  1. I think one of the easy ways to discourage players from just spamming the shotgun with its short range power is to simulate how difficult and painful it is for people unfamiliar with shotguns to shoot them. IRL I've probably had the highest round count with a 12 gague shotgun but I still hesitate a little bit to shoot it because the recoil is in excess of anything that isn't a .30 caliber rifle or thereabouts.

  2. I like the idea, although for something like that revolver I go with a breakdown that is commensurate with its major components i.e. adding stuff like a revolver frame instead of firing mechanism, I've added some notes to the parts you listed above.

    • grip - not sure if I would categorize this as significant enough to make it a separate part, why not make it a part of the revolver's frame?
    • firing mechanism - this will always be integral to a revolver's frame - sure you could completely strip down a revolver to get down this level of detail, but I think that would go beyond what a person in a survival situation could realistically do.
    • barrel - good pick, I'd even say if you had multiple lengths of barrel you could slightly alter the performance and handling characteristics of the ammunition and revolver (respectively).
    • sights - I'm a little iffy on this one as well, a lot of the time revolvers will have the sights as integral parts of the frame (rear sight) and barrel (front sight)

    I would add the following:

    • frame - this is what constitutes the majority of the revolver - if you took one down completely to its individual pieces, this would be the biggest piece of contiguous metal.
    • cylinder - this is how the revolver would contain all ammunition, I think in the interest of gameification, I would leave it as a standard 6 round cylinder.
    • crane - this one is a bit iffy too, you can't really have a modern revolver without one, but I also figure this would be best "gamified" as being part of the frame.

  3. You probably could wear it on top of another pack, but for me the real concern is the water freezing in the line. I wasn't even in that cold of an area (14ºF) but the water in the line froze, while the water in the bladder was still good.

  4. After doing a light search on corned beef and spam, I found there was little to no discussion on this. (Although I found frequent mentions of spam as a verb, not the food product.)

I'd like to see the addition of canned meats like Spam and Corned Beef

Just like IRL I would say that the high salt content of canned meats should deplete your thirst meter a good amount but in turn should provide a very good amount of calories. The canned meats usually have a way to open the product without needing a can opener. I prefer to eat Spam and Corned Beef cooked, but I think you should be able to eat them cold as well.

  5. It just so happens that I was watching Back to the Future 3 and towards the end, Doc talked about creating specialized logs with compressed sawdust and anthracite. I didn't know what anthracite was and when I looked it up on Wikipedia its apparently a variety of coal that has the highest energy density of all types of coal.

Canada is among the countries that mines it, perhaps it could be a very rare variant of coal that will burn more intensely than conventional coal.

  6. A prequel story would make a great DLC, its just like the one Frostpunk had, where the people knew of the impending disaster and were making preparations for the storm to come. Maybe see the start of the disaster from whomever is setting up all the prepper caches throughout the island.

All these discussion... all the game needs is a "don't show this message again" checkbox.

Yeah I'm not sure why this wasn't an option to begin with, you could even say that checking box was an acknowledgement of the message and then proceed to not show it again unless the game was uninstalled/reinstalled.

  8. This is reminiscent of something I used to do in Skyrim, I would basically sit down and craft a bunch of daggers to simply max out the crafting skill. I think the concern here is that people might cheese this game mechanic to max out the fishing skill without actually fishing.

Wouldn't the eggs just freeze solid? Are there any types of birds that nest and lay eggs in the depths of a Canadian winter? I wouldn't imagine there are many, if any.

Interesting point, I would take that mean the ravens we see would be going extinct soon.

  10. I'd be ok with this and I think a lot of people were expecting something like this, ravens have been in this game since day 1 and like other birds it stands to reason that they'd have nests and lay eggs.

Is there any kind of fish pie you can make with sardines yet? If not that would be cool imo.

With flour now in the game, I was thinking you could take sardines and a can of tomato soup (probably need more flour to thicken it) to make a rudimentary flatbread with sardines.

    So have bears ;).

True and I think from what I recall a lot of players early on wondered if the predators would take meat stored outside. It certainly would add complexity to food management as opposed to just me mindlessly dropping meat outside.

Imagine going outside the building you’ve been staying in to get the meat you’ve been keeping outside only to see a bear right outside the door.I think I’d have a heart attack!

I think that would be part of the challenge, I really have gone on autopilot when it comes to food management in that way. Maybe make this something that only happens on Interloper, I always get the impression that the hardcore players want even more challenge.

  13. With the addition of frontier cooking it got me thinking about some of the habits I developed playing this game. I tend to store all uncooked meat and cooked meat outside out of habit. Without thinking I would probably try to do that with ingredients like the carrots and potatoes.  Then it struck me, deer have been known to eat out of garbage cans in neighborhoods that encroach on their habitat. Although I would hate to waste those ingredients, I'd say the carrots and potatoes would make good lures for deer. For me I tend to hunt from odd angles like from above or below eye level of most animals where I would wait for them to crest a hill before firing, I think luring will help to make those of us who ambush hunt (especially with a revolver) a bit more effective at the cost of potentially valuable ingredients.

I imagine though that the carrots and potatoes would eventually freeze when left out and deer probably won't be attracted to frozen vegetables, so that would be another caveat, you could use them to lure deer only for a small window of time before they freeze.

The skillet I have is NOT usable as a melee weapon! I can carry it by the handle one-handed if it's empty, but it's a struggle. It's one of those 15" Lodge skillets, and while its weight of ~12lb/~5.kg may not seem like much, it's very unwieldy when you're holding the entire thing by just the panhandle. It's like the difference between holding a gallon of milk at arm's length, vs. against your chest. You really do need to use the smaller handle on the opposite side as well.

Imagine if HL added a 5.kg skillet to the game. Who would even touch that thing apart from as a collectible?

I'm pretty sure I have the same one and I agree it is very unwieldy, it'd have to a be a two handed weapon. With how tough they are I almost feel like they'd be a good substitute for the hammer lol

  15. It reminds me of what you can do in The Last of Us with shivs that are good for a one hit kill and that's it. At the very least it'd make a good defensive weapon if you're stuck out in the open with a predator nearby.

    I LOVE THIS SUGGESTION

CAVEAT: has to be this rifle specifically

    image.thumb.jpeg.38541542cd60c685040ae0c551739516.jpeg

    🙂🙂🙂

That being said, I’m not sure it could be reskinned as a variant because the actions are completely different?? It would require the first person view to be a different movement; unlike just reskinning the Vaughn’s or Curators.

Upside to adding this rifle specifically is the 45-70 makes a solid Bear or Moose round, albeit with a shorter range.

That seems to be the problem there, that's like saying let's make a variant of the revolver and ending up with a Glock.

I think the sensibilities about firearms and this game have evolved, I remember when there were a lot of dumb suggestions that were tantamount to turning this game into Call of Duty. I've always been for firearms that are consistent with the design aesthetic of the game, I think a lever action fits the "country" look of the game. If you go to the Canadian Cabela's website you can even see that they sell a wide variety of firearms, including lever action rifles.

  17. Great idea, I'm sure I've had a thought like this before but I'm glad others are thinking about more food options as well.

I think the idea of smoking meats has been presented before, but I'm not sure what everyone's thoughts are on it today?

I'd look forward to a Long Dark sandbox where I can make smoked sausages.
