Wolverines and Avalanches

Wolverines are iconic creatures of the Canadian North. They live up in the high country, often feeding upon other animals killed in avalanches. They will take on anything and can take down a grizzly or a moose and will eat almost anything.

They are incredibly reclusive. In game, their behavior could become even more aggressive than in nature so surviving a wolverine encounter would be similar to a bear encounter but with a more appropriate animation sequence for a smaller animal and in keeping with its style of attack. Their interactions with the other creatures would be interesting since they could kill and eat any of them. On the other hand, their behavior with their mates and offspring would be fascinating to observe, perhaps from the safety of a crafted blind.

Wolverines would only be found in the highest regions of the maps especially around Timberwolf Mountain. In keeping with the habitat of wolverines, a new risk could be added to the game: Avalanche!

Here is a fascinating documentary on wolverines:

Avalanche slopes

There are plenty of slopes that are the correct steepness but they would need to be added to the maps somehow in order to activate the avalanche process. I would envision that they would have an invisible region where they start, where they progress to and where they end. If caught in an avalanche, the player could be buried or partly buried. If buried, it could be a long cold torturous agonizing death as you slowly freeze or die of thirst. Broken limbs would be suffered along with bruising and other injuries. Perhaps a wolverine would come along and attempt to dig the player out and gnaw on him/her a bit just to add insult to injury. There might be some possibility of recovery or it could simply be another horrible way to die in The Long Dark.

Wolverines have a very distinctive loping gate while running. They would make a gorgeous addition to the game I think.
