  1. I must say I am starting to share your sentiment, OP. I admitedly dont use rifle very often in general, but I was curious to find out. I fired up Hunted part 2, since that allows me to start the game with fresh rifle in 100% condition and 10 bullets, (9 with the one wasted on the Old bear outside). I went on a test run to see what this is about.

I noticed the shaking when cold, which I thought was a nice touch, but I must say out of all 9 shots fired, I have missed 8 of them on deer at various distance, and on 9th shot I was able to hit rabbit at very close distance of about 3 ingame steps. If this is distance neccesary to hit something with rifle on begginer´s skill, it will make the rifle unusuble without studying the books on firearms throroughly.

I will use more fresh challenges to try and figure out the inner workings of this new update, but my first initial feeling agrees with the findings of OP - the new rifle system seems very difficult (which IMHO is something I like, assuming I can figure out how it works and use it efficiently after I figure it out)

Edit: On the second try, I am slowly getting the hang of it. Second game, I actually got mauled by the old bear, so this time I was testing out the try when down to 15% of condition, the damage to condition seems to influence bobbing, altough only slightly (could also be that this was done because the mauling reduced my fatigue to about 85%).

Turns out that they changed what is considered the "tip" of the sights. Used to be that in order to hit , you would aim the very top of the sights to your target (yellow dot in the picture) and that was the area where you would hit. Now, the "hit" area seems to be hidden behind the steel tongue of the sights, about 1 tenth down the sight (red dot in the picture).

    20190507225101_1.jpg.c7a36881ab21c2eacf6c0d7821c91dc9.jpg

Try that out, see if that helps improve the quality of your shots.

I like it. More realistic this way, Id say, also more challenging because you have to determine a bit better where the shot goes by your experience, since its partly obstructed by the steel tongue of the sights.

"What we aren't going to allow is people linking to mods or sharing how to mod the game." - We are not linking mods or sharing how to mod the game so we are good.

My main concern is, the update killed a helpful program that was used solely for the TLD wikia. I dont think thats considered as cheat tool if it is used for wikia, is it?

Please don't discuss game hacks, save editors, cheat engines, or other game-altering software in our official forums. Thank you. Linking the words of one of the Community engagement officers from these Forums, a Staff member. So I wouldnt be so sure about whether this topic is okay or not.

Who adjusts the Wikia? The community, not the Hinterland staff. :)

It may have been a helpful program but I would hardly call it necessary. You can still make screenshots then upload them on the site, manually, right? Might be more tedious but not impossible.

One of the games I play excessively "Torchlight" openly allows modding, and because of that both the first and second game are thriving even though they are getting older - the first being 10 yrs old now.

I fully agree, and even if I wouldn't use them very much personally, I would greatly appreciate official mod support. It would solve the longest standing issue of "game content for survival coming out too slowly" by allowing the community to create official mods which would help people adjust the game to their liking. It would once and for all shut up every person who has ever complained about the lack of content because with official mod support, the amount of content would only be limited by the amount of modders, working on new, official mods. By using official tools provided by Hinterland, which would make these mods protected against any kind of malicious misuse of malware and such practises.

  3. Also, be careful - the Hinterland dont take kindly to discussions of mods, modding of the game and or discussions on this topic, as seen here.

I am not a moderator or any kind, and I am not Hinterland staff, but I study company economics and maybe my explanation of why this is bad will help you people understand why I believe Hinterland cracks down so hard on unofficial mods.

TLD is their product, and as such its protected by author laws. When the game receives official mod support, it means the company created another product which has tools to adjust their original product, through their own tools. With official support, Hinterland can monitor and control the modding and protect the players from potential abuse by modders. But, if someone unofficially mods the game, it means that they illegaly crack through the protective layer of their game, exposes the code which Hinterland has exclusive author rights for, and modifies it through unofficial means, completely out of the control of Hinterland. Problem is that in order to do this, they must break the author law, because the modification happens without the Hinterland´s approval. If the initial means of modding means that this person broke the law, what is stopping them from hiding malicious malware in these mods, to prey on the unsuspecting players? If this happened, the backslash would then fall on Hinterland, whom had no say in the matter in the first place.

To sum it up - in order to create unofficial mod, the modder must break the law. What is stopping them from using this oppurtunity to hide malware within them as well?

I would not be surprised if the TLD unofficial mods were blocked by Hinterland on purpose. The fact that unofficial mods exist opens them up to exposure, if anyone were to be damaged by the use of these unofficial mods, it could hurt the game and its reputation.

That is all I am going to say on this subject because I really don't want to get banned for discussing it. Unofficial mods are a bad idea and you shouldn't be using them, if you love this game and the company that made it.

  4. I am pretty sure that The Long Dark doesnt have official mod support yet. These few mods were created by the community unofficially, and players use them at their own risk. I dont expect the Hinterland will respond to this and if they will, not in a very friendly manner.

I am fairly certain mod support is one of the most commonly requested community suggestions, and as such is probably in Hinterland´s own wishlist for future, but as far as I know, TLD does not have mod support yet.

But I could be wrong, just a regular forum member here. You could probably search around the forums for other Mod related threads and see there what their stance on the subject is.

  5. Well, to add my 2 cents on the pile of tips:

Advanced tip on hunting by using stones.

Put only 1 stone, and the weapon of your choosing into your inventory. Find a deer that you want to hunt, and pull the stone out. Aim in the air above the deer, and throw the stone behind the deer. As the stone is traveling, hit "weapon" quickdraw key again to pull out your weapon.

If you did it correctly, the deer should now be running straight at you. Aim & shoot. A pretty good way to hunt deer with bows, it takes a bit of practise, but it is not that hard in the end. :)

You can use this same thing to convince "rabbits" to start moving towards you instead of away from you.

See, those are specific examples of how to play it safe.  I think that's what people are looking for in this thread.  If I was new to the game and I read that post, it would be meaningless to me.

Gotcha, well, I think it comes down to personal preference. For me, that message was pretty clear and cut, if I was knew, Id understand exactly what it means. :)

What is a risk?  What is safe?

Again, I dont see the point? Id say its pretty clear that within the game, it often comes down to a decision between two choices when doing something - the risky way, or the safe way. So, always go the "safe" way :D

If you have to ask yourself whether it is better to stay indoors and rest up a bit, recover condition, or push through dangerous territory with animals while tired, I think it is pretty clear here what is the safe choice, and what is the risky one :)

Or vice versa--light a ton of lanterns at the summit, then mountain goat down to ground level and view it from the hut.

This I think is more likely to work, I dont know how would one rush it up the Summit so quickly before the lantern fuel ran out. Unless you used several stims, and had prepared a quick route up the ropes, using the ropes that are not naturally spawned, by attempting to climb the other way around.

I think its doable, if one fires up an ML Pilgrim run, and gets lucky on storm lanterns and gasoline cans.

So do you think Fluffy escaped or died in hydro?

Now that is a good question - for a conspiracy thread. :D I should finally start that :D (I think it might be why they put the dead wolf in the Wintermute.)

But then again I hear lore that fluffy escaped out the broken window... So should I still always have a flare in hand when I go to hydro? Most likely not but I still do.

No worries, the Dam is safe, there is so much stuff in there that the wolf would not be able to walk around there no more.

  11. Well, guess there is no point trying to be vague about it anymore. :( I was trying to keep it at least sort-of secretish where the wolves can be generally encountered. Guess the mystery is out now.

I don't know if that was the case with the caves before, more likely it is a case with certain caves, if their pathfinding messed up. Wolves could othervise enter indoor caves all the time, in fact, sleeping in a cave like that on a normal bedroll without a fire can make you wake up to a struggling wolf. Same with a bear.

And that applies to places even where no predators are within the area - such as the summit of timberwolf mountain. At least that is my personal experience.

  12. Snowballs would not scare off predators, all you would achieve is point their attention to you, maybe even piss them off into attacking you.

Snowmen would not be that horrible of an idea. Some Inuit tribes would hunt Deer by creating huge stone constructs that have a rough shape of a man, in a path of a caribou herd. When the herd gets into the position, an actual hunter would scare the herd in the direction of this wall of "stone men" - the caribou get confused and start running away from the stone men, as the tribal hunters run behind these stone structures and confuse the animals, putting them into panic... as the deer run off into the one "free" locations where the real hunters await with spears, and spear the deer that get too close. Id wholeheartedly reccomend the movie Snow Walker - it is, by far, the closest survival movie to what we know as the TLD story mode :D but this method is seen within that movie.

So instead of rock men, Id build snowmen, then spread black & grey ashes over the snowman to make it stand-out color-wise. Make them look like people, and such structure in the game could work as a "static" scare point for the deer within the game. So you would scare the deer in the direction of these statues, then the deer see em, turn back and run straight in your direction, as you ready the bow for a clean, easy, close-range kill.

It's strange to think how weird such phrases would seem to the average layman, uninstructed in the arts of TLD. To us, they are wonderful insights, a murmur of wisdom from one TLD survivor to another

Just a healthy amount of TLD bush-talk :D

Try to light a fire on top of the plane, and go down to the hut. Do it at afternoon, and at night, if it was clear, you can see the fire from the hut...

I might just try to do that. But I dont think that the fire on top of that plane would remain lit by the time Id walk down, even if I were to use my usual short-cut down the cliffs, it would still take at least 3 to 4 ingame hours, in that time, the wind is bound to shift and blow the fire out, it would be way too exposed on the top.

Might try that by setting the fire inside, but on the outer edge of the exposed part of the tail section. Could still be visible, in fact I could probably set a bunch of them next to each other, make it look like its burning in several places.

Right smack in the middle of a total solar eclipse.
(In actuality the graphics glitched temporarily while using charcoal. But the resemblance to the landscape during a total solar eclipse is uncanny.)

Interesting, I had the same kind of glitch with graphics after spending a night in an outdoor cave by the broken radio transmitter above Spences. My bug lasted about half day till it fixed itself... it was very surreal but also quite immersive in a way, for some reason. Maybe because it was the morning after I barely escaped with my life, being chased down by a bear over the ice in the near-pitch black darkness and a fog so thick it could be cut with a knife...

For those interested - during my prep for that screenshot, I discovered that it is possible to climb on top of the summit plane. The broken tree next to it can be climbed, if one is careful, even though it appears to be too tilted, it can be done. Just a little perhaps interesting bit - you can make amazing screenshots when standing on the roof of the plane, close to the edge of it.

First flare incident that brought down the plane on the summit of Timberwolf mountain. Props to @kristaok for inspiring me to do this bit. I might try for a better one if I come across a better, longer, less windy aurora. This one sadly ran out as I was finally able to put down more fires around the place, to simulate the aftercrash.

EDIT: Made a couple of better ones!

  17. Its interesting to see of just how much of an impact it is, not having the efficient machine perk on the deadman´s run. But with the way Redux seemed to have made things easier, I guess its neccesary to keep the challenge of the old mode (not really the well fed bonus, actually like that one a lot, despite the fact that the bonus to carry weight is there, the fact that you are wearing so much more gear just depletes your calories and fatique faster, the only real benefits of it are the movement speed and ability to carry more up the rope, Id still say it is important to choose not to take some equipment you wont need on various runsl What I dont like that much about the buff is the added health and bonus to wildlife protection as a "strenght" boost)

  18. I am not entirely sure if the Hatch note spawns in that particular hidden cache. Id guess that it's more likely it spawns in the last cache you open - there are (I think) 6 different ones, triggered by various notes. But if anyone can confirm that it spawns in the specific cache found by Hunting lodge, let us know.

For people who seem to have a problem opening the door... I think the game has trigger points for quests and you may have missed it. I am not entirely sure since its a few days since I finished the redux by now, but I think that as you approach the bunker (after getting the quest) Will is going to comment on it "Ive been looking for you" or something like that - which could trigger the door as openable. So maybe just go outside the bunker, away from it and approach it again, that might trigger the quest progress. In theory, at least.

Hehe, you are putting the ol´ Prepper Hank from the Story mode to shame. Now THAT is a decent cache of supplies.

Better lock the doors well, or some of our more devious forum members might try to pay you a visit. That coffee alone would fetch a nice price on the black market :D

I thought I had fully explored them...perhaps it was long enough ago I forgot though.

The inhabitant does not always have to be "home" - sounds like you got lucky, or played on a low enough difficulty for the cave-dweller not to show up. Didnt have one in there either in my current Voyager. But there surely is a chance of that happening, and its a DEADLY situation - since those caves are so dark you really need to have a light in there to move around and thus you cant really keep your weapon at the ready, and the halls are so small and narrow and cut around a lot so you can literally turn a corner and stare down a mouth, full of sharp teeth.

And I would not be suprised if there were more caves like that, even now, with the chances of them spawning there just being very small... though the DP one is a quaranteed.

  21. I have a feeling it is actually made in a way that you don't really have much of a choice than to use the stim at least once, because the "sneaking" through the cave part is a pretty long one, and you do lose quite a bit of Fatigue, moving through, waiting, then sprinting into the little crevasses to avoid the bear. Kind of hard to make it into the final chamber without losing at least half the fatigue from a full bar. So the stim can be your shot to even out the odds :)
