  1. Just a question for further clarification - Does "ravaged" include fresh kills by wolves when the wolf has been scared off the carcass by the player (which are not visibly ravaged or cut open)?
  2. That alone is going to make a large number of my one-zone runs impossible since the acquisition of arrowheads, knives and hatchets is not possible 99% of the time on runs where the baseline resources are set to low (as in interloper) and one cannot access multiple zones to find a hammer to make forging possible or to access a forge itself (depending on the chosen zone for the run). Thanks HL.🤥 Hopefully, you'll compensate for this by adding an option to enable knives and hatchets separately in custom (similar to how guns can be enabled currently).
  3. Agree. That's one bug I really hate to see fixed. I was hoping they'd add an option to make a canoe out of them at some point instead.
  4. Found thisi for you. https://meddlingmedlars.wordpress.com/2016/05/14/rose-hip-tarts/
  5. One problem that I remember being brought up on another thread requesting this is the issue of keeping track of which non-skill (generic) books have been read. Without this sort of tracking being added for the 100s of non-skill books in the game or at least a cap on how many times a player could read non-skill books in general, it would be an unlimited supply of XP.
  6. @ManicManiacExactly - that's where the spray paint comes in... we just need to be allowed to put a match to it. 😀😀 (Sorry for quoting the wrong post.)
  7. I realized that and loved the cleaverness of your response BTW. I agree about the ambushes - particularly if it ambushes while sleeping in caves. I'm not one who really cares about the bear spear though. It's heavy and I don't really like the mechanic it uses in story mode... but something new and different just to ward of cougar attacks would be interesting, I think. A propane cannon would also be an "explosive" way to light a fire - with the appropriate chance of instant death, fo course. 😀
  8. However, you can pass time at any time in any place now just by calling it up on the "campfire" section of the wheel. It's in 1-hour increments, but you can cancel it earlier than that. If you let it run to the end of the hours you selected, it will also generate a save. Best not to do it when exposed, however. 😀 You don't need a bedroll or anything. I'm not really sure what you mean about gaining XP since there is no general "level up" in this game - only what is applied to specific skills when reading skill books or actually using those specific skills. There is no specific skill to level up "passing time" and I'm not sure what the buff would be for it if they added it. It could be that you're suggesting the random tips potentially provided by reading a book be associated with particular skills and provide a single point of XP to that random skill. Interesting thought in that case.
  9. Fair enough - but only that? https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/environment/plants-animals-ecosystems/wildlife/human-wildlife-conflict/staying-safe-around-wildlife/cougars
  10. Interesting thought. Begs the question as to what might deter cougars as well.
  11. Jack London's The Call of the Wild is a classic set in the Yukon. ETA: A true survival story in the Canadian north is The Last Voyage of the Karluk, by William Liard McKinlay. Karluk was ship that became trapped in the northern ice sheet in 1913. It was written by one of the few survivors of the ordeal. Along those same lines is Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage. It's about Ernest Shackleton's quest to be the first to the South Pole in 1914 and what happened to him and his crew after his ship became trapped in the ice. ETA2: Also Into the Wild, by Jon Krakaur - The tragic true story of Chris McCandless, a young man who ventured into the wilds of Alaska in 1992.
  12. So far, I've only found 2 spots - One on the pond in the Milton Basin just below the cave and one on the lower pond in Broken Railroad. It's fiddly, but when you're near suitable ice instead of getting the text message you see your hole appear (it may be red or green, just like when you're trying to place a fire or a snow shelter. The issue is that you can't just walk along with the interface open if you get the text message. You have to keep closing it and trying from fresh in a new spot. I think it's probably a bug (at least on the Xbox X), but I can't be sure. If it is a bug, it may be what's preventing it from working in more of the locations listed in the Wiki.
  13. It seems to have changed from the early days. I distinctly remember that the bedroll would decay per use because I spammed it to repair it when I was working on getting all my skills to Level 5. I had lots of cloth, but very few cloth clothes I could repair since I had diligently harvested any that I wasn't using as I worked my way through the world, so I found I could speed up the times the game would allow me to repair the bedroll by sleeping in it in short increments. I was curious so I just ran a quick test and it no longer seems to decay that way. I'm not sure the Wiki is correct either. I set a custom run with pilgrim settings but the decay rate was pushed to very high. My bedroll started at 100% and stayed there despite 6 short one-hour sleeps during the first night. It stayed at 100% until I went to sleep on the second night. On the second night, I used the bedroll for one 8-hour sleep; and the condition reduced to 99%. However, this does not coincide with the 2.4% decay rate (used) shown either. BTW, this was just a regular bedroll.
  14. I'd be in favour IF they actually contained some readable text (which I doubt will ever happen). It would be nice if the skill books actually game some tips about the skill while reading them as well (which I also doubt will ever happen). Otherwise, I'd rather just pass the time as it is now (since I can just pretend to myself that I'm reading as head canon) and not have to worry about carting around any more "book weight." More importantly, I would, however, like to be able to be able to get into a bed and read... and get the warmth bonus from the bed while doing so.
  15. I've had flying rabbits in Forsaken Airfield. I wonder if it's connected to the ptarmigans being able to fly away (the first killable mob that can fly)?
  16. That's very true. Also, it occurred to me that if DLC items showed up in Episode 5 (as I pondered above), they really wouldn't be exclusive DLC items in that people who had not paid for them by buying the DLC would suddenly have access to them in that Episode, even though they could not access them elsewhere in the game. This would muddy the waters even more and people who paid for the DLC might feel a bit "cheated." However, on the flip side, I suppose it might encourage people who did not buy the DLC to buy it previously. I'm sure that whatever HL does, Episode 5 will be amazing.
  17. The custom template for pilgrim has dysentry on, so I would assume that it is still on in the standard pilgrim mode as well. I remember getting it once a long time ago, but I honestly can't remember what settings I was using at the time or even whether it was on a standard difficulty or custom one (some sort of custom one would be the most likely though, even if it's just to select a particular map for a 50-day one-zone run).
  18. I have dropped a decoy, but not for many years - at least intentionally. I did notice that one of my recent 50-day runs gave me credit for one (not sure - must have been a wolf nearby when I dropped meat in front of my base). I haven't yet made a fishing lure or bait, though - if the more recent additions to the game can count towards this. 😀 ( I will probably get around to trying it out sometime soon.)
  19. It is also worth saying that, because story more progresses through set zones, some of the items might appear in Perseverance Mills and Episode 5 only (without the randomness of their spawns). In addition, similar to the bear spear, other unique items to Episode 5 might appear that will simply not be available in Survival Mode at all. So, we might be able to use a travois, find skillets, flour and oil for making pies and stews in Episode 5, but we still won't be able to use or find such items in Episodes 1 - 4 (similar to not being able to craft a satchel in story mode, which you mentioned on another thread).
  20. It's not impossible, but it is a lot of work for a small studio and their rationale for the split was, as stated, that keeping up with adding mechanics to both sides of the game was becoming overwhelming as the survival mode of the game grew well beyond their original expectations. Also, there is a feeling here that HL wants to move onto a new game, possibly a TLD 2, instead of being saddled to (and possibly being held back by) the now very old architecture of this one. I never said it was impossible and certainly never even implied the rude words you've put into my mouth in your post I've quoted here (saying it was a joke still doesn't make it right). In fact my original comment was that the only way I could see it happening was if they created a separate DLC for Wintermute specifically (and gave us a credit for already purchasing the Survival Mode DLC). It is still a BIG ask and it is UNLIKELY to ever happen. Honestly, I don't think perfect parity between survival mode and Wintermute is all a good thing. Variety is the spice of life - 2 different games for the price of one suits me fine.
  21. I hope so. I've been looking forward to it for some time now.
  22. To expand on @ajb1978,s post, here is the link to the Dev Diary in which Raph explains HL's decision to split Survival and Story Modes (i.e. creating the Survival Edition of the game, which does not include Witnermute). https://hinterlandforums.com/forums/topic/41847-april-developer-diary/
  23. 1. I would love for lantern oil to behave more like water - existing in only one container when in your inventory, but able to be dropped in amounts that produce either jerry cans or the smaller containers. This would require that lantern fuel is always at 100% condition, rather than the variations that currently exist. 2. I agree with @JerimiahSettle, the reason they don't stack is variations in condition, which cannot be eliminated as suggested for the lantern oil. 3. I would love to be able to "clean" interiors, preferably without needing console commands to do so. 4. I would prefer a scope on the rifle (but only because I prefer to use a rifle). Of course, a scope would not work with bows, so binoculars would do nicely. 5. Due to the public's general distaste for leg-hold traps IRL, I doubt HL will ever add one to the game. 6. Would be nice to at least select a recticle that is more visible. 7. The lack of a filled in map or a locator on the map is intentional. I would like to see them add a proper aviator's map as part of Will's equipment (just to give people the challenge of learning how to read them). Still, I doubt they'll do that either. 8. As scarce as leather seems to be, I've never felt that I've been close to running out of it. It doesn't have a huge amount of uses in the game and harvesting unwanted shoes and boots provides enough to make repairs as needed. Some people are anticipating that hides might be something we could trade with the trader for other "luxury" goods.
  24. I re-read the announcement and I did misunderstand it (assumed that since they were going to allow people to buy just Survival Mode in the form of the Survival Edition that they would also do the reciprocal situation and allow people who had no interest in the survival sandbox to purchase only Wintermute). I guess really what they did was reduce Wintermute to sort of a DLC status for the main game (which is now the survival mode). This information is contained in the original announcement of Tales of the Far Territory and it still means it is possible to own Tales and not own Wintermute, and vice verse (unless they backed off this original plan and are now only selling the full edition of The Long Dark with just Tales as DLC). I still don't see it happening though since it would probably require a lot of re-writing in Wintermute Episodes 1-4. I guess we'll find out when they eventually release Episode 5.
