Flare Gun / Pistol Case

I can grab the gun and shells out of the nice case but why can't we replace them back into it? maybe I wish to leave some for next time I visit this location.

I quickly learned that one should never drop flare shells. I would guess the best alternative is to put them in the metal container. It would be excellent if you could place items without having to drop them first. My experience is that most games won't let you place items like this, do you know one that does? Using the developer console in the Fallout series is one of the few I can think of.
