Game crashes on survival mode trying to leave Coast Highway

My first run on the updated game started in Coastal Highway.  After 54 days I tried to exit the region for the first time - trying to enter Ravine.  The game freezes - the walking deer, wolf or bear never appears in the bottom right corner.  Even after 10 minutes nothing happens.

I end up having to restart my PC to get out of TLD.  After 2 attempts I have concluded I cannot enter Ravine.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar trying to move between regions?
