βDon't ask for guarantees. And don't look to be saved in any one thing, person, machine, or library. Do your own bit of saving, and if you drown, at least die knowing you were heading for shore.β β Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451

A shorter version of the challenge could be 'The Ranger's Library'*, which would just be all the skill books in one place. *Open to different titles. That was the first thing that came to mind. ππ

This can be a screenshot challenge or just to play your own story, but the idea is to gather all the books (and newspapers if you've a mind to) on Great Bear to some appropriate location for safe keeping. I started a Voyager guy in Pleasant Valley and thought the Farmhouse would make a good library. The first book I found was 'A Sewing Primer' at the Rural Store. Man, I thought Voyager temps were pretty forgiving, but it's really cold here. Oh, burning books is forbidden, no matter how desperate you are for warmth. Choose whatever difficulty you like and wherever you think would make a good library. Choose the Farmhouse, or maybe there are better places. I don't think I've ever used it as a main base for the whole island before, so for me it should be interesting. Some locations will be more challenging than others, and it's bound to take a while, so feel free to post partial completion shots, stories, or anything else from your old school archivist adventures.

I started up a new Voyager guy in Pleasant Valley to do some scouting. I think the Farmhouse is the place for the Library (or at least a good option). There's a bit of a bear problem, but inside is all the space needed. Tables & shelves all around, bookshelves in the first floor office, and space in the basement for the newspaper archives.

Given the trail, this unfortunate person seems to have had a nice straw bed, but then had to hide in here from something or someone. Too cold to wait it out without bedding. A new chocolate bar turned out to be my breakfast instead. Thanks, stranger.

Dang! Thatβs some mighty fine lightweight maximizing for ya. Hereβs to the humble fishing tackle ππ»π

I like Whiteout quite a bit. It's cool to see the storm prediction calendar in the Journal, and the difficulty does seem to build toward the end. As I said in another thread, "You think you're doing fine until the last week". We've often heard of what fun the Quonset Garage wolves can be, and Whiteout has em. I think playing that was my first time getting in multiple wolf struggles while so close to the safety of a shelter. There's also opportunity to strategize a bit.. Plunder the Townsite right away and leave the region later on if needed?.. or head out to Mystery Lake or Pleasant Valley in the hopes of big loot before the storms start to roll in more frequently...

And youβll be having to get your data published in the next issue of The Frozen Angler. ππ

Your toil for the progress of fishing science is admirable. π Were you using the outer fishing hut? Iβve been wondering if closer to the sea means more cohos. Seems like the hut in CH closest to the sea gets more cohos, but Iβm probably imagining things. Again. π

Always make and carry a few fishing tackle, as they are also your sewing back up. Super light and multi-use. Also - extra prybars make good ice hole smashers. Leave one in your favorite hut and save your knife and hatchet for other things. ππΊ

The Long Dark Art Thread

I like how the figure seems to look to the left. Despite the beauty and awe of the scenery, there may be danger... -

Quite true. Well done, @Humblewoodsman! I especially like the bridge scene (both versions π). -
Looking For Game Recommendations
Screenshot Pilgrim replied to Sherri's topic in General Discussions & Misc Topics
This might be an odd one for you, being a vehicles game, but Spintires: The Original Game has some of what you listed. The play areas are pretty good sized with uncloaking zones you have to travel to in order to reveal the overall scene on your map. And they don't make it easy to get anywhere. Mud, fallen trees, water, bogs, the lot.. The objectives are straight forward (get logs from one place to another), but also not easily done. The physics of heavy loads on tough terrain is there... but so are winches π (life savers). The other nice thing is that you can quit anywhere and it will set you right back into the mud where you left off the next time you start the game. -
Making a case for a jump mechanic that may appeal to Hinterland?
Screenshot Pilgrim replied to Gun Tech.'s topic in Wish List
Just for comparison, I'll mention the maps in TheHunter: Call of the Wild, which are huge and look pretty good, but where you can stroll through underbrush, fallen trees and branches at will; to the point where it also kind of kills the feeling of being out in the woods sometimes. For hunting, that stuff will blocks sight lines, so it's not all useless visuals, but it has no substance and can break emersion when moving through it. That said, I would welcome OP's suggestion for 'small jump' or 'vault' or 'step up' or 'climb' or whatever it would be called. My weirdo mind tends to make up little stories to explain away some of the snags (there's a nasty old nail sticking out of that), so I'm not necessarily all that bothered by them (I want it to be a struggle to navigate the island), but the suggested change makes sense all the same. The snags could still be there, but if you have the travel experience, you'll know just when to hit the key.
