  1.   In 1988 Helen Thayer, at the age of 50, skied to the north pole as the first woman to have done so and wrote a book about it.  All her equipment was dragged in a sled behind her, and she had a companion dog (who ended up saving her from polar bears).  She faced challenges that would've killed many of us.  Her last week on the journey she barely ate because of a blizzard that tipped her sled, leaving behind only a baggie of walnuts.  She only had basic technology (gps's were experimental at the time) and no refuels, vehicles, and her only weapon was a heavy rifle that was always at risk of freezing to the point of useless.  She jumps across cracks in the oceans ice, climbs over pressure ridges, and, somehow makes it back safely.

A thrilling read, would highly recommend.

What about powdered sugar and wild blueberries…?

I'm just a New England snob who lived on the border of canada in the most maple filled part of New England.  I'm still sticking to my answer, although, wild blueberries would be a good addition...

  4. The lighthouse at Desolation Point is my favorite place (probably in the entire game).  But the Quonset garage is often my place where I gather all my stuff, or the town hall in Thompsons Crossing, sometimes the Camp office, the gerage shop in Broken Railroad, as well as the cabin in TWM.

  5. I was in coastal highway I think, over by a fishing hut on Stalker difficulty, see a wolf, no torches, one rifle bullet.  I use it, it drops dead and I go over and harvest it.  When I'm done I look up and there is a bear at the fishing hut, rearing on its hind legs.  My heart immediately spikes to about 2000 bpm and I fumble around, hold my flare gun with my single shell and fire as it charges at me.  The shot hits it in the head and it drops at a steps length.

My little sister had been watching me and we both had to pause the game and breath for a moment, lol.

  6. I think I've written these ideas somewhere else but here's my two cents,

Extremist Vegan: Preferred difficulty (voyaguer is mine), Nothing from animals (meat, hide, gut) plus no "pork and beans" or cans of sardines, no condensed milk or any dairy at all, and the hardest part: No leather, wool, fleece... Anything from animals or fish or whatever (only two pairs of shoes far as I know: Running shoes and Insulated boots, both say "Made of synthetic mateirials")  Main challenge is not freezing or starving.

Wandering Crafter: custom settings with interloper loot and the rest your preffered difficulty (not a good challenge if you already play interloper, mostly to explore and get used to the loot setting)

Carnivoire: Only meat or fish (no pork and beans in this one either, lol), only clothes made of animal matierial if you want to do that as well. (basically @hozz1235's Naturalist idea, which I like as well)

Runner Nomad: sleep one night in each region, no more (bring lots of coffee!)

Gun Collector: Collect every gun in the game to one place.  Could also do Librarian and collect every book instead.

A combination of any of these?  Idk, have fun!

First peice of TLD fanart (also the first time I ever drew a wolf).

One of my favorite things in this game is wondering around in the nighttime with a torch and then hearing the lone howl of a wolf, and soon after that seeing their glittering eyes on the edge of shadow and light from the torch, barely keeping them at bay.

  8. I don't go for long term-survival because I get bored too fast.  If I live over 50 days in a run I up the difficulty for next time.  I now mostly play Stalker.

I only actually get upset if I lose the world to something really dumb like falling off the ravine bridge, or bleeding out in my sleep, or losing the run to a save bug (all of which have happened).  But if I lose it to starvation or dissorientation in a blizzard or an attack by a bear, then so be it.

  9. dude, Liam, this game got me into bushcraft stuff too, which led me to the American Mountain Man Association (AMMA), which is a community of people who get together at rendevous to talk and meet friends and they do a bunch of survival stuff.  To be a mountain man you have to pass a bunch of criteria like clothes making, muzzleloading, skinning and starting fires with flint (they don't use matches at all).

Also 18 bro, call me Clay.  I am also cool with chatting anytime about whatever.

      Nice to meet you, Liam.

Yeah it sounds decent. It would be nice to have some indication of how long you can sleep without dying of dehydration too. Adding that in would make the game nicer to play so I wouldn't have to figure out the max duration of sleep.

Eh, I just assume 8 hours when full, then guess off that 🤷‍♂️

I lost my longest stalker run this way.  At least notify me when I try to sleep while bleeding, please.  I do not really think this is handholding a player, this is just preventing death from a really easily avoidable thing, it's just that it's not easy to remember sometimes.  I don't know, but I don't think it would ruin anything because it would only interupt very rarely (only once in my case) 😄

And, alright, I'll admit that it is handholding, but I very much do like this idea:

I can imagine a thing where icons for any afflictions you have flash up on the sleep menu. A bit like how your food and water meters show up when you're eating or drinking. And you still could sleep, but at least you're being shown your afflictions right as you're ready to hit 'sleep'.

  11. Yes the teddy bears!  This is making me think of this topic:

This may seem completely out of the blue, but I'd love to be able to pick up the teddy bears that spawn around the map. Maybe even an achievement for collecting all the teddy bears on Great Bear.

It'd just be nice to have a friend in the lonely Canadian wilderness, even if it's a stuffed animal.

Please, let me collect the teddy bears.

  12. Thanks for responding @YKMini, good to know.

Around here it will get damn cold, but rarely ever has even a foot of snow, but since it's windy the drifts will become several feet deep.  I found one last winter (which all the locals said was a pretty bad one) that was probably eight feet deep, or for all you canadians, about 2 2/3 meters.  The winter before that only had about six inches.

Thanks for the map as well!

  13. I have learned more about BC by starting this topic than I have in my entire life (embarrassingly, I thought Vancouver was on the east coast *face slap*)

Also, @UpUpAway95, I like that map you posted in the link, if that happened it would be pretty hardcore, but makes a little sense that the northernmost part could be Great Bear Island if the game takes place a bit in the future and it's not just earthquakes, but entire tectonic plate shifts.  (phew, we finally got rid of California! 😅)

  14. These are awsome!  Keep going, 'necro man!'

My favorite is In The Woods (on the first page) because it literally looks like my backyard back home in New England.  I swear, I have been there, the artist just forgot to put my footprints in the snow.

Also, @stratvox, who is the artist of your profile picture?  It looks awfully similar to some of these other artists work... 😁
