That's what I get for taking a hasty uphill shot at a deer and missing.  Bye bye arrow unless anyone knows a way to retrieve these things.  The only thing I can think of that I haven't tried is leaving the region (HRV) and coming back to check if the arrow is placed on the ground.

sleep for an hour right beneath it to create a save, then quit and reload game a few times, it may fall down

Thanks for the suggestion, but no luck.  I've tried creating a save and exit/restart.  I just tried leaving the region, saving and restarting, hoping maybe the arrow would show up in a lost and found box.  No box, and the arrow is still stuck in the tree.  Oh well... as long as this life lasts, the arrow will be a reminder of my sloppy aiming!

Sounds like a challenge - keep this character alive until the next update and see if that works!  I doubt they'll change Hushed River Valley for story mode though.
