  1. Hey guys, if there is one thing i would love to see added to the game, it is more statistic in the journal. Especially topic and region specific statistics. Sure...., most of it wouldnt really have a lot of inpact on the game and would only satisfiy statistic freaks like me. But I think the region specific statistics could come in very handy. Some of the already existing counter could be easily put in there as well. For example: Mystery Lake: Explored: 87% Days spent here: 47 Wolf Encounters: 42 Bear Encounters: 23 Moose Encounter: 2 Meat harvested: 28,3kg Plants harvested: 17 Food found: 8,25kg Items looted: 216 Favourite Shelter: Trappers Homested Averrage Temperature: -12°C Blizzards: 18 It could be really helpful for new players when exploring the island. it quickly gives you an overlook on the differences between regions. It would also help a lot chosing a region to settle down after having explored the whole map. Numbers are just made up in this example but I probably wouldnt set up end game camp in ML. there seems to be some good hunting grounds and weather isnt too bad (yet. it was measured when i was there. could be colder now), but it also looks like i am running into wolves almost every day and into a bear every second day. If my "Explored, Food found & Items looted" Numbers were quite low on the other hand, I would at least consider another trip there for more loot. Some of them should still have a total amount for the whole island. like Blizzards survived, the animal encounter, items looted, maybe a favourite shelter for the whole island (based on hours spent in it. caves + snow shelter included). But splitting some up in to the regions might be quite interesting and helpful. Another thing would be topic or skill specific statistics. Like fire. We do have the total amount of started fires and longest burning one. But how many of my 216 total fires have been lit with a match? how often did I light them with a torch? or a firestriker? It could show you how good you are at making fire. having used 23 matches to start 9 fires? You might wanna think about getting some better wood. I personally would also love to see how much of each fuel i have burned. Maybe the amount in kg/lbs for sticks, reclaimed wood, cedar, fir, coal & books. That wouldnt really help in the game but could make a nice new feat. after burning 1000kg of nice fir and cedar wood, those fuels get a extra 10% duration and 1°C heat. Maybe a "miner" feat as well. after burning a certain amount of coal it gets a duration + heat boost. This one could actually affect how I play the game. I would be more likely to set up camp near a mine or have regular trips to get coal instead of just burning wood. Having more things counted in the statistics opens up quite a lot of possibilities for new feats. and more feats means forcing more decisions on players. but let's get back to statistics. there are so many cool things that could be in the journal. food wise the amount of cooked food, burned food, total of melted snow, favourite cooking spot (fire, stove, .....), total time spent cooking, average quality of food. Or Hunting Stats. Missed shots, critical shots. Stats about exploring would be cool as well. Caves found, Lakes found, Bridges crossed, buildings discovered, workbenches found, corpse found and stuff like that. There is so much more like tools broken down, how often did i sharpen something. What would you guys like to see counted in the journal? you think region sepcific stats would be helpful? And what do you think about more stats opening up possibilities for new feats?
  2. This is how I image farming/gardening in the long dark: I found a cabin near the lake with tons of sweets, sodas and ketchup chips. I rather have the salt & vinegar chips but I took them anyway. I also found some seeds. No idea what they are but temperatures seem to get warmer. Maybe spring is on the rise and I could try growing some food. I took 2 pieces of cloth, watered them and put the seeds in between, before lying the cloth in the window sill. I made sure my fire kept burning to keep my hut warm. Seedlings like it warm. That's what the gardening book said i found. Then i took the old broom apart for some wood and with a piece of scrap metal I had crafted myself an improvised hoe. The book said something about digging over the ground as well. But it also said I should think about where to put my vegetable bed. I found a nice place right behind my hut. From where the sun went up and down, I knew this was the south side and therefore received the most sun light. Even though it wasn't that much and sometimes the sun wouldnt shine for days. But i tried anyway and started using some reclaimed wood and laid it out in a square to mark the edges of my vegetable bed. I didn't like it though, so I grabbed my hatchet and went into the woods to find some nice cedar wood. All the photos in the gardening book looked so nice, so I wanted to make my little garden look pretty as well. I reused the reclaimed wood though to build a bit of a wind shelter for one side. Another side was sheltered by my hut. Place wise this is the best I could think of. Time for the hard work. I starded digging over the ground but failed quickly. It was frozen solid and my hoe broke after a few minutes of trying. Frustrated I went back inside, made a fire, tried to remember where I'd put that other piece of scrap metal I had left and brewed myself a cup of Moose Kicks! At least I thought so. I ran out of water. So i melted some snow and that's when it hit me. I grabbed loads of fire wood and a pack of matches and ran back out. I started a fire where I tried to loosen up the ground and loaded it up with fuel for the whole night. I went back inside, my coffee was burned but I just made a new one. Was time for dinner anyway. The next morning I went out and found my burned out fire. Having made a new hoe I gave it another try. It worked this time. The fire has defrosted the ground and I was able to loosen it up. It was still a really slow progress and took a few days. But it also allowed me to harvest some soil, which was needed as my seeds have sprouted into little seedlings. So i took some inside. Used a old recycled can and opened it from the bottom as well. I than covered the bottom again with cloth, hold in place by a fishing line wrapped around the edge of the can with the cloth. That way the water will drain but the soil stays inside my homemade flower pot. I made a few of them and transfered my seedlings into them before placing them back on the window sill. The next few days I spend finishing off the ground while my seedlings grew into little plants. Temperatures got a little warmer as well so I took my little plants and transfered them into the ground. I watered them and went back inside. The next morning I went out and checked on them but the nights cold has killed them all. Frustrated I stormed back into my hut, not seeing the hoe i left lying around. I stepped on it, it smashed straight in my face and knocked me out. Lying there unconscious I ended up freezing to death. But at least the vegetable bed my frozen corpse lied next to looked pretty.
  3. I dont think it would need another flashing pop up on the screen though. An already existing one could simply be updated. It does not show when picking up a single stick. But when harvesting branches for example, you get the message "harvested sticks (3)" It could be changed to "harvested 3 sticks (12)" The number in brackets would now show the total amount of sticks currently carried. The pop up would need to be added though, when picking up a single stick as well. Renaming it to "received 1 stick (13)" might be needed too. I personally wouldnt mind having it in the corner on the screen for 3-5 sec, everytime i pick up a single item for the benefit of not having not to check my backpack all the time to see if I got enough sticks for my snow shelter yet. An option to switch off the notification would avoid people, that dont want it, to be annoyed with it. Although I am not sure it makes sense for all objects. Maybe just have it for craftable objects? Perhaps fire wood and coal, too? Dont think it would make sense for stuff like food though (except maybe water). Due to the amount of different foods, you would still need to look into your backpack to see how much food you got in total. Unless it would show the total amount of food in weight or calories. Its a great idea though. really like it, even though it would only be useful for certain items. And to be honest..., its more of a comfort thing that saves you a few seconds by not having to check your inventory. One could also simply engage more with the game, check your backpack once and than just count yourself how many sticks you pick up, instead of having the game count for you.
  4. Not sure that this is something i would realisticly do in real life. I would probably just pull up the rope, attach my backpack to it and than slowly let the rope rappel down the cliff before climbing down myself. The method also works the other way around. Before climbing up a rope, I would just attach my backback to it, climb up and once I am at the top, I just pull up the rope with my gear. It just makes much more sense than throwing your stuff down a cliff and your granola bars wont turn into cereals again either. It would require the player to be able to take off their backpack though, which is something I would love to see anyway. I kinda like the idea of having several backpacks. But that idea might need its own tread.
