Placing objects

I always see screenshots of other players places with food and other stuff sorted and neatly placed on desks and whatnot. How do you do that? is it only a PC thing?

On Xbox One (or using the Xbox One controller on a PC) just highlight an item and select with LT, then place where you want with RT.

Doesnt seem to be working..

Yes, the item has to be somewhere "in-the-world" first. Dropped, on a shelf, ect.
