Placing objects

I'm sure this has been asked before, but how do you place objects, such as food, onto shelves and other objects? I've seen people do this, but I'm not sure what they're doing to achieve this.

Open up your inventory and drop the item on the floor. Then close your inventory and right-click on the item. They will show as green for places you can put them and red for places you cannot. Then left-click to set the item in place.
