  1. Xbox Series X player here. I've just bought and downloaded the DLC, and...I cannot for the life of me figure out how to access it. I've been over everything, tripled checked that everything is properly downloaded, and I can't find the Far Territories or the Tales. I thought maybe I could access it via a new game in Survival, but the map only shows all the original regions. If there's some way to switch over to the new map with Forsaken Airfield and the others, I don't know how to do it.

    It's probably something really obvious, but if anyone would be willing to help point out what I'm missing, I'd appreciate it.

    Yeah definitely. As it continues it just becomes "OMFG I'm so sick of this story I'd rather die than keep writing it and I just start a new project?". The Hedonic Treadmill of being a writer.

    Maybe yeah.

    Although I've gotten so terrible about being able to do anything short. Every project I begin balloons into a 150,000+ nightmare that takes a year of work to finish if I'm lucky.

    Unfortunately I feel too guilty to do this. I feel like even if one person comes across it and gets invested, then I'll feel like crap if I decide to discontinue it and they're basically stuck with not getting to finish reading the story forever.

  5. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that. I have to admit that my feelings did change somewhat when they introduced the Darkwalker. The idea is definitely something to consider, although I didn't even get to the point of mentioning that this is all largely academic because I'm so busy with other writing projects, it feels irresponsible to start up something new at this point. But I don't know, maybe I might be tempted enough to just start writing something more low-key and simple and posting it here, though I'm not sure how active these message boards are. Would people see it?

    As for my profile banner, I genuinely can no longer remember if I actually took the picture, or I found it somewhere online.

    Thanks! I'd definitely say 'a doomed atmosphere', hell with rules, an doomed sounds stupid.

    I've had the inclination to write something related to The Long Dark ever since I picked it up in late 2017 and fell in love with it. The thing is, I'm a horror kind of guy. As in, 'scary monster stalking you' kind of horror. Which I feel is antithetical to the base experience of The Long Dark. The game largely seems to be almost a meditation on existential horror of entropy and slow, irreversible decay that is 'the long dark' of the universe grinding away without care or compassion, because it is literally incapable of either, as well as what it means to be a sentient human grappling with such an existence while simultaneously dealing with such mundane but absolutely necessary tasks as drinking water, eating food, and finding shelter.

    And it just feels kind of downright disrespectful to write a story in that setting that boils down 'OMFG there's a scary monster trying to kill us shoot it and run!'.

    It's probably already been considered, but would it ease the burden if it was reduced to a monthly session? Maybe just have one day or even half a day set aside out of every month for this more direct method of interaction with the community?

  8. I gather songs (particularly ambient songs) to help with my writing, and The Long Dark OST has provided some good material.

    I particularly like Desolation, Trepidation, Discordance, Firmament, and especially Terminal. Terminal sounds so intense.

    The new one from Ash Canyon is up there for me. I wish we had a way of downloading it. Honestly I'd buy it if it was available on Amazon or Bandcamp.

    My wife and I played Oblivion for like two years, literally HUNDREDS of hours, before ever realizing you could actually pick stuff up in-world.

    Perhaps it's because most people already have a PC and it's easily purchasble through Steam online. So, just download and play (and even better if you're on laptop, very portable). Here's a funny thing though, even though I'm a PC player I have this weird preference for using a controller for certain games. So really I'm just like you asking something like "what's the button for that in my X controller?" 😆

    Ha ha, yeah. Although, except for the portable part, it's just as easy to download through Xbox Live. That's how I initially got it, as a digital download.

    What is 'right click' in the context of an Xbox One controller?

    Also, and this isn't like a shot or anything, but I'm honestly curious why so many people default to PC when describing a PC/console game. Like, I see it EVERYWHERE, and the response is often, "I'm actually playing it on console, how does that translate?"

I acknowledge that probably most people would consider this less of a priority, because it's (unless I am missing something) almost exclusively for immersion over anything else, but I would love the ability to place any object in my inventory the same way you can place food items or the storm lantern. I was setting up shop in the main office on Mystery Lake and found myself wanting to set a toolkit down on a table, instead of just dropping it on the floor or storing it in a drawer somewhere. I think being able to place everything would be awesome.

  14. I'm sure this has to have been brought up before, but does anyone else think that The Grey is basically the TLD movie? I love the movie so much. (Although the book is not good.)

  15. Although I originally received The Long Dark as a gift in the form of a digital download from my wife in December 2017, I finally decided I wanted to show some more support to the studio, and also own it in real life, so I purchased a brand new physical copy.

    And I wanted to give some props to Hinterland for putting this with the game.

    Also, for a download of the soundtrack. (Although, I have to admit I was a little disappointed when I opened the booklet up and saw that it wasn't an instruction manual, it was literally just an empty journal. Don't get me wrong, that's still cool, I just...dammit, I want instruction manuals again, you know?! They used to be so awesome, and I'm so sick of lazy, money obsessed publishers ((not devs, publishers, I *do* understand the distinction)), sticking in two page long slips covering like the controls and the legalese info. WTF happened to ACTUAL instruction manuals?)

    Anyway, I'm glad to finally own it physically and I'm looking forward to Episode Three.

  16. This is coming from someone who plays The Long Dark, exclusively, on the Xbox One.

    At some point, I would really like to complete Faithful Cartographer and Exploration Game. I think some kind of tracking system wouldn't be unreasonable. Even something as simple as giving you a basic number to work with, like '0/18', for each region. It doesn't even have to be a checklist, just a tracker, so that I know whether or not I've completed a region and can move on. I think this would make a *LOT* of people happy, or at least some people *VERY* happy, given the fact that I have run into many OCD gamers out there who lose their minds a little over stuff like this. I know what it feels like.

    Just a thought.

  18. So I finally managed to confirm that the transponder parts are indeed in the mission critical inventory, along with keys and documents. Also the bear spear.

    On an unrelated note, I don't seem to be getting notifications anymore on this site whenever someone responds on a topic, and I did in the beginning. Does anyone know anything about that?

    Oh, I guess I missed the message, although usually they're pretty obvious. Also, I can't find it anywhere in my inventory. Which section of inventory is it listed in?

  20. This is probably a stupid question.

    So I'm finally getting around to playing Episode Two Redux, and I've gotten to the point where I'm at the first shortwave tower. I found the metal box you can interact with attached to the tower, and I go to open it, it opens, and...nothing happens. The only other thing I can do is close it. There's no option to extract or harvest or whatever the transponder parts. Is it a glitch or am I supposed to have like a toolbox with me or something else entirely? I've got to admit, I'm completely stumped.
