Are scrap metal and fir logs obsolete for repair?

I have found whetstones and been using them to sharpen my hatchet/knife blades. But now, what is the role of scrape metal and fir logs in the repair process? Are they obsolete?

scrap is still needed to repair hacksaws, lanterns, and other metal items as well as bieng required for arrowheads and improvised tools. i havent checked yet, but i believe fir is still needed to repair the hammer. i would imagine that as the game grows, more tools will be added that will require scrap, fir, and tools to repair.
