Dropping items off a cliff

Is there a way to stand at the edge of a cliff, that has a mountaineering rope and drop items off the edge, until you are no longer encumbered? Then you can shimmy down and pick up the items when on the ground.

Many items roll on the snow.  These items will roll off of a cliff if it is sufficiently sloped when dropped near to the edge.  But not all items roll.  So it takes a bit of doing to do what you are wanting to do.
