Challenge Mode On PS4...Unclear on there being no map and need help

I just started challenge mode on PS4 and the challenge I'm on shows the overall huge map of TheLongDark, but it doesn't indicate with the indicator where I'm at.  Is this the way it's supposed to be?  Am I supposed to find maps?  Just wondering because I don't know TheLongDark well enough to know where I'm actually going.

Try to use a charcoal outdoors for sketching. It should to show your location on the area.

I'm a PC player, and have no idea of differences to Console, but i guess it's a general feature.
