I mean, honestly it seems like that's just a matter of player choice. We can spend hundreds of days in any difficulty and not make much progress on any skill if we don't want to.
If we don't like the idea of being able to eat ruined meat or food... we can just choose not to (or put ruined items in a container to despawn). After all, just because something is there doesn't mean we have to make use of it.
Player choice is wonderful because we can change the game ourselves simply by changing the way we play it.
No disrespect, but this would add more player choice to the custom settings. There is always the option to mentally set our own limitations, but it could be argued that everyone could do this and we wouldn't need any custom settings. I'm not suggesting changes to the game itself, just more options in the custom settings. More choices for everyone 🤩

And please consider adding a toggle for skill-ups to custom game settings also. This would allow the option for those who like it more difficult to play the whole game without gaining the ability to eat all the rotten food late game. Perhaps even toggles for each skill?

You know… feral hogs are a problem in the US and Canada, that could be a VERY welcome addition
I would be more afraid of wild pigs than wolves and bears combined! Have you seen them? They are scary! And they like to rip out the arteries on the insides of your legs, which as it turns out is quite deadly! Oh and can you imagine Aurora pigs! If you can't drop them on the spot, they will kill you for sure!

I think it would be awesome to have the option in a custom game to be able to add the variant items only without the other generic tools and weapons. Pretty please?

Puuleeese add a toggle to custom settings for item variants independent from guns and tools! Woohoo! Tip-ups! Yay! Tip-up Town here we come!

Thank you for all of the kind messages in this thread, and for your continued support of THE LONG DARK. We will make sure to share new information as it becomes available, and we will keep working to provide the best possible game experience.
I can't speak for everyone, but myself certainly. I much prefer QUALITY over quantity (or release dates). So many games now seem to release in terrible states of unfinishedness. I have been with the game for a long time now, and I can relate to your frustration, if not understand it. But I would much rather have the game be completed over a longer period of time than haphazardly "finished" out of frustration leaving a buggy mess for us players in the end. I have already purchased the expansion and would like to know if there is a way to pay more as I feel like I have underpaid for the game as it stands. Do you have a means for us to donate or tip you for your work? Perhaps a Paypal link or should I just buy on more than one platform? Thank you so much for your continued work on this project! Please keep up the good work!

I, literally, just signed up for the forums to request this mechanic. I know this thread is a bit old, but it could use a revival.
If you check out the Roadmap page http://www.thelongdark.com/expansion/#roadmap one of the things listed is:
QuoteSAFEHOUSE CUSTOMIZATION
Survive in relative comfort through a series of features and items that allow you to organize, optimize, and decorate your favourite interiors.

Not a bad idea… it might be fun to have an even more urban region than Milton.
A more urban region, or maybe these could be sprinkled out in different locations, perhaps, so it doesn't get too urban. It just seems a bit weird there are so many things on Great Bear with no obvious places to get them. I suppose it could all be hand-waved away that it all got shipped from the mainland, but to where? Don't mind me, chronic overthinker here, lol 😊

oh, and there are boats all over the place, so:
- a combination boat marina/fishing/hunting supply

I've often wondered about the hotel/B & B and police station.
And there's no doctors or vets clinics either.
I just realized in addition to;
- a bed and breakfast
- medical/veterinary clinic
As you mentioned in your post, there is no pharmacy. So perhaps a combination medical clinic/veterinarian/pharmacy?
- medical/veterinary clinic/pharmacy

some of these could be as "simple" as adding signs to existing buildings or reusing existing assets elsewhere in the world.
- pizza place/deli
- movie/video game rental store
- dollar store
- arcade
The movie rental and arcade are outdated in the here and now, but Great Bear seems kinda stuck in the past, so they could be fitting.
- Fire department
- court house/local jail
- bowling alley
Maybe the bowling alley could also be the arcade and movie rental all in one?
- outdoor hockey rink

They aren't currently available, and we've been working on re-opening our Merch Store (though merch isn't currently available). We hope to have more information on this in the near future.
Please take my money! lol 😁

These could be added to the already established maps, or to the new areas yet to be released, whichever is easier. These certainly would not all necessarily need to be enterable, but it would be nice to be able to see them so they round out the community.
- A combination restaurant/bar
- A small grocery store
- A small hardware store
- Bait and tackle/hunting supply shop
- Used car/truck dealership/junkyard
- Hotel/Motel for tourists
- Island tours/travel agent
- Police/DNR station
- Porta Potty/septic sucking service
I am just trying to suggest things that would make Great Bear a little more complete as a community. Please feel free to add to this list below. Please try to keep it realistic for a small island community.

Not sure about in the game, but irl, acorn coffee has zero caffeine so all it would do is add hydration and calories. It shouldn't really give a fatigue boost. But according to the wiki: Drinking a Cup of Acorn Coffee will help to reduce fatigue usage. "Fatigue reduced" lasts 30 minutes and while in effect, the player's fatigue is immediately restored by 5%, and the fatigue loss rate is reduced by 25%. Sprinting will also use 25% less energy. Fatigue Reduced does not affect the fatigue loss rate when climbing ropes.

That is cool. Still curious if anyone tried my original question though. I am not patient enough to try myself, lol. So... Has anyone tried to initiate "Signal Void" from within "As The Dead Sleep"? Just curious if it is possible.

to see if they could initiate "Signal Void" from within "As The Dead Sleep"? Maybe this is a possible way to have access to bunkers and new features in interloper difficulty? Just curious if anyone has tried this?

They're always good for hurting yourself with accidentally 😁. Well they are with me anyway.
Good suggestion! As an added bonus, every time you use it there is a chance of damage to your health!

A setting in custom game mode to toggle bodies on or off would be an interesting feature.

A spade or shovel would not be very effective in frozen ground, especially as deeply frozen as eternal winter would be.
-
Perhaps after crafting all the things (clothes, tools) or maxing all the skills, we could unlock the option to use the Feat slots to enable variant guns and variant tools (hopefully tools are in the plans) to interloper difficulty for those who would like to have this as an option. This way people could have a sanctioned way (by Hinterland) to play gunloper with the new item variants, and still work toward feats and achievements. This would also allow for those who have no interest in changing interloper to keep it the same as it is now by default.
