this may be an unpopular opinion here but i dont like the direction of this update.  i think we suspend belief quite enough already with aurora wolves etc.  now we have zombie poison wolves and specific gear to only combat that?  i was hoping this would go a more primitive direction that the game built its success on.  more crafting options and bush craft.  the graphical stuff sounds great but this update further alienates a 2015 player

I don't disagree with you (I am a very old player as well ) But please remember this is one region out of many. None of my playthroughs had me trapped anywhere, So I could go full bushcraft after venturing into that weirdness (like with Blackrock). I also prefer more grounded survival experience, but I wouldn't say this update would alienate me. It just adds a map that might be too dangerous to vacation in.

Time to add powdered Tang to the game! 😆

An all meat diet would need some Metamucil for sure. Metamucil has a bonus vitamin C version, but I digress... our survivors need fibre if they ever hope to poop that bear meat. I hope there is some vitamin C fortified fibre drink instant mix sometime soon. (Yes, I am just being goofy here)

  3. WHOOP!!! Finally an official update to First-Person Presence. All that other stuff is great, but I am most stoked about seeing my ingame status reflected in the first person animations. I voted for that in that poll long ago. So happy to see it happening! 😄

  4. Fantastic!

Will certain cooked foods offer bonuses? The description of Lily's pancakes seems to suggest it. (or it's possibly just a very filling dish)

Anyway, Thanks again HTL. Really looking forward to this.👍

  5. I noticed the two transmitters I lost were the first two I fixed. So... has a mechanic been added that transmitters die over time and we have retroactively lost them? That makes sense on Interloper, I guess. But I play a very chill custom setting. Did that Interloper adjustment bleed into the rest of the settings?

This happened to the Forlorn tower on my custom save. The ones I repaired at Black Rock and Desolation Point are still fine. I lost one out of three. Weird.

Happened to my Stalker run as well. Already completed the Tale, so had 4 towers repaired (Airfield, Muskeg, PV and Milton) but now only the ones in Airfield and Muskeg show up as repaired.

I was mistaken on my initial report about my custom save. I lost 2 transmitters. I lost FM and PV. BR and DP are still fine. I haven't been to transmitters on FA or MT yet, I was just fixing the other transmitters so I could go after all the stuff in one big mission. I hope this is just the "on" switch flipping back. Big annoying unfun pain if I have to lug more car batteries around and scrounge more wires and fuses.

As long as there's no complaints about lugging batteries across half a map.😁.

I doubt you'll hear complaints about difficulty from Lopers. (Can't make promises for anyone else, including me). I do wish I hadn't recycled so many batteries into lead in my current playthrough. Gonna be a lot of walking to fix those Transmitters.... I have lots of lead for bullets, but few batteries left for the transmitters... Oh, well. If it was easy, it wouldn't be TLD.

Oh c'mon lighten up.  He's just celebrating a bit and they wouldn't have done it without significant pushback.

I think Hinterland handled it masterfully. If it was there at the start, the Loper crowd would have pooped on it. Now the Lopers want to play it. Pretty slick, IMHO. I respect it.

  9. I am very happy with the update so far. However, I stand with the Interloper players (though I am not one). Even though the new gameplay is mostly navigational help which they have traditionally disregarded in previous updates, I think they want 'right of refusal' rather than have it be denied. Some of them might even want to enjoy the lore aspect.

Since literally all of the players I watch on Youtube are interloper players I have to say this deserves some more thought. A toggle setting in custom or a loot balance could solve this controversy.

  10. Sounds good, Raph! I was one of the guys who voted for paid DLC updates. I feel kinda guilty for having over 2200 good gaming hours for only 15 bucks.  I'll be in line for the pre-order for the seasons. Still hoping for a co-op mode in the future, but still the best value for my gaming dollars. Really interested to see what you come up with next.

rain or snow did you mean?

I was crafting a pair of deerskin pants that I didn't even need in the barn by that farm. Blizzard swept in, but I had a fire going in the barrel. The barrel fire didn't last as long as the crafting session and I thought I'd be fine with my current gear. My overconfidence let me ignore the red in my temperature indicator. Just adding my 950 day survivor to the official kill count and warning other players against that fate. Good times.

  12. I would like to explain a few of my choices on the survey.

-I ranked the board game option high because that sounds like a great way to cover awkward silences on backpacking/ camping trips with my bros. Please make sure a magnetized/miniaturized/travel version is available.

-I also ranked CO-OP STANDALONE very high. I was defensive to nerds who were trying to make TLD into RUST in the past because I wanted the hinterfolk to focus on refining the single-player experience. But Survival Mode with a pal would be really nice. They could make that an entirely different development branch. I would be willing to buy that as a different game if it was implemented.

-I ranked "first person presence" higher than "customization". Because I want to have a clue what I am wearing before my stats start dropping. Getting frostbite after a wolf fight because I didn't notice my mittens got ate is a bummer. A skyrim-like display that shows your outfit choices in first-person would really help with immersion.

-I ranked Survival Mode higher of importance than Story Mode. *dodges tomatoes* NOT because I don't love the story mode story,  I do! I just make an ass of myself in all of those quicktime moments because they freak me out. I would rather watch a better player on youtube (like Accurize2) play the story parts and let me watch it like a movie. I prefer to play Survival Mode because the story is mine. Even if I screw up or get something wrong it just becomes part of the story... or the end of the story. If I get it wrong in Story Mode, it becomes frustrating. I have to redo it. I don't wanna argue for a good story. I just want to press "PLAY".

-I ranked "Big Package" DLC higher than the other options because I don't want to have to come back and keep checking for little updates. I want to give Hinterland my money, but I'm not going to be a sucker. This player does not play that "microtransaction" game... Not that they were threatening me with that... I'm just saying a whole pack with new maps, new items, new gameplay mechanics, and possibly more story sounds like a better deal.

-I also ranked the possibility of TLD audioplays very highly. I hope others did as well. So much of what would be needed for that is already in place. I believe what we get for this would be of very high quality.

I have had too many beers and I have taken too much of your time.  Thank you for listening to me ramble.

Hmm, perhaps there would be less incentive to come back when you are not in a closed loop of great bear..

The game (survival mode) isn't about making a home. It's about survival. A random path of implied escape that leads to my death is better than sleeping to my death. Let me die fighting!

So, your only way is forward then? I mean the further you travel, the more you have to have stuff saved, like where you left stuff and where you dropped tools and where you set up a base.

How would that be handled if you generated miles of area and decided to go back? Hell of a database to keep everything in memory for a game!!

Nah. The only way is forward. Once you exit a zone it is in the past. Earthquakes and Auroras and stuff broke it. Tough world, but that's the game we play. Keep in mind, any new zone might well have better loot than what you have on you.... but what are you willing to drop if the next transition requires you to climb?

I hasten to point out that Raph DID NOT announce this as any official gametype. He casually mentioned the idea in a Milton Mailbox a few months back and my imagination has run with it..  I do not work at Hinterland and I am not authorized, qualified or capable of speaking for them. This is pure speculation on my part.

I would love this gametype, though. :)

I would have to respectfully disagree.

I really don't think procedural generation would be a good thing for this game.
I much prefer having regions that are smartly designed, balanced, and crafted with intention.
I think if No Man's Sky taught us anything at all... it's that if we just toss some assets at an algorithm then eventually things just look really "same-y" or it could generate some random chaos that may not even look like earth (or even traverseable) let alone work as a location on Great Bear Island.

    :coffee::fire::coffee:
Don't get me wrong, procedural generation gels with and works really well for some types of games... but I really don't think it would work well with this game.

Raph did float this great idea one time about following an endless train track with randomly selected premade zones that had randomly generated loot, wildlife, flora, weather, and structures as an alternate game mode and the game would just generate more as long as you can keep going. IMHO, that gametype would fit perfectly with this game.  That would fit under the "randomly generated" banner, right?  That doesn't sound bad to me as long as there are enough different zones.

  16. Dear Raph,

Congratulations on Episode 3. Not only is it probably my favorite story episode yet, this update was also a nice sprucing up of things. I quite like the new flora and fauna assets and the new sounds, as well as the new items and gameplay mechanics- my favorite being the rescue of the survivors from the airliner crash. Carrying someone who's helpless gives the mission a real sense of urgency.

    My question is:

Were you nervous about making the survivor rescue missions considering the sometimes unfriendly reactions to "escort missions" in other games?
