  1. I'm sure that my problem of no aurora was a bug, but as mine was a game started in 2018 there were many anomalies and it thought it not worth mentioning to HTL.  I played another old Stalker game and had no problem with auroras.   As others are having a similar problem perhaps it is still a current bug.I must admit that I can't be bothered to try and explain the problem to HTL.

  2. Once again I have given up after about half an hour of repeatedly trying.

I tried once again on the snow slope but I seemed to be making little progress.  It was difficult to judge progress as there are few features on the snow slope and it I could not be sure that I was looking perfectly horizontally which was necessary to compare my progress against small features on the slope.

I decided to try the same procedure on the rock wall on the right side of the snow slope.  This time I definitely seemed to make some progress, but very, very slowly, and at times I seemed to be making no progress whatsoever.

I think that the problem is that that when I tried to place the red cache beneathe me there were many positions that could be thought of as beneath me.  Deciding which position seemed to be critical.  Some times I even seemed to lose height.

Alternatively, do it like I did in the Wolf Plateau video. Face the slope, look down, and hold W so that you are moving towards the slope. Select the cache and have it "placed" underneath you. Cancel, while still holding W. This will lift you upwards. Using this technique, I was able to climb up there in less than 60 seconds.

That is what I was doing, more or less, but placing the cache beneath me was a bit varied. I could not be sure exactly where is was being placed.

    I shall try again.

  4. I have spent almost an hour trying to get up the ice slope to Wolf Plataeu, and made very little progress.

I was using the stone-cache technique, but I suspect using it very badlyTo judge my progress I dropped a stick on the slope as a markler.  A few times I seemed to make a little headway, but at other times seemed to be be making no progress.  I suspect that progress up the slope is much slower than I expected, and I feel that I probably wasn't being careful enough, although I was trying to be careful, with my alignment up the slope.  I wasn't sure where I should be looking when I cancelled the stone-cache. I also wasn't clear whether I should be using "W", (I'm using a PC),  to move forward when I cancelled.

It was a frustrating and irritating experience.  All I hope to get from getting up there is a good charcoal survey to remove a black patch on my map.  Clearly we are not meant to go up there so I can't blame HTL.  I haven't given up yet, I'll probably try again, don't know why.  I must be stupid 😬

I'm impressed with anyone who has the patience to get this feat. It's such a massive undertaking.

A few days ago I completed Faithfull Cartographer for the ninth time, it might have even been the tenth.  It was an old Stalker game that I started in 2018. I gave up years ago once I passed 1100 days. Then I rediscovered the save and decided to update it.  Because it was an old game, before the revolver and a few of the regions there are several anomalies.  I started to map Blackrock  but the Timberwolves were such a hassle I didn't fully map it.  Then after five Timberwolf attacks, one after the other, I thought, ''This is no fun', and left the region.  Fortunately Blackrock locations don't count towards FC.  In that game I found 333 locations with several locations still to visit in Blackrock. That game is up to 1200 days, and I think that is enough.

In at least one other game I found 344 locations.  I don't know what the total number is.

  6. After giving up with the game with no auroras I played another old Stalker game.  I had no problems with that.  After about three nights I had an aurora at the Blackrock prison. Previously I had no aurora after more than 20 nights.

Playing a Stalker game in Blackrock was no fun. On entering the Blackrock region from PV I had five timberwolf attacks in quick succession, probab;y around one minute after repelling one attck another started.  I think that is poor game design.

Attitudes have changed quite a lot these days, vegans are increasing, more food allergies  etc... So its more of a moral dilemma than it used to be.

I suspect that for a starving man out in the wilds attitudes and the moral dilemma have not changed.

  8. When Sir John Franklin was exploring Canada around 1820s not only did the men eat their boots, but one person murdered another and ate him.  On Franklin's last expedition looking for the North West Passage, when everyone died, there was evidence of cannibalism on the bones that were found many, many years later.

I am sure when one is starving a can of dog food would be very welcome.

Restaurants could charge premium prices for meals of moose, bear and wolf.

Unfortunately, it's not a bug. Surveyed locations menu only shows you the locations that are necessary for Faithful Cartographer, and Hinterland decided not to make getting this achievement even more difficult.

Were we ever told that ,

"Hinterland decided not to make getting this achievement even more difficult." ?

Acually I am pleased that I don't have to face those Blackrock Timberwolves again.  Yesterday I finished Faithful Cartographer for thr "n"th time and I did not want to return to Blackrock.

  10. I continued the game without making any ammo. until I fulfilled the Cartographic Challenge criteria, surveying 212 particular locations.  I did not see any auroras as I travelled around all the regions.  I actually visited 324 locations in this game which is below 344 of another game or two I've played. The Blackrock region did not appear at in the Journal/ Collections/ Surveyed Locations., so there are still a few bugs to sort out.

Normally I like to remove all of the black areas from the charcoal maps, but this time I couldn't be  bothered.  I have completed the Cartographic Challenge nine or ten times, so by now I am fairly familiar with the geography of Great Bear.  Once you know the layout of the land, the game becomes very tame compared to the suspense and excitment or your virgin games.  BTW, I do not use spoiler websites or the Whiteberry, or similar, maps wbich I think are very good.

I hate to admit it, but I found this game a tedious slog.  That is not a critcism of the game, I still think it is the greatest game I have played, but I have played it for a great many hours.  I'll not say how manyhours I have played as most people will not believe me.

Now I am waiting for the last episode. I dislike being negative, but there are so many loose ends to tie up which might interesting from the story point of view, I think the game play might be disappointing.

What does interest me, is what will Raph and HTL produce next?

  11. I decided to continue my game without getting access to the cannery workshop to make revolver ammo.

Considering it is a Stalker game with reduced number of wolves it is surprisingly easy, too easy. I have had hardly any bad weather.

I started the game a long time ago, before the revolver was added, and before I knew that maps could be made using charcoal.  This means I  have a lot of map-making to do.

@peteloud, I seem to recall you are opposed to mods?  Anyways, there is a mod that enables the dev console, which you can use to activate an aurora.  Just an option.  Hate to see people give up the game (even for a time) because of an issue such as this.

It is better the HTL fix such issues than me continue the game with the help of a mod.  After a while when I am desperately bored I might get back to TLD and use the mod you suggest, thanks.

  13. I got to the cannery in BI and have been waiting ten days for an aurora.  Nine of those night were spent at the door of cannery workshop waiting for the aurora that hasn't come.

I now must conclude that there is a bug preventing the aurora.

I think I will give up with TLD until Episode 5 comes out.  Does anyone know when that might be?

  14. There are a few more issues that I am not happy with too.

First is that I have discovered 275 locations but when I look at the surveyed locations it seems a low at only 88.

Not only that Blackrock is missing from the list of Surveyed Locations

I am puzzled why Hushed River Valley is Undiscovered in red.  I thought that I had been there, although I could be wrong about that.  That ia why I want to make some revolver ammo. and go to HRV, to check it out.

I assume that the problems is to do with my having started this game years ago and that the data format and processing for locations has changed.

I shall have one more night in Blackrock to see if there is an aurora.  If not I shall try getting out of Blackrock without being eaten by timberwolves. Once out I probably have stocks of arrows and ammo. spread around.

    . . . . . . . . . .

I managed to get out of Blackrock without any attack from Timberwolves, so now it is easy once again.  Perhaps I'll go down to the Cannery in BI and wait for an aurora there.  I would feel much safer with some revolver ammo. for defence.

  15. I have now passed 20 days waiting for an aurora and it hasn't happened.  I am about to give up.

While waiting for this I have been sleeping or passing time in the pickup truck near the workshop with the keypad and sleeping in short sessions so I think it unlikely that I have missed an aurora.

I have sufficient stocks of food and wood so that I do not have to leave the area so the game has just become endless sleep - pass time - eat/cook - sleep - pass time.

I have better things to do than play a game like has become that monotonous.

  16. Leeanda,

It's no good moving away from the prison, I need to be there to open the door when there is an aurora.

    turtle777,

If you have had to wait 30 days then my waiting 16 days, without an aurora if perhaps not as irregular as I suspected.

I have no revolver ammo. and few arrows so I am reluctant to move away until I can restock my ammo.  Thanks for your info.

  17. I have been waiting in Blackrock prison for an aurora to let me unlock the door to the workshop for 16 nights, and still have not had an aurora.   I have a ton of stuff for making ammunition, 855755791_screen_(-11322763)_653d2fda-8675-43d8-80ae-822aa2ca5e8b.thumb.png.be16d8736c92a26211c1ff5b42bbbd1f.pngand the code, but I can't get in.

Is this just bad luck with the random generator or is there a bug?  Should I give up?

This is a game I started years ago, before Ash Canyon, played to over 500 days then lost interest for years.  I returned to it few days ago.  It is Stalker with one level less wolves, (perhaps all animals).  There seems to be a few anomalies with the locations in the Journal too.
