I kind of expect that it's the display that's doing the rounding not the game engine, and I actually had, say, .0499 of that item, but the display rounded it up. I don't think it would hurt to just expose the actual amount, instead of showing an incorrect rounded value. Let's say... show up to 4 decimal places rather than 2 like I just did, and it'd make a huge world of difference!

Nope, you are on the wrong track (or we both are). Try the Running River Oats. Originally it's a package of 0.8kg and you need 0.10kg for each meal to make. But after seven portions made, for the eighth you will see the same as did with the cooking oil. It's weird.

Also... I can't make this bannock because I only have 0.05L of the required 0.05L of cooking oil? BWUH????

The bannock-story: this is a problem of a weird rounding process used, from the very beginning of the game (I mean back the Early Access). You're gonna see the same with oats, lamp fuel, etc. Really should be changed.

  3. Dear Hinterland, Dear Raphael,

thanks for the news and all the information. They are cheering. 🙂

But I have some long aged thoughts about developing the world of the game.

    1. New region "National Reserve".  I really don't understand, why we lack this in the game. I've been only once to Canada, visited two Reserves and they were great experiences for me. Just a large forest, like the size of Pleasant Valley, with river, lake, etc. And a few buildings like Reserve Rangers HQ, small accommodation hotel for nature observer scientists, plus tiny shelter houses and scientists' huts here and there. I understand the activity of forest talkers, but exactly the huge differences between the Reserve and the industrial areas give fuel for them. And a bonus idea here: this could be the only region without any wolves - "The really quiet apocalypse" 😀 . Why not.

    2. Ice fishing anywhere. So, we have prybars and hatchets, but we can fish only in the fishing huts with the fishing holes cleared. Making holes on the ice anywhere would be a nice addition - imagine the present standing, Coastal Highway(yes) - Crumbling Highway(no) - Desolation Point(no). (I think knives are too weak for this, while heavy hammers too dangerous to break the ice uncontrolled.)

    3. Walking speed is too fast in the game. I realized this in January this year, when I've been to northern Norway (Sappmi). Walk using snowshoes in the (almost) untouched winter nature is slow, but without them is very slow (and exhausting). It would be a nice addition in the Main Menu - Settings a "Walk speed" option, where Default=1 is the current value, goes down to -2 with 0.5 steps. And the harder settings would drain energy similar to sprinting. Thus, even a Pilgrim walk from Mistery Lake Camp Office to Carter Hydro Dam, could add a little spice to the gameplay.

This post became longer than intended, thank you for patient reading. 🙂

    Best Regards,
    Palbi

Awww, come on, it is a game, it can't be perfect in every aspect of reproducing real life.

While waiting for this release I have played several top games and I can't think of any game that comes close to TLD for attention to such detail.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not questioning the overall quality of the game. But to closer a game gets to perfection, the more obviously can be seen where it can be further optimized.

  5. Hello Hinterland,

Thank you for your hard work and commitment, I think it's time for me to start a new survival experience after 2 years of playing existing saves.. 😃

On the other hand, and I don't wanna seem greedy, but I have questions, just to normalize what we have now:

    - Do you plan to change the decay rate of food in Survival modes? As I see it, it's against any phísics, that meat dropped outside the house decays much faster in Interloper (around -40C) than in Pilgrim (around -15C).

    - Do you plan to redesign the smoke coming from the various fireplaces' chimneys? That thin line does not fit into the whole feeling of the game. (I understand that this can be tricky and cause a bit higher hardver demand, but campfires can do it.)

    - Do you plan to equlize the gameplay differences between the regular survival modes and the custom modes? (E.g. Custom mode: crampons don't degrade, cartridges can't be harvested.)

    - Do you plan to add options of knife/hatchet to custom modes?

Nevertheless, you are making great work! I'm wishing you all good health and a wonderful Christmas! 🙂

    Dear Hinterland Team,

I started to play Ep.4 upon release, and it's fine and exciting.

I have only one, but major disappointment: One house in this chapter is the very same as we can see in the Region TWM. For me it's destroying the illusion in a way. That house in TWM should be unique throughout the game, and it was until now. Please, replace that house in Blackrock, with whatever you can. I do believe you have a design you have never used so far, no matter how ugly-looking or how humble-feeling. Please, replace that house in Blackrock.

    Best wishes to you.

  7. Thanks for the quick patch! 👍

Oddly enough, my Steam displays a message upon starting the game, saying:

"Steam was unable to synchronize your The Long Dark Files files with Steams Cloud. In case you used this application on another computer (I DID NOT!!) it can happen, that these files/settings are unsynchronized with the Steam cloud. In case you now start this application, these files/settings may get lost."

I started up the game, and everything -including my only save- looks to be fine.

    UPDATE!
I restarted my PC and the message is gone, everything is OK and I have no missing inventory items. It seems a restart is advised.

    I would think so.

I had 2 hours of very welcoming non-crashing yesterday. Now, there was a sudden resolution / texture change between one of the loading screens, which dropped my fps mid-game. This is something I have not seen since last winter when it was a recurring occurence for me, and I still don't understand it, but I take that anyday over freezing (no pun intended)

I could now test the "without -force-glcore" setting, and the loading screens still keep freezing. Furthermore, I see a new problem (with -force-glcore of course) : if I want to pick up certain objects and hover the cursor over them, I can't, but towards the edge of the object I can. It's mainly with piles of objects, but I can't see any regularity.

Well, this potentially (?) might've fixed the load screen freeze/crashing, as for the first time in 3 days I've been able to get outside of the Quonset as well as back in and out. We'll see if it holds true later. However the issue of key bindings mysteriously resetting to defaults is still there. Anyway thanks for patches as always

Should this mean, we can remove the start-up option "-force-glcore" under Steam settings?

  10. Hi Raphael,

    thanks for the update.

I also hope that you all at Hinterland and your loved ones have all been healthy.

Many mentioned the cover picture of your post, I personally thought of a possible new Region of Survival Mode. (I played through the three Episodes of Story, but I am not sure it is for me, so I prefer playing Survival Mode.) One thing occured to me, thinking on the possible new Region: I'd rather see new options in the existing world, such as fixing furnitures or the roof of Mountaineers Hut in TWM, or cleaning up the inside of houses, or nailing animal hides on walls to develop thermal insulation inside. I know there are mods, but Hinterland do not officially support them, and I don't like them either (irrespectively of game title).

But I also understand, and know, these are difficult times, so I am just waiting patiently.

    Best wishes! 🙂

  11. Hi All,

this is the first time I make the 4DON challenge. One thing I noticed immediately, that the surrounding is not entirely quiet. I hear owls and other birds, that cannot be seen or hunted in the game anyway. But it's a new experience for me, all in all.

It's probably my imagination, but the region seems smaller somehow. Roads are somehow shorter. Which is great, because it was just too damn vast to begin with. Might be my imagination though, so don't take my word for it ^^

I haven't tried the region yet, but I was hoping that the regions would be bigger to travel. I somehow feel too easy to walk big distances even in Interloper.  Well, personal preferences... 😉

I don't find this odd at all....

I find this odd as well. My reason is that nothing else look like this, just the harvested meats (fish, venison, etc.). Like they were thrown from a distance, not layed down. All the other "dropped" stuff, like canned food, knife, firewood, etc. behaves like always before in the gameplay - basically from the first public versions.

Tök véletlen, hogy most erre jártam, és megláttam az ötleted. Támogatom, besegítenék.
