy of the game, because I've finally understood the effort that was put into making this game. Since then, I've never used any other pirated software/game and I was a devoted player and member of this community. One last time, I'm not proud of it and I want to appologise to the HL team this way.

Okay. I will try to weigh into this discussion, athough I have never used mods and I don't completely understand how they work. I love this game and I highly appreciate the effort  the devs are putting into this game to make it better for their customers. I have played this game for a couple of years and I enjoyed it like it was delivered by HL. Through this thread I've learned a great deal about mods and my question is the following: would it be possible for both the mod community and dev team to work together in order to implement features in the game, whether it is an update or an official mod/s? It would work this way: the mod community offers to HL team the codes, the HL team inspects them, and if it improves the gameplay and respects HL vision regarding TLD, the new features would be implemented in a hotfix, update or under the form of official mods. Features like those listed above by @hozz1235, which, from my understanding, are current mods. Personally, I would enjoy a lot if the tool which I used the last time would be remembered and I don't know if this feature is supposed to work in the current form or not, or it will be changed in the future. I consider that a colaboration between the mod community and HL would greatly improve everyone's experience.

  17. I really like how the crafting system was implemented and worked in the Wintermute. Have you ever thought to implement a similar crafting system in sandbox mode, in which you first needed to find/read books in order to be able to craft/forge items? I consider that the character should gain knowledge in order to know how to craft everything, instead of being an all-knowing survivor from the beginning. Or this difference between Wintermute and sandbox is intended, and if that's the case, I would be interested to find out why.
