Oh man, I was trying to survive while lost out in Ash Canyon and I set up a fire in a place protected by the wind, but the snow shelter was not allowed to be placed anywhere near it for no discernable reason.

It was all snow and flat ground, but it showed up RED for everywhere except for this tiny spot which was not close enough to get the benefits from the fire radius.

Interesting guess I've been lucky then. (Sorry for the late response)

  2. just saw this in another thread and it seems like mod support is planned, unsure if this includes consoles but nonetheless it is planed and it seems they agree with waiting for the game to be fully developed

    12 hours ago, Admin said:

We've previously said that working on a system of mod support is something that is a goal for the team. What we would like to have is a way for modders to create mods, and share them and an easy way for players to install them while knowing that installing a mod will not adversely affect their game, or system. That is something we need to figure out on our end, how we want that system to work and our goals with it.

So we agree that allowing players to mod their own games is a goal, at this point without official mod support we are unable to offer any form of technical support on modded games. Thus installing a mod risks not only breaking your game in some way, but also won't get support from our team to fix it. While there are people who know enough to be able to break their game and fix it on their own, a large percentage of players don't have that sort of technical skill.

Thus we do not support, or promote, existing mods on our channels. People have created mods for The Long Dark, we don't stop them from doing that but we don't allow for them to be promoted here. Also another issue is the game is still under active development, and so we may update the game in some way that breaks existing mods without intending to. This has happened in the past.

So we understand that people are anxious to see mods, but we ask everyone to be patient with us while we work things out.

  3. If I'm not mistaken mod support hasn't been officially added even on PC so those mods are done from third party websites. Which comes with various risks (i.e viruses)

It should be possible like Bethesda and their game Skyrim did, right? 🤔

For Bethesda sure but hinterland is an indie game developer so adding mod support to the game is probably a bit of a challenge for them so I highly doubt we see mods anytime soon if ever. personally I hope they continue developing the game, yes mods would be sweet but I feel like they shouldn't waste time adding support for them until the game is finished after they finish the game then I'm all for it as mods adds infinite replayability after a game is no longer being developed.

(Fyi I'm on ps4 myself so I know the feeling of seeing a cool mod that you know you can't use)

Well, I got stuck while trying to shimmy down Timberwolf Mountain and of course the game auto saved since I sprained a limb while trying to free myself.

Not a very interesting way to go out if you ask me.

What is the benefit from auto saving on sprains?

If we remove auto saving on sprains then at least we can quit and revert to our last save instead of being stuck forever.

I wish auto saving on sprains would go away.

    Thank you

The long dark tries to punish you on your mistakes so it auto saves to prevent you from reverting back. Any injury will kick off an auto safe for that same exact reason to prevent reverting a save. Irl you can't do that and I believe the long dark tries to explain that as well as best it can. I highly doubt they remove that feature.

Without the need for iron arrow heads. Sharpened cured birch saplings. Less damage and break faster then regular arrows but negates the need for a forge before hunting is possible.

Agree but instead I believe it should just be stone arrows. Instead of just a sharpened stick so you'll need stones to craft stone arrow heads and a birch sapling and feathers.

...The third part of the puzzle I keep wondering about is the eternal winter (and a pretty cold one at that) - how is that coming into the picture?
(even in the tundra, far beyond the boreal forests you can 'easily' sunbathe in the summer months)

Yeah obviously the real life answer is that programming a seasonal system isn't easy especially with how the game is set up currently. However purely for fun I tried to speculate why there's an eternal winter once but unfortunately I haven't came up with anything that could possibly explain that part of the puzzle. My best guess currently is an ice age has occurred but the odds of an ice age occurring at the same time as a geomagnetic storm as well as a pole reversal are really low. The odds for a geomagnetic storm to occur alongside a pole reversal is low on their own but it could happen as it has a much higher chance especially considering that a geomagnetic storm could theoretically cause a pole reversal.

well thats were a new item comes in batterys they can be found around the world they are not rare but they are still hard to find they come singuler or ,in a package (a pack of batterys include 2 of them)when used one battery will recharge the entire flashlight

or another idea is to work grab a second and use it on a car battery recharge during an aroura and recahrge your flashlight with the battery

and level 1 skill is lowered to 5 percent

That would work if they added Batteries however you would still have to protect the battery some how or they'll will drain outside the Aurora. Either way I probably wouldn't use this as in my opinion the storm lantern provides better lighting than the flashlight as the storm lantern provides a nice area effect of light while the flashlight only provides a small cone of light  which looks dimmer in my opinion.

Sorry, my comment was more directed at the comment in the original thread that was merged with this one 😶

The creator was commenting on the fact that a storm like the aurora wouldn’t continue to reoccur as it does in the game. My response was simply as stated. They made it that way so the game worked 😋

    Oh sorry my mistake.

People do realize this is a game right?
Who’s to say this is even our earth? Maybe it’s an alternate dimension where the physics are completely different.

Thats right! You all have been playing a sci-fi survival game! Nice job Hinterlands... thought you pulled one over on us...

Yes it is a game but there's nothing wrong with a bit of fun speculation on the lore of the game and the causes of phenomenon within it. Humans are naturally curious so most people tend to speculate on a lot of things no matter how fruitless that speculation might be.

Well this is actually a really good point

but I always wondered this people can create small EMI wrappings for electronics it can be that you harvest the boxes EMI wrappings and surround your flashlight with it that can be smart well let me get this idea further:

there can be a science skill

this skill effects this item effectiveness

for an example science skill 1's wrappings will be quite shitty as the storm can still effect it with your flashlight's power downing 25 percent faster and stronger light option being disabled

level 5 skilled wrap is the best as it blocks the storms effects entirely and flashlight can use its strong power option

Science skill also effects the warppings removal condition

science skill 1 player will damage the wrapping while removing

science skill 5 player will protect its condition while removing

This may work better but there's still the issue on drain speed. as it is now the flashlight doesn't last long at all while on and without an Aurora you may get 1 nights use with it while protected and that's not even the whole night. After it's dead it is just a paperweight until the next Aurora. I love the idea of trying to make the flashlight more useful but unfortunately it just doesn't stay on long enough before needing a recharge to be worth carrying.

  11. The lore behind the long dark is the geomagnetic storm is not only disabling power but blocking it's production entirely.

Basically my reasoning is look at the flashlight(torch) if you let it charge during the Aurora why doesn't it keep that charge afterwards? Something is draining that charge so even if you protect the device from the effects I believe as soon as you remove it from this box it still wouldn't work as it would be drained immediately.

I don't think this would work or at least make sense with the behavior of the storm and Aurora.

    ...First up: the muzzleloader...

    Second: a single-barrel hunting shotgun...

I wouldn't mind a muzzleloader seems like it would be fun and as @s7mar7insaid it fits the long dark due to the economic crash of great bear now the shotgun seems a bit much in my mind a shotgun just doesn't fit well in the long dark.

On 3/13/2021 at 5:40 PM, Willy Pete said:

To give it a stand-out place among the other weapons, the muzzleloader would be loaded from the menu,

This however I don't agree with, having to open the menu everytime you need to reload would be annoying yes it could save some time and resources as hinterland wouldn't have to develop animations but still I wouldn't use it if I had to open the menu each time to reload as it massively breaks immersion.

However The idea is fun, I personally don't see neither of these getting added. hinterland has said before that they don't want the long dark to be a first person shooter so they don't want to add too many guns and I personally believe that hinterland won't add any more than what we already have as they are already a good complement. We have a rifle for hunting deer and bears, a sidearm for defense and a bow for a long term. If hinterland adds any more guns I would be surprised.

Requests like this and the co-op have been on the forum for years. A few months ago, I brought up something like this, and no one wants it. I'm sorry, that's true.

For multiplayer it isn't that we don't want it it is just that hinterland themselves said they won't be adding it as the long dark was designed to be a single player experience they did however say they would consider it for a future game. (See below quoted post) As for the addition of NPCs I mean it would be interesting but would also get rid of the isolated feeling of the long dark and that's one thing I really enjoy about the game. If they added npcs personally I would want them to limit it to custom mode where you have to toggle a setting called "random npc encounters"

    Moving to Wish List sub-forum.

Just as a note while we encourage you to talk about your desire to see co-op added to the game and your ideas for how it would best work it is not something currently planned for The Long Dark.

The Long Dark was designed from the beginning to be a single-player experience and we don't have any plans to add multiplayer. It doesn't quite fit with type of experience we are trying to build and yes, the technical challenges of trying to add multiplayer to the existing game would be pretty significant.

However we do understand many people are interested in a multiplayer experience, and don't fault anyone for finding the idea compelling (it IS fun to imagine). We've seen quite a few requests for it, and it might be something we consider for a future game -- but not this one.

The very easy mode in which you don't have to fight with Old Bear and Timberwolfs and any other animals (just the animations would be great). It's for people who are playing mostly for a good story and don't like to learn how to kill some virtual creatures.  I'm such a player and this is more frustrating than fun. I thought the Long Dark would be too difficult for me as I'm not an experienced player but the Episode 1 and the beginning of Episode 2 were great. Then it starts to get more frustrating than fun. I saw on Steam that only 10% of players got the badge for killing the Bear and I saw lots of comments on YouTube from people who got stucked on The Old Bear challenge so I think it's a good idea to make a very easy mode so that more players would buy and enjoy the game.

This seems like a waste of hinterland resources to add this in my opinion. If they added a mode that takes away all of what you mentioned then the game basically plays itself. Question the comments on YouTube that was saying they was stuck on the old bear how long ago was it? I remember struggling with the bear as well then later a patch dropped that made the bear charge less or something (been a while don't know exactly what it did other than it did nerf the bear) when I attempted after the patch I killed the bear fairly easily. I don't see hinterland adding this.

It's embarrassing to share this but

I never used emergency stims until recently 1) I got used to finding alternative routes/solutions than using a stim 2) I thought its description "you collapse from exhaustion" meant that after using it you'll physically pass out on the ground for an hour or so, which could be deadly if near a predator or out in the cold.

Another one, I assumed drinking herbal restored fatigue. So I would drink it before sleep assuming it replenished more fatigue :(:(

And rhar makes me wonder. What were some things that you were mistaken about?

I actually use stims just for sleeping, if I don't have anything to do other than waiting for the night to end I'll inject a stim to exhaust my character that way I can sleep and wake up fully rested in the morning instead of half way through the day if I just ran in circles waiting to get tired enough.

You can place 12 traps and get 5 rabbits overnight, so long as the traps are located in the rabbit grove.

Yeah this is probably my problem I have a bad habit of not wanting to carry and set up so many traps so I only placed 1 last time I used them and in hindsight it probably would be pretty slow with just 1 trap lol

  17. 15 hours ago, Serenity said:

You get a lot more with traps. You can easily have twice as many rabbits with traps than are actually running around in an area

Is that actually the case? I've used traps and they seems extremely slow in comparison to just stunning rabbits.

Yes, though you can trap rabbits for guts, which is infinite. To make snares to trap rabbits, you only need reclaimed wood and a gut. You get the wood back when harvesting a ruined trap

Don't even have to trap them it's easier to just stun them with a rock.

I get this feeling like TLD is nearing the end of its development.  Maybe there is still a bunch in the works yet to be released, but I suspect this is gonna be the last year we see any major adjustments(I could be wrong and a deeply hope that I am).

Yeah hopefully there is more planned. I feel like if they do stop development it will be after episode 5 of wintemute. Hopefully they'll continue updating the game but obviously eventually they will have to move on to another project.

  20. 1. This sounds interesting due to the increased challenge it would create but I wouldn't call the starvation tactic an exploit. irl in a survival situation you wouldn't try to stay full everyday you would ration your food this could mean going a day or 2 without food.

    2. This could be very interesting but I don't see how it would work, it would require a massive overhaul to the hunger system,  as well as a lot of changes to the ui. The biggest issue I see is if your character is full but lacking a few important nutrients, as the game is now you can't overeat. With this system you would occasionally have to overeat in order to not get penalized for a missing nutrient if you are already full. I could see something like this for TLD2 if one is made but not on the current game.

    3. All for this, A proper cooking system like this would add so much to the game. Also would love to see an addition to this a moral bar where if it gets to low your survivor could start hallucinating. Eating a prepared meal like soups or stews will increase moral.

    4. Don't see the major benefit of this as you can already get pretty good warmth bonuses as it is now. Neutral on this.

    5. Like this idea a lot especially if playing interloper where matches are generally hard to find.

    6. More craftables are always a plus if balanced properly.

    7. I like this though one change instead of getting rid of the ammo count entirely it would remain but instead just show a total amount of ammo and wouldn't show what's loaded. This way we wouldn't have to open the inventory everytime we want to see how much ammo is left and only click a button that will have the caracter check if loaded. Could be done by pressing the reload button once which will have the character visibly check and If you see it isn't fully loaded you could press the reload button again to get the character to reload, if it is loaded you just click back (circle on ps4 I'm unsure of PC assuming it's esc?)

    8. I have yet to use that bedroll thus can't comment on this.

    9. I play with sprains off due to how annoying they are and the fact that they cause my game to lock up for a few minutes. I don't believe this would be as annoying considering you have to fall in order to break a leg but it may still lock my game up like sprains do if so I would end up disabling it. I'm unsure of this one.

    10. Neutral to this. Would add personalization but overall it's not massively important.

    11. This sounds interesting but seems like a lot of work for hinterland to add can see why you mentioned DLC as I definitely don't see this being added to the base game. Unsure of this either way it sounds interesting but not hurting if it isn't added.

  21. 10 hours ago, Serenity said:

There is a ridiculous amount of them in the game. Some regions have between 100 and 200 alone. You can live for weeks just on cat tails. If you leave them for emergencies most of them never get eaten.

I do usually use them for emergencies they don't spoil so I don't like eating them unless absolutely necessary I also eat them if I'm just a few calories short for bed. Also I probably have something set to low because cattails are always a bit rare for me.
