  1. Not a huge amount to add to what everyone has said, update sounds terrific!

Cougar: I was looking forward to the cougar, and I thought maybe it might be stealthy etc, but utlimately, just another predator, ie: fun but not game changing and something you end up skirting around.  Huge credit to Hinterland for the implementation they are suggesting, I think the idea that your persistance in an area triggers the animals interest, that is such a great idea and will make everyone concious of their bases and when and how they use them.  I know some people lead a very nomadic style, but I thnk it's fair to have a new style of predator and you just have to stay in the same place to trigger it!  Also the idea of hunting the den to clear them out for a while is also spot on

Permadeth chances:  Not sure it's for me, but a great idea, and as @Adminsaid, who knows until I see the offer on the screen after a particularly annoying death, I may choose to use it!  So seems a very sensible way to implemement it without affecting the  'no extra lives' dynamic, which as has been mentioned, people get around with save files anyway.

Misery mode:  I am not a mega interloper player, though I do have a run I keep dipping into, but I am sure people will appreciate a bit of love on the mode as I know it is very popular.

Mountain Pass: Loved both the new regions so far, from the vast open plains of Forsaken Airfield to the claustrophobic tunnels in The Zone of Contamination, so cannot wait!

More Tales!!  I have so enjoyed the tales so far, the strange unsettling story and odd locations, I could explore these kind of stories forever!

    Anyway, great job!

Is not that easy. When you have played for years there are countless times you have left for a trip not fully equipped because mainly over-confidence, and :

    A) you want to check a spot before returning to base... you dont want to make the long trip again, so you venture with some of your items depleted, even fuel. Lets not forget that in a blizzard and at night you need A LOT of fuel to not freeze outdoor (if you got lost for example).

    B) simply being lazy, "i can do that without problem" , but then you meet a bear behind a turn, you fall from a rock, a struggle with a wolf ....

    C) many incidents at work happen for people being over-confident , so expert workers (or players in this case) are even more prone to errors because of over confidence.

    D) at Stalker for example loot is a big motivation to play, so you tend to go light to be able to carry more... And often you carry less "fuel" that is one of the most heavy thing.

I agree on this, I died in stalker mode once on Bleak Inlet, entirely due to over confidence and basically being greedy, and it was a reminder for me after 1000s of hours of play you can get things wrong,.

But then even now one still takes risks, my main character got suprised by a bear in fog and stumbled back on about 15% condition, but thats what makes the game great, with no fast travel and hacks, sometimes you just think, its a quick walk, I don't need to take x and y, and of course 9 times out of 10, you don't need to take them.

That said, I think the main thing that saves 'expert' players IMHO is map knowledge, when you know the maps really well, you can very often get yourself out of most scrapes, and I suspect that has saved my life more than any bit of kit.

Let's also try not to be condescending about Pilgrim.

Completely, one of the pleasures of TLD is the different difficulties make for very different play, our main run is on stalker, but we have others on the other difficulties because they present a different style.

I really like pilgrim sometimes as it's a really nice exploring, and organising experience because sometimes I am not in the mood for constant trials of interloper which can be repetitive.

Also, after the third time of trying I finally have 500 days!! All PS4 achievements complete!!  My first try ended at 250 days with a game save corruption, the second interrupted by the new update but finally!!

    Yeehah!

  4. My name is after a character in a book by the late great Fritz Leiber, I’ve run a website on him since 1994 and had the pleasure of contributing to a couple of collections of his stories..

the avatar is a still frame from an animation I produced (I’ve always been an animator/ editor and latterly Director all my life), the animation was  part of the work I did on some recent videos for the fabulous old goth / punk band , The Damned…

  5. You never can tell, years ago in a tiny little village in Belgium I found a great Goth club.. people travelled for miles, the goths must have outnumbered the villagers!

Nothing comes for free. We make these choices and trade-offs all the time. The only easy thing here is posting in forums.

Nothing comes for free is such a good phrase.

I have spent my life as an animator and editor (not for games I should point out), mostly for very large clients and agencies, who still think eveything is just a quick change.  sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't, but very often by the time the change has been noted, fedback on, agreed, changed, viewed, revised again and finally signed off, a 'five minute job' is half a day... and there are 20 quick changes, which invariably take days...

I am just dealing with animation, not as complex as an interactive development like a game...

So I take him at his word. For me, I'd rather they spend their development time (which is finite) making a great, rock solid game, than one that is infinitely customisable.

I think Raph also makes a very important point about the voices on here, as opposed the the many many thousands of players, who just play, or have just started playing. We are not typical, we are more engaged and obsessed I guess.  I always think of political parties, whose actual members are WAY more extreme than the voting public, of course they have to have a voice, but it's often a hugely passionate voice that isn't representative of the wider voter.. so has to be taken with that caveat.  That should never stop us venting our spleens so to speak, but we should do it with some humility in realising we do not speak more 'most' or even a signficant minority of players.

That said, apart from the grumbling, I've always found this a very good natured forum and there are some really nice, supportive and knowledgeable people on here!

I think if Scurvy had been blanketed across all saves... so many people would have been blindsided and likely furious about it.  "Just woke up with advanced curvy and died... I quit... [expletive - expletive - expletive]"

    :coffee::fire::coffee:

I think this is it, given how overly dramatic things can get on here when someone doesn't like a change, I suspect they just erred on the side of caution, and you can't bring a run back when they die!

Yeah, it's not great, but it's the right decision. There are two choices:

Yes, I agree here, I guess the could have com eup woth some hybrid option, but it seems like a sensible solution to me.

We are on our second attempt at 500 day run... first one after 250+ had a corrupt save file, and our new character is at 350, so once we hit 500 we will open a new game and have fun with scruvy!

  9. I have just seen a glorious gig in London (music from the Wicker Man played live) and as I sat on my seat in the train at King’s Cross, I thought I’d check to see if there was news..

This looks glorious! Can’t wait to get stuck in tomorrow,  and huge congrats to all at Hinterland, have a great Christmas break.

    What a great night!

  11. So somewhat related, what is the thing with flare shells, after the carcase disappears I generally find a flare shell floating in the air?

About 10% of the time I cannot pick it up... I mean I am not complaining, I am sure some of my shells have been used 3 times.

I did have a flying bear in Bleak Inlet, which got on the roof of the house by the inlet and then flew around so I had to shot it from below, now that was an experience!

Honestly, I don't think it matter what IRL items contain vitamin C and which ones don't.  HL is very likely going to designate which items in the game contain Vitamin C and are, therefore, going to have to be eaten at a designated frequency to avoid getting the scurvy affliction.

Oh I completely agree, I was just pointing out clarifying some points being made, Birch Bark does have Vit C and you can find Citric Acid in things other than Citrus fruit... may as well get these things correct IRL, in the game, I don't mind, I am sure it will be fun!

  13. Apologies I misread the Citric Acid, though it is not only in Citrus Fruit, it is also, for example the primary acid found in Rose Hips... it would almost certainly have been added to the Tomato SOup too?

but you did suggest Vitamin C wasn't in Birch Bark?

Citric acid is found only in citrus fruits.

Birch bark doesn't contain vitamine C. There is acid used in Aspirin works as anelgetic.

    Just for the record....

Birch bark is rich in potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, iron, phosphorus, vitamin C and thiamine.

Vitamin C is found in Citrus fruits AND Tomatoes, Broccoli, Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower and White potatoes

to appeal to folks who can't just appreciate strolling around and dying to bears and wolves and cold, and okay maybe the aurora made them a little crazy...

But we already appreciate them?  They are not being taken away, the new region is just that, a new region, different, and if it is not your thing, avoid it.

As I said earlier, I don't tend to enjoy HRV as it is so barren, but, to misuse a phrase Vive le Difference!  Surely the Great Bear is big enough for everything?

  17. 1 hour ago, Mistral said:

Yes indeed. Some of these items can already be tweaked through mods thankfully, but the problem with mods is that they can get broken anytime there's update. Or they get broken when mixed up with other mods. Or they get abandoned. And they only work on PC

The other option (for some of these) is to pretend they don't exist, but that's not that fun either

I agree, in many games it just doesn't matter, but when you want your characters to last for potentially hundreds of days, it's just nice to set it up the way you wanted, as sometimes ignoring it isn't an option...

  18. I am not sure 'We're' straying.  I understand it may be diverging for you, which I appreciate is a bummer.... but we're straying suggests a concrete bible that must be followed from Day 1 to eternity?

I love the mythical / conspiracy stuff, I have lots of very empty rural maps like HRV, ASh Canyon, PV, Forlorn Muskeg and Broken Railroad, so something different, more industrial is fine for me.  Plus even on the more inhabited maps, much of it is still nothing.

I guess for me, it's already big enough for endless survival, I like the changes and challenges as the give me a range of textures to try, and as I said, I don't really want another pleasant valley or HRV as I already have them!

I don't tend to play HRV or Ash Canyon much as I don't enjoy them, but they are there for those that do.  I also suspect from Hinterlands point of view, churning out more and more empty barren regions with no new mechanics would be an awful  lot easier!

Where I would agree with you was if they were filling existing areas with poisonous wolves and changing the feel of the existing regions, hopefully they can navigate that narrow path between pleasing people who like the more storytelling dark apocalyptic vibe and those who just want the pure survival!
