I am glad the harvesting of fresh material with bare hands is back in update 2.27, very welcome in Interloper! It supposedly produces less food (not by much on rabbits though) but that's ok.

There are a few mods around and a big one coming soon I think, but they are made by developers working on their own with their own findings and risking to have their mods breaking at the next TLD update. I would appreciate if the TLD team could provide an update to what they are planning in terms of modding for the community for example in the next dev log. It would be awesome to get some official guidance/API/tool etc. so more people can develop mods at some point in time.

That threw me off a bit at first but it keeps me moving and eating cat tails til I find the hacksaw and/or hammer. One other difference I noticed is the amount of matches in new random places. Lots and lots of matches. I think once you've put a lot of hours into interloper, it doesn't really matter what changes the devs make, you'll find a way to survive. Thanks for shaking things up and keeping the game interesting!
Yes I got much better at Interloper lately, after many attempts. What helps a lot is knowing the maps and where the interesting stuffs are.

@Mistral had a nice proposal to make carcass harvesting more in line with current mechanics and realism, it is to enable fresh carcass harvesting with bare hands (fully, no tool required) starting from level 3 harvesting skill. I'd second this, probably the option that makes the most sense imo.

Furthermore, what would have made actual sense was if they enabled carcass harvesting by hand if you reached level 3 of harvesting skill, to bring it in line with fire starting = no tinder for Fire skill level 3
That would be pretty cool actually, and not to many changes to current mechanics.

You would also need to consider the boiling of the water to kill bacteria.
The water melted this way would be unsafe as is the water which has been put onto a fire but not to a boiling point. We can drink it but with risk of affliction, or we can boil it or use purification tablets.

As to snow causing hypothermia....if you're not doing anything and already freezing then sure. If you're pulling around 50kg of gear then eat all the snow you want.
For bacteria in the snow, they tend to cause problems when the temperature is hovering around zero so that water is liquid and bacteria can do their thing. From personal experience and the experience of at least a couple dozen people, I think you're going to be perfectly fine eating freshly fallen snow in -20 degrees
Houses are often > 0°C inside. About your remark on bacteria, it may make sense but I suppose they will not want to change the current mechanic. What I am proposing are additions which are not breaking current mechanics.

I'd have the following suggestions:
Harvesting
In recent update harvesting a fresh carcass with bare hands has been disabled. It requires a sharp tool to cut open first then may be harvested with bare hands. I think the change is a bit too drastic, making it impossible to cut open without a sharp tool is not realistic. With some patience, one may be able to cut open with a stick or stone provided the carcass is not frozen. I would suggest the following changes:
- Add the notion of "cut open" when harvesting a fresh carcass. If no sharp tool, would be possible with a stick, stone, scrap metal and would require several attempts to succeed (this may also be a skill we may improve over time) provided the carcass is not frozen.
- The more advanced the state of mouldiness would be, the easier the carcass would be to harvest with non sharp tool.
Water handling
I've always found weird we could die of dehydration in TLD where we are constantly surrounded by snow. I know "eating snow" could lead to hypothermia and so it is prevented which makes sense, but what about gathering snow into a container and placing it some time into a building where temperature is above 0°C? Water may be fresh and lower our body temperature a bit, but at least we would not dehydrate.

I like the change in harvesting - its more "realistic" now
I am not sure about that. Making it harder to harvest fresh carcass without sharp tool makes sense but making it impossible doesn't imo. I would have preferred a modification where there are attempts to cut open with a stick or a stone (some may be sharp). These attempts would fail often or take time but after a while could succeed.
I made a post about this improvement here:

There are no tools to be found on interloper what so ever. Only craft.
I wouldnt spend more than a day in Ash canyon if i spawned there. I would go TWM -=> PV -=> CH and then if i have hammer and hacksaw -=> DP if not -=> ML if still not -=> Milton if somehow still not -=> HRV (guaranteed hammer) then back to FM to forge. The whole point in early loper is to run thru regions fast and loot loot loot.
Also after i craft bow and tools i immediately go to AC for backpack and get back via summit in TWM.
Thanks for the tips, I will try that

The change is not dramatic but makes the first steps in Interloper a little more difficult. For example I started in Ash Canyon, managed to survive a few days but still haven't found any tool nor bedroll. Hopefully there are plenty of Cattails stalks there, but all the rabbits I catch I cannot use, unlike earlier. No big deal, but I thought Interloper was hard enough as it was (I am talking about the first days mainly).

Now we cannot harvest carcasses with bare hands anymore (unless they are found, but not those we kill ourselves), this creates a increased difficulty in Interloper mode, where we don't start with a knife or hatchet. Has this been taken into account by the design team? Interloper has just gotten more difficult with the recent updates.

If anyone knows of any maps of new item spawns that aren't in a youtube video, I'd love to know!
There is a download link in the comments of the video with a zip containing the maps shown into the video.

Thanks all! The video is going to be useful indeed

Well too late...! Loper is really a game of luck.
-
So the locations have changed are there still guarantied spawn locations? Basically in Interloper knowing them is the only way to survive the first day(s) or being very lucky.

Hi, I am playing an Interloper game starting in Pleasant Valley with latest version and there are no matches in the farm's basement as they used to spawn. Anyone noticed this? I think I will die in this game as I didn't find any matches in the main buildings so far.
-
OK thanks, I missed this in the release notes.

Hi, it seems since the Buried Echo update, I cannot seem to be able to harvest carcasses with bare hands anymore. I am in Stalker mode, and have knife and hatchet, but I want to use bare hands when possible. Even when wolf has just been killed (so is not frozen), there is no option to harvest with bare hands.

Woaw this update is HUGE! It looks fantastic, thanks for this amazing update to close the year!

Thank you Hinterland to continue making awesome updates to this game after so much time. It deserves it, this is one of those game we can play "indefinitely". This last update seems to have many interesting and well thought goodies into it. Regarding the contaminated zone, even though I can understand the concerns of some, we cannot judge before playing it. And it's just one area so those who may not like it can just avoid it. I think this is generally good to experiment with new ideas and the independent areas make this possible without affecting the whole gameplay, so please keep on trying and experimenting!

Ok, I hope this is not aluminum! Would be nice to have this info on the store.

Which metal are the mugs made of? Unless I am mistaken, this is is not specified in the store.

Hinterland, please let us know if you're going to resupply the store, most of it is sold out after less than 24h. I woke up in EU timezone and didn't have a chance to get there at opening.
Maybe you could setup preorder and then order from suppliers once you know exactly how much to order and keep little stock. This way ordering will take longer to receive for customers but everyone will be happy and have their goods in the end, not only those who are in the right timezone or wake up early.

Thanks for the update! This one should be called "the punishment"!
