  1. It’s also possible, when you’re exploring near the top of a cliff, to accidentally go too far and find that it’s impossible to go back up, so the only way to proceed is down. I’ve done this a few times.
  2. Yes,HRV starts can be tricky if you don’t find a light source. But it is possible to navigate the cave to Milton without a light source, at least during the day. I did it by walking backwards in order to keep my orientation. You can see from one lit spot to the next, and there aren’t too many legs. The last leg is hardest, but once you get onto the ramp and make it halfway up, you can turn and see the exit. Good luck!
  3. I must say I’m very suspicious of NAV. What you’re seeing sounds like application blocking somehow got turned on inadvertently for TLD. See, for example https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v117055450# Disclaimer: I have never run antivirus software under macOS 10 or later. I don’t think it’s necessary or advisable. On new Macs at work it gets installed automatically by IT, but the also give me admin access, so it never survives day 1.
  4. This is certainly very strange! And annoying I’m sure. My other suggestion right now is to roll back the version of TLD in Steam and see if that makes a difference. If the problem persists with older versions maybe it derives from the recent OS update rather than the TLD update. The suggestion to create a new user account and try from there is good too. Do you have a firewall turned on in the Security Preferences? I wonder if a port is getting blocked for some reason.
  5. It's very hard to give suggestions because everyone's network setup is different. Also, I'm no expert, but here are some things to look at think about ... First, have you tested this with different web browsers? What does Airport Utility show? (This is probably only relevant if you're on wifi, not a wired connection.) Does the network control panel (first pane of System Preferences -> Network) show an IP address? Does this change when you start/stop TLD? (You should also see a green dot next to at least one of the icons on the left.) If you open a terminal window and type something like "ping amazon.com" (no quotes) while TLD is running, what is the output? You say that "The LAN and other computers are unaffected." What does this mean? If there are other computers on your local network, can you still contact them when TLD is running?
  6. By IL you mean interloper? I never fish on interloper until level 2 (by reading) since the time several years ago I fished for 24 hours straight on level 1 and didn’t catch anything. So things may have changed, but the numbers you cited don’t seem out of line to me.
  7. Spawn must have been FM in order to be at the camp office on the morning of day 2. Logging trailers will be warm if you sleep or pass time in bed, so I would return there. But I also would have gone from the camp office straight to Trappers rather than go to the lookout tower. Or probably stopped at Trappers first upon reaching ML.
  8. @stratvox probably knows this, but you don’t have to wait until it’s done heating to move it. You can move it immediately after placing it and that will prevent it from burning after it’s warm.
  9. If you move it after placing it, it will revert to warming mode. Also, in cooking mode it will burn if you leave it too long, but in warming mode it won’t.
  10. Was cooking dinner, went inside to drop off the guts and hide, and came back to this mess.
  11. I’m pretty sure cabin fever doesn’t start until day 50 for custom games. Impressive run so far!
  12. If you’re on the waterfall side, just cross the creek and there is a snowbank you can walk up. From the marsh side, exit the cave and follow the rocks around to the left until you get to the creek. If you stick to the left all the way, you’ll go down the same snowbank.
  13. This might not be an option for you given the constraints of your run, but you can pretty easily get from one end of that cave to the other without going through the cave itself.
  14. That sounds to me like the sound you get when you mend or craft clothing. I've had instances since the update when I get the hacksaw sound when cutting saplings with an axe (or vice versa), or no sound at all.
  15. This discussion reminds me of my very first sessions in TLD. I bought the game after the Steadfast Ranger update and I started with survival mode. I distinctly remember the first time I tried to end a session. I hit esc and the quit, expecting the game to auto save. I was very surprised to see the “Really quit?” dialog with the warning that I would lose any progress. I went into the options to look for the hot key for saving, and found it. But it didn’t work! So I went back to options and changed the binding (gotta try something, right?), and it still didn’t work. After playing around a bit more and growing increasingly frustrated, I eventually abandoned the run. Then I went to Safari and googled “how to save in the long dark”, where I learned about the save system in survival mode, and the fact that the save command is only for Wintermute. Of course noobs have a lot to learn, but this seems like an obvious objectively bad user experience.
  16. The sleekest system is to have no in- game saves at all and only have auto save on quit (for survival mode). This is not subject to the abuse you describe. It’s how nethack handles saves. The potential downside is that lots of progress can be lost if there’s a crash or other issue, but the current system has the same vulnerability. I honestly don’t understand the assertion that the current system is somehow about consequences. If that were really true, why does the game give “free” saves when entering a building? How does that reinforce the idea that actions have consequences?
  17. Just want to say that having auto-save on exit would be fantastic. It’s easily #1 on my wishlist for QOL improvements.
  18. Oh, I agree that the way saving works in Wintermute is a design decision, I just think it’s a bad one.
  19. Of course it is broken, that’s the point. I guess I’m coming from the perspective of someone who played nethack for many years, which is a permadeath game that allows saving at any point without adverse consequences for gameplay, so this choice by Hinterland has always struck me as very strange and misguided.
  20. The really ironic thing of course is that you can save at will in Wintermute without consequences.
