if you unlock a feat mid game would you be able to equip it or have to start a new save to use it?

My understanding is you need to start a new save as there is no option for equipping/swapping a feat once the game has started.

I think they become active in the game you unlock it in though. but you cannot change them after the game is started. So I mean if you are part way into a save and in that game you unlock one for snowwalker or similar, it is good in that game too. but I am not a dev so I reserve the right to be wrong.
