Killing wolves

When confronted by a wolf I get  options to chose a weapon. How do I choose one as when I click on one nothing happens and I end up just fighting with hand.

The boxes have a with highlight around them, you have to be super quick. I find it defalts to the hatchet if you have one. You tend to still end up looking like your using your hands but the bar will fill quiker and the wolf will bleed when it runs off.. you can follow the blood to find the wolf and harvest it.
