Salty salt salt salt.

So... Salt. In the past it was used to preserve meat. I don't think that it would be used in game to prolong its life indefietly, but slow it down by a heafty amount. A d as a drawback it would require water to remove the salt or else it would drain ALOT of water when eaten. And water used to clean meat should not be equal to amount lost. It should be less than the amount lost if you just ate the salty meat. It would be a new item and maybe gained from crackers in small amounts
