  1. Really excited about this update. Cheat Death perhaps will make me stop backupping saves. I don't like my single player games 'telling' me how to play them, but nowadays it's very rare to even use such backups, and being able to keep going (and making interesting choices about it) sounds great.

But sure the best part of the news is simply the new map, to have again one of the best gaming experiences ever: starting a new run in an unknown map. If you keep just releasing new paid maps every few months, you'll have at least one loyal customer.

I would like to share my thoughts about new regions.
I just visited the Forsaken Airfield area in the new dlc. I also watched the reviews of the new map. The 2 new maps offer nothing for long runners. I can't believe I went through that long and arduous road to loot spoiled food, a rifle holster, and a bomber jacket I'll never use. I don't think I'll go to the airport again. I will probably feel the same in the contaminated area.
I think there are layers of difficulty in these areas, but there are no reasons for us to revisit the area again and again.
Such as Bleak Inlet, Blackrock, Forlorn Muskeg, Desolation Point.
For example, the Forsaken airfield could have had a lathe that could make arrows that were more effective, lethal, and had high long-range accuracy. Maybe it could house a meat drying oven. So the player might want to visit this place several times during his long run. Perhaps a strong spring similar to a sports bow could be produced.
After my visit to Forsaken airfield, it seems pointless to revisit these areas. When you add to this the long and meaningless road you have to travel to reach these areas, it becomes clear that the maps are disposable.
A few words need to be said about Travois. This tool, which makes life easier, has a very wide rotation angle, like heavy-duty trucks. I think this is not normal. It is necessary to be able to turn such a vehicle in any direction easily, but more importantly, I felt like I was using "horse glasses" while using this vehicle. It is not possible to look left, right or back. However, we should be able to easily look in the direction we want by using the right mouse button. I haven't seen any such option or key assignment.
To summarize briefly, TLD for me; It was an attractive game because it did not involve supernatural powers and tested the player with completely natural challenges. It still is. However, the new DLC does not offer a reasonable reason to use the new maps again. And I feel sorry for the time and effort spent on these maps.
    These are my personal thoughts.
Unfortunately, I don't know English so I used Google Translator. I don't know if the translation accurately reflects my thoughts. I hope it doesn't cause any confusion.

Perhaps you just reached "endgame"? If they always release new content balanced for hundred-days runs, they'd alienate a lot more players. How about just starting a new game? These regions are challenging even for the more experienced players, and extremely fun to begin a run there. But I like the beggining much more than late game, so I'm also biased here...

  3. I'm playing on the new map and, boy, it is amazing! Still don't know why we cannot simply choose the new map from start, but after a (literal) 10-minute run of Pilgrim I arrived there, and then I started a fresh Custom Game.

I started far away from the "good stuff" (let's say I found Forsaken Airfield quite fast) and found a mine entrance before any actual building. And oh boy, having to explore and survive in those undergrounds at the beggining of the game was an awesome experience, very different from any other run I made.

Now I'm more or less established, but still exploring the map. I liked the meatless wolves, it's quite a twist. The chemical poisoning is a nice element, but I'm still not sure how the area effect works (it's more about sound than image, it seems, but it's odd). There are a few minor quirks, such as the useless hat, but nothing from the known bug list.

Thanks Hinterland for this excellent update!

I'm constantly getting spawns to FA in Custom? In fact, more than any other region I'd say.

The one that is actually criminally still neglegted in starts is Bleak Inlet.

Did you notice if every time you spawned at exactly the same point (entrance of the map, from the transition areas)?

At least when you choose the map at the beginning  the run, the spawn is always there.

  5. Are we going to be able to start a new game directly in the new map? Some of my best gaming experiences were being thrown in an unknown TLD map (so much that I basically started a new game in every possible map before travelling around too much, and even waited patiently to experience Blackrock in survival before playing Chapter 4).

Also, please make this possible for custom games. I'm quite disappointed that still isn't possible to have a random start in Forskaken Airfield.

    The update looks amazing, anyway.

  6. I'm pretty fine at the Hangar. That is, after I managed to not freeze inside of it (custom game with mostly Interloper settings). Contrary to what people say, there is actually good hunting (rabbits on the track, deer nearby in the back) and it's easy to get to Drifter's Island avoiding the predators. But I agree that it's a bit boring to keep walking from the storage to the bed to the door outside where you can make your fires, and learning how to reach the underground workbench without light was a PitA (thank gods I found a lantern). If safehouse customization would be only what the Movable Containers mod does, I'd be happy already.

But yeah, Midnful Cabin is the nicest spot of the map. I just with I had more reasons to stay around there.

  7. Really looking forward to the next regions. Starting a new run in a completely unknown region is one of the best gaming experiences I ever had. Too bad I didn't realize that you could start new games in Far Territory as soon as you discover it. Exploring Forsaken Airfield with an established character was waaay less cool.

But surviving in it with Interloper settings is being really nice, too.

Hopefully the new regions will be acessible as soon as they are realesed. Otherwise I will just make a Pilgrim start running to there the faster possible! :D

    On Interloper ?
I watched multiple interloper runs and did a few myself. Tools were very scarce.
Never seen anyone find a hammer on Loper in FA. In general, that would be in line with the past, where you would never find a hammer in a forge region.
Can’t remember anyone finding a Hacksaw either.

    -t

So that would be a balance issue, since we have three Forge regions in a row. Starting a game in Forsaken Airfield would be a dead end. Unless there is a chance of tools spawning in the transition regions.

This might also be fixed when they add more regions to Far Territory, sure.

But as I said above, now I'm fine with that, just dislike "deterministic" gaming in Long Dark. To be fair what I miss is a "Stalkerloper" level of loot, that is, all items having a chance of spawning (from tools to high-tier clothing), but with Interloper-level scarcity. The "medium" baseline gives you just too much of everything.

  9. Ok, I now have read more info in the forusn and found my first tool,a hammer, after five maps (from Forsaken Airfield to Mystery Lake). I was afraid that it was a bug, but probably it was just a very bad roll, as mentioned.

I'm kind of split because usually I start the game in a map where I want to play, so being forced to leave is sad. On the other hand, having to cross maps and maps in seach for basic loot (still harvesting carcasses  by hand!) is something that gives you purpose to travel.

In the end, I liked it. I don't kown if they introduced more randomness now than before, but that is actually nice.

On a side not, I may have had trouble with tools, but I had more matches than any other interloper run. I guess you lose from one side, but win from another. ;)

  10. I'm having this but in a custom game with Interloper settings for loot plus rifle and revolver availability. In the whole Forsaken Airfield, Transfer Pass, Broken Railroad and Far Range Branch Line I found only two Prybars (both in Far Range, near the locked door, perhaps guaranteed spawns?). No hammer, hacksaw, can opener or guns.

In Stalker, however, I was swimming in loot in these three areas.

If the new loot tables made things more rare in all levels, I'm ok with that. Just think they need more balance.

  11. After my first run in Far Territory in Stalker, I started another using custom settings. For loot, it's set as Interloper, but with Revolver and Rifle availability.

I carefully checked almost alll points of interest in Transition Pass and Forsaken Airfield (just a coulpe of caves missing) and I didn't find any hand tools. Not a single hacksaw, hammer, can opener or prybar (also, no guns besides the flare gun in the usual place).

Is this a bug or part of the new loot tables? If it's the second option, I strongly suggest to put at least one tool in the whole map. I wanted to "make a living" in the new maps, but will have to run away because of that.

(also posting to make the universe conspire and make me find a tool in the last cave possible...)

  12. For me the sound is quite off in the new maps. Sometimes I have a wind sound that is almost unbeareable, even with a -11 windchill or so. Others I have a blizzard with nothing more than a mild wind sound (took me some time to even recognize that a blizzard was coming). And also sometimes all the sound is simply cut for a few seconds. I have the impression that this is particularly offensive around Drifter's Island, but may be just because I spent much time there and the cabin isn't a transition area

The new sounds are great, but there is still a lot to adjust. It's bad not being able to guess wind strenght by the sound, only by the stats.

  13. BTW, forgot to mention, but the Junker's Paddock trailer seems to be bugged because when I enter it during a Fog, it completely "heals" Insomnia risk AND ends the Fog outside. Since this doesn't happen in the Hangar or the trailer by the Airfield, I suppose it's a bug (however, it could be turned in "something else to do": if you run to a closed area without electronic devices - such as trailers - your Insomnia risk won't increase).

  14. So, I think is a nice addition. Insomnia is a new challenge to deal with, and although it's just a mild annoyance for the most part, can be really a danger for the ones who live "on the edge" (i.e. taking damage from food, thirst and cold during the day to recover later on sleep). And it's always good to have new uses for items, such as Herbal Tea.

However, there is a huge flaw: there is basically nothing you can do about the Glimmer Fog. As far as I know, there is a single spot in Forsaken Airfield where you can hide from it, besides the unlikely option to run to another region. So, if the Fog starts at morning, I know I'll have Insomnia. If starts at afternnon, I know nothing will happen.

Since almost always you can't take any proper action, I quickly learned that the best thing to do is to just go on with the life and ignore the Fog completely. And then all creepiness and fun was gone. The only real challenge as a player is to deal with sudden foggy weather, but I don't think the developers idea was to do only this.

A game event is only fun when you can do something abou it (it's called "to play the game"). With Blizzards you have to pay attention to the weather signs, run for cover to light a fire, etc. Even for Auroras you have options, to look for shelter and/or avoid animals more than usual.

So my suggestion is to add something extra to react to the Fog. Perhaps caves could be another safe spot. Or lighting a fire could make you deal better wiht the spooky lights and slows down Insomnia risk (without actually preventing it - it would be an interesting choice in an Interloper run where every match, but also every condition point, counts). Anything that changes the Fog from "ok, it's this time of the day, I'll have that" to "ok, I can/I cannot deal with Insomnia today, what can I do about it?".

Nevertheless, keep up the good work! I know there were some issues at the release, but I'm enjoying a lot the new regions.

  15. Thanks for the suggestions! The drivers are updated and the correct GPU is selected for the game. I thought that it may be the temperature also, but GPU temperature stays between 70-80 degrees when running the game (with maximum of 85). I guess that's not so high to explain the issue, right? I use a cooler plate an cleaned the laptop not so long ago.

  16. I recently installed TLD in my HP laptop, which should be able to handle the game fine in low settings: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ, 8 Gb RAM, NVidia 960M, game in a M.2 SSD.

However, I notice frequent FPS drops (every 30-45 seconds, more or less). With everything at the lowest, the game runs at 110-120 FPS, dropping to 30. With settings adjusted to run at 60 FPS (my monitor refresh rate), it drops to 15-20.

When I'm running the game, CPU usage, RAM and SSD traffic are always below the maximum, even during the drops. The GPU is constantly near 100%.

The curious is that this happen even indoors, without even walking around. Logically, it also happens outdoors, with good and bad wheather, in small or large maps... Toggling Vsync doesn't make a difference.

I noticed something similar happening in other game (Portal 2), and I fixed it by capping FPS at 65. However, doing this with Nvidia control painel didn't solve the issue for TLD.

Does anybody knows what could be causing these frequent and systematic drops? Any possible solution?
