  1. I rarely if ever find Prepper Bunkers in TLD, but when I did rarely stumble across one, it never really looked like sort of thing a prepper would live in, let alone design.

Sure, the inside was stocked with loot, but it felt less like an actual prepper's hideaway, and more like someone's basement with a bed crammed in.

    But now...

    1542385190_enhancedprepperbunker.thumb.jpg.4188f6861e1bfcb1d3c72a099dc41778.jpg

    Whoa. Now that's a prepper's hideout.

A corkboard filled with all sorts of notes and theories and speculations. A radio setup to monitor what is (and will be) happening. And plenty of boxes of food and water, because you can't survive an apocalypse on an empty stomach.

Even the walls and ceiling look well-fortified, as though the bunker was purpose-built to survive a nuke. Which it probably was, all things considered.

I can hardly wait to explore a place like this.

It's a nice romantic idea but that's probably as far as it will ever go I'm afraid.

I'm a huge lover of wolves but in reality I know that they can never be truly tamed .

Look, TLD is a game where I can get nearly devoured by a ghost, harness the power of aurora borealis to open doors, and lose the ability to sleep from a little bit of spicy fog.

I think they can afford to bend the rules a little bit to make wolf taming possible in game.

  3. I originally got this concept from Rainworld, another great game.

What if, after a little bit of time and effort, you could tame a wolf, just like our ancestors once did billions of years ago?

Just drop some scraps of food over the course of a week (or two, depending on your Wolf Fear setting) and they'll gradually grow attached to you. Dog Food is especially effective at this, being specially designed for dogs to eat. As time goes on, the wolf will gradually become less hostile to you and let you approach. Eventually, you can get close enough to feed it directly.

After it's fully tamed, you can feed it, use it for hunting, and most importantly... pet it.

But how would you distinguish it from other wolves? Simple. Give it a collar.

Cloth Collar: Craftable by hand using 3 cloth, 1 scrap metal, and a sewing kit. Not much protection, but it's better than nothing. Cannot be found, must be crafted.

Leather Collar: Craftable at a workbench using 3 leather and 1 scrap metal, with a sewing kit. Can also be found in civilian areas, more commonly outdoors than indoors, and in dog houses. Provides some protection to your lupine companion.

Spiked Collar: 3 cured leather, 3 scrap metal, and quality tools at a workbench gets you this beauty. It can also be occasionally found at junkyards and industrial locations, and very rarely in civilian houses. Provides good protection to your lupine companion.

Kevlar Harness: Special spawn item. Very protective. Once used by police officers, and as such spawns in relevant locations. Cowichan Sweater levels of rare, but it's worth it.

Just remember to help it if it gets into a struggle with another wolf or a larger creature. If it doesn't have kevlar, it might take some hits.

    TODO:
    >Figure out some way to get one up and down a mountaineering rope (piggybacking? modified pet carrier? maybe some kind of mountaineering rope harness?)

  4. Here, have a couple additional ideas, too.

    Prepper's Rifle
An all-black rifle with a custom scope. Looks like it was intended to be used on small game. Clunky, but you probably won't find a faster fire rate anywhere else.

It's a plinking rifle. 10 rounds of revolver ammo, a short scope, and a black paintjob. Heavy, awkward, and fragile, yet fast-firing and accurate.

Found in one of the two blinds in Forlorn Muskeg.

    Veteran's Rifle
A genuine Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mark 1 rifle that may have actually seen the trenches of World War 1. Some say the original owner still haunts the rifle, but that can't be true. Ghosts aren't real... right?

An ordinary-looking Rifle with a sling and notches in the stock. Grants considerable aim assist and extends the scope-in timer.

Found on the rifle rack in the Hunting Lodge in Broken Railroad.

    Sydney's Revolver
A heavily customized revolver, which was once carried by an eccentric detective. Its simplistic exterior and grip hides a well-oiled interior and a high-quality barrel. Comes with a speedloader, as he always carried it empty- not wanting to risk his career with a hasty shot.

A revolver that's slightly heavier than normal, but degrades less per shot and reloads with a speedloader- dumping all rounds onto the ground, spent or not, and loading in a fresh six bullets. The black fiberglass grip is accentuated with grey speed tape, and the main body is an unusual chrome color.

Found in the lone car on the highway to Forsaken Airfield.

    Enthusiast's Revolver
This monster of a revolver reasonably belongs in a display case. Be careful that you don't bruise your shoulder when firing it, as it doesn't come with a stock to absorb the recoil.

A 5 round revolver that takes rifle bullets. Horrendous recoil (may even cause you some Pain as it nearly dislocates your shoulder), but light and quick. Not that you're likely to hit any shots with it, of course.

Found in a travel case in the Pleasant Valley crash site.

    Hunter's Pistol
An outdated break-action single shot pistol, chambered in .303 and clearly used for hunting. Has a custom grip designed to absorb the recoil of the large cartridge used.

Technically a Flare Gun variant, chambered in rifle bullets. The lightest """rifle""" alternative, but can only hold one round in its magazine. Inspired by the Thompson Center Contender.

Found at the Mysterious Signal Fire in HRV.

One of my ideas is make appliances such as the oven and the microwave usable during the aurora borealis. This could be used as an alternative to cooking in survival Mode.

Aurora borealis? At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localized ENTIRELY within your kitchen?!

In all seriousness, though, this would be amazing. As long as the coffee machines turn on, too. Would be pretty cool to see an espresso that could only be made using a coffee machine, which would be stronger than the "coffee" made by sprinkling some coffee beans in a pot. Give me my caffeine, Hinterland.

Alternatively, there could be a story DLC set shortly before the quiet apocalypse that would let you interact with some new electricity-based mechanics and see the first flare first-hand.

Ooh, like a side story set from Jace's point of view! I like that idea!

  6. Duct tape. Originally developed for military purposes in 1943, the simple adhesive quickly became a staple of any handyman's tool kit. It's even been to the moon and back. (Literally. The crew of Apollo 17 brought some with them.)

Surely there's at least one handyman who needs a quick-fix for one of the thousand air ducts on Great Bear. Plus, you can clearly see a few duct tape patches on some of the damaged clothing items, most notably the Light Shell and Windbreaker.

So why can't you find any?

The concept behind this is simple. You would find rolls of duct tape in Industrial locations- most notably Carter Hydro Dam- and the construction sites in Milton.

It would lose maybe 5% durability for each action, and could be used for:

    • Patching holes in your clothing. Repairs less than a sewing kit, but does it faster.
    • Patching holes in your tools, in a similar manner to clothes. It's not the greatest fix, but it'll hold, and it can be done when you need it most.
    • Patching holes in you. Yes, that's right. While not exactly advised by your doctor, duct tape can be used to close wounds quickly. Not designed as a permanent fix (in fact, it wasn't designed for this at all) but could reasonably serve the purpose if need-be.
      • Duct Tape can only be used to Patch two wounds: Burns and Blood Loss. Patching a burn with Duct Tape will give an extra stack of Pain, but close the wound quickly. Patching a bleeding wound with Duct Tape has a chance of additional infection risk, but- again- seals it quicker than a normal Bandage.

  7. I just prefer Astrid because Will's damage grunts are way louder and his voice lines sound less realistic. Sorta like the Nate vs Nora debate in Fallout 4. She's quieter, has more realistic responses to circumstances (especially the Darkwalker), and is generally more relatable. Also, she looks more like the Human version of me, so there's that.

  8. Reposting this story here because it's funny as hell. From the "Emergency Stim" section of The Long Dark's wiki. Originally by AKDragonfly, all credit goes to him.

Slept on these for years. 100+ hours of gameplay and I only used 1 in a last ditch effort to save my azz after I fell through the ice. I didn't make it, and wrote them off as useless. That is until I took a run at the first Old Bear challenge last year.

I was ALMOST at the end - the railroad line - the very last leg before the Trapper's Homestead, but I could hear it behind me. The guttural, primal Mongolian throat singing of Death's beloved pet hellbeast. The animated remains of the illegitimate lovechild Zach Galifianakis would birth after he made sweet love to a giant, prehistoric ground sloth. The rancid breath spewing from the maw of a Super-Sized Zowie from Pet Sematary 2 accompanied a gargled Perish Song for an audience of one. I stared into the abyss and it stared back.

I knew he'd have my liver for dessert if he caught me (assuming he had room for dessert after he'd consumed my soul). I was clawing through my inventory for a Hail Mary at the speed of f!ck when I saw this thing. This pointless little paperweight I'd looted from a prior victim. I shrugged, having long since abandoned the idea of greeting Daddy Death with my dignity intact. At the behest of my primordial lizard brain who struggles to separate fantasy from fact whilst tits deep in "OH SH!T" panic juice, I hit 'em with the ole reliable:

    "F!ck it."

Adrenaline. My. Azz. That shit was laced with more controlled substances than Robert Downey Jr.'s bloodstream pre-Burger King. I pushed that f!ckin' plunger down and I swear I saw the face of whatever Eldritch being sits upon the usurped and blackened throne of heaven. It was like ordering the sample platter at a St. Louis Applebee's, except the whole payload hits you at one time, and the corpse you took it off of was already dead when you got there. We're talking HGH, PCP, MDMA, the same concoction of concentrated Speed they give to f!ckin' fighter pilots, more caffeine than the average college student consumes in a year, and a shot of Bruce Banner's Incredible Gama-roids™ for good measure. I sprinted practically bear-azz nekkid (get it I'm hilarious) all the way to the Trapper's cabin like there was a lifetime supply of Taco Bell nacho fries calling my full legal name.

When I reached the doorstep, I turned to face my thwarted Undertaker, vibrating at a speed that threatened to forcibly remove me from the visible spectrum. We stared at each other - the hunted prey and the apex predator - and I waited for that sweet, sweet rush of endorphins to bathe me in the thrill of victory.

But when my dime-sized pupils met the cruel, merciless, black gaze of a beast older than God himself, the rage and hatred melted away...

And all I saw was myself.

  9. Here's my 10 cents.

LEPER'S SOLACE - You are constantly losing 0.5% condition per hour. (Obtained by surviving with Blood Loss for 24 hours.)

SPOTTER'S NIGHTMARE - The fog follows you, even outside of the Far Territory. (Obtained by spending 12 hours total in the Glimmer Fog.)

BLOOD-SOAKED SHROUD - Injuries are more debilitating and require occasional re-treatment. (Obtained by treating 100 injuries total.)

HYPERALGESIA - You suffer from a permanent, incurable Pain status affliction. (Obtained by being awake and in Pain for 6 hours total.)

TRAUMATIC STRESS - Due to a stressful situation in your past, you are incapable of Struggling against Wolves. (Obtained by losing a Wolf struggle 3 times in a single life.)

DARKWALKER INSTINCTS - You suffer from a permanent, incurable Insomnia status affliction. (Obtained by surviving against the Darkwalker for a full 3 days total.)

PACIFISM - Your hands shake while aiming a weapon, and you start below Level 1 for each weapon stat. (Obtained by completing the Pacifist achievement.)

SCHIZOPHRENIA - You will occasionally hear and see things that are not there, and may occasionally become Anxious. (Obtained by getting the Cabin Fever affliction 3 times in a single life.)

Isn't a rifle and a revolver a technology? I very much doubt that they grow out of the ground!

You're splitting hairs here. This game takes place in the early 2000s, when drones were in the early stages of development. I doubt they would have any on Great Bear Island of all places due to its remote nature.

I discovered this game four or five years ago. I understand perfectly well that cars don't drive, and computers and a flashlight only work during the glow. But these things work! Why not give the player the opportunity to recharge the battery from bare wires or sockets?

Recharging a battery... from bare, live wires.. while the battery would realistically self-charge due to the Aurora's effect on flashlights... How much do you know about quadcopters, exactly?

Easy - unlimited launches, the drone draws terrain, transitions to other locations, key points, climbing stones, small objects (carcasses, plants, firewood)
Normal - 7 launches, the drone draws terrain, transitions to other locations, key points, climbing stones.
Hard - 5 launches, the drone draws terrain and key points (only large buildings)
Very Hard - 3 launches, the drone draws only the terrain.

You'd have to revamp the entire map for this to work. Not exactly feasible.

  11. So, previous run was terrible. Got attacked by a bear,  then while fleeing managed to get ambushed from behind by a wolf. I wasn't even listening to music, I should've heard it, and yet before I could even take a shot it lacerated me and killed me.

So, I load up Milton again, because that's my favorite starting location. Pop into the Milton Credit Union in the dark, crack the safe, and...

    Wham.

Idk ıt counts but ı found a death note key at miners folly in Ash Canyon. The key opens a box (some heavy fish in there) upon a boat next to Anglers Den

I found another note in Mountainers Hutt (and ıt refers to Chasm Case ı guess) but ı haven’t gone yet.

Btw ı did not buy DLC yet ı just start a new survival save.

Oh yeah, the Mementos! I found three of those, they didn't seem that interesting.

It really wasn't worth it to go up past Rickety Foot Bridge in BR just for 3 cured saplings in a lockbox.

    • A fishing rod, for ocean fishing
    • Pre-generated maps you can find, because cartography is rarely if ever used
    • Overhauled Memento inventories, because I really don't think three Cured Birch Saplings are worth going up to Rickety Foot Bridge
    • More common Shortwave Radio spawns, because I couldn't find a single one in Forsaken Airfield. (Checked Final Approach, ATC, Main Hangar, and Mindful Cabin- no dice. Maybe put one at Surfeit Trestle in Far Range Branch Line?)
    • Fix for Helicopter interiors- you can only sit in 4/6 seats, and as such can only access half of the containers
    • Markings on the coal chute in Vacant Depot, because I thought it was unintentional until I saw the door on the side
    • More details on where Vaughn's Rifle spawns- didn't see it in Vacant Depot when I stopped by

That's all I can think of as of now.

Sure.  Fixed stock, max 2 items, things like sodas and ketchup chips only.  Really don't want to see a vending machine dispensing socks or pistols on demand.

Well yeah, of course. Only the things you'd see in a real world vending machine.

Sodas, chips, jerky, candies. The occasional water bottle or rare Go! Energy Drink. That's it.

  14. So, I get the TFTFT DLC, and open up to this:

Do you guys see Forsaken Airfield on here? I don't.

Where is it? Why do I have a bad feeling it's connected to Broken Railroad past that one bridge? Surely they wouldn't nestle it in with Timberwolf again, right?

A randomly-stocked vending machine might work (fixed stock) that is accessible during the aurora.....

Good to see people came around to the "vending machine" idea. Nobody picks up cash in game, so I think it'd be a decent way to make a useless item into something worth carrying.

Got a couple of ideas about how it should be designed, too. Unlike the broken glass-front vending machines you see in game, the functional ones should have metal fronts (or at the very least a wire mesh over the front) to show why they weren't just broken into.

    Sorta like this one.
