Patrick Carlson Posted August 14, 2015 Posted August 14, 2015 Today I look at two examples of Siberian survival--a documentary detailing life along Russia's Yenisei river, and the story of a family that lived alone on a mountaintop for 40 years. They are two very different interpretations of life in one of the world's most remote forests. Can you imagine surviving in similar situations?
danicusrex Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 The Werner Herzog documentary "Happy People"? I watched that again yesterday! Gives me ideas for this game, for sure!
Patrick Carlson Posted August 17, 2015 Author Posted August 17, 2015 The homemade mosquito repellent cooked out of tree bark seemed especially clever. The film really highlights how resourceful and adaptive human beings can become when the environment demands it of them.
IcyWolf Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Aha, Happy People: A Year in the Taiga! I just watched this documentary like 2 weeks ago on Netflix, and funny that the reason I chose to watch it because it reminds me a lot of TLD
danicusrex Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 It would be kinda awesome to be able to construct some variation of the koolyomka (the sable trap) in TLD. His homemade skis are another thing that seem really useful.
Patrick Carlson Posted August 19, 2015 Author Posted August 19, 2015 How deft he is with his hatchet is almost magical. He uses a chain saw to fell the tree but then makes the skis pretty much by hand (and fire).
doggonemess Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 * Cough cough * Sounds familiar. viewtopic.php?f=53&t=6655#p38381
Patrick Carlson Posted August 29, 2015 Author Posted August 29, 2015 And that's a really nice piece, doggonemess!

Patrick Carlson Posted August 31, 2015 Author Posted August 31, 2015 That looks like a version of the original documentary by Dmitry Vasyukov. I'd never seen that before. Thanks for sharing this!
danicusrex Posted September 1, 2015 Posted September 1, 2015 Yeah, there's two versions. I prefer the Herzog narrated one, but that's at least partially because I love his voice.
