  1. Congratulations @issabeepboop, well done. Limit yourself to about 2.2 lbs. bear meat per day to keep risk of parasites low. Stay safe my friend...looking forward to some details from your bear hunt.
  2. Seems to be a frequent issue with the hit-boxs since the update. For rabbits it seems best the select their tail or hind leg. Good luck my friend.
  3. Well said @theisaactrain, you have a good idea. Seems the ship was damaged and stranded at the rock outcropping for a while. After it was found by survivors, the hole in the hull, (which is now at ice level), would be enlarged for better access/egress. A manmade tarp roof at the hole would lock this theory, but even the barrels are arranged like a small base camp would be. ...that, or they had harpooned an Aurora Whale, and it was revived somehow and escaped the ships hold... Or maybe it is more an artistic choice by the artists who created the game. Stay safe my friends.
  4. You will have fun with this for sure @issabeepboop, it is an exciting "bravery test". One good way to get started is base at the Camp Office, then travel fairly light with some food and water and warm gear. Move to a hunting camp at the furthest Mystery Lake Cabin, (furthest end of lake). The reason this is a great starting point is that this lake cabin has a large view of the bear's pathing from a safe distance. Then when YOU feel ready, go and say hello to the bear. All the hunting techniques can be tested and you can see what the bear does and where it runs. Good luck my friend.
  5. Update; let me refill your coffee and tell you what was found by tracking the No Name Pond bear. Set out early in the morning and found no sign of the bear at the pond hunter blind. No bear at the pond bear den. Crows at the Lonely Cabin turned out to be a wolf from an earlier struggle. Searched and mapped the Clear-Cut Area with many wolves but no bear anywhere. Also, at the deer carcass the game once again “gifted a broken arrow”, (sort of like a “lost and found” area for lost arrows). Then on my way back from the Clear-Cut I pathed along the rock ledge along the edge of the rabbit grove at the Lonely cabin; (by exiting the Clear-Cut as close as possible to the destroyed lookout trail)… Success! Found a very loud group of crows which turned out to be my lost bear and my lost arrow. It seems the pond bear stayed in the area of the pond and the lonely cabin and did not enter the territory of the clear-cut bear. Stay safe my friends.
  6. Thank you @DarKube for that idea. My last playthrough I lost a few arrows and a bear carcass at the Clear Cut area. Eventually I did find the arrows on the ground at the edge of the Clear Cut but the game time had been a few days and there were crows and feathers but no bear carcass. Seems this is a common cost of early game bear hunting with the survival bow. Stay safe my friend.
  7. Early game bear hunt, asking for your experiences in where bears go to die. While looting the hunter blind at No Name Pond, the old bear walked from the bear cave moving directly towards the blind. Being only day 30 of a new “vanilla” Stalker run, my character was rested and drawing the survival bow produced a nice, steady white-dot reticle which fell centered on the bear’s brow line. I released the arrow and time slowed; the arrow arched slightly and struck the old bear directly in the face. The bear turned away and ran at full speed up the snow-covered hill and I listened as the sound of the bear continued in the direction of the lonely cabin. I finished looting the No Name Pond area and harvested a deer carcass before following the bear’s trail from the pond to the Lonely Cabin. I was a little surprised to find no sign of the bear and so I cooked the deer meat at the cabin and mapped the area with charcoal…no sign of the bear. I checked the sundial and as there was too much daylight remaining to waste it, I decided to walk back to my base at Trappers Homestead and eat and sleep there for the night. I mapped the pond with charcoal and did not find any sign of the bear at the Frozen brook, the pond, nor near the bear cave. So, warm your coffee and share with me your advice and experience finding bears after a bleed-out kill. This old cooking pot makes too much coffee for me alone and I would appreciate your insights as to where to search in the morning to find the bear carcass and my lost arrow. Many thanks in advance for any suggestions and help. Stay safe my friends.
  8. Good luck @Catlover. I am not a very experienced player but have learned not to get too excited about a new region and spawn-in without any gear. Go there prepared and work your way up to the rabbit grove surrounded by rock ledges and guarded by a row of scrub-brush. Stay safe my friend.
  9. What I remember of the Signal Fire is that you reach a steep walking path from a cave. I was able to mountain goat past some scrub-brush that was blocking the access to the signal fire, (I did not find a hatchet on my playthrough). Then at the signal fire the loot was the hammer not the hatchet...so my only option was to deploy the rope and escape; as I was trapped by the scrub-brush and could not go back the way I came. One of my planned future missions is to try again but bring a hatchet with me from another region. There is a map of the basic ice caves and foot paths and log bridges; you can google the map as "HRV_full_map". I hope this helps you. Good luck my friend.
  10. Welcome @t1gerfang. The survivor in you should use logic to determine that the climbing rope must be deployed from the top of the Ravine; and therefore must be from a location accessible from the area above the Ravine climbing point. There are constant updates to the game and spawn locations so here is a helpful hint and a related forum post from earlier this Summer. Minor hint: There is much RR track to explore between the tunnel from Mystery Lake and the tunnel to Coastal Highway. Minor spoilers / hints, (click hidden content below to see discussion from related forum post): Stay safe my friend.
  11. Good morning @Sus-wolf. As you may be aware, the noise from tossing a stone will have the short range effect that you are seeking. Preditor wildlife may investigate the sound and deer may be startled and flee from the sound. Both are useful for moving wildlife. As for getting the moose and bear to turn around and face in your direction, there is the option of standing/stepping from a crouched position. The ability to add a sound like a call or clearing your throat to attract the animal is a good thought for an addition to the game. Stay safe my friend.
  12. Good evening @DrZ. While crouched by a campfire in Broken RR this morning...I was chatting-up a couple lazy wolves. I was thinking of this forum topic and so I put the "White Dot Reticle" on the nearby wolf; I then hit space-bar, selected weapons category, and selected the rifle; for what it is worth, the reticle remained on the wolf despite all the movement of the mouse within the radial menu. This was a surprise to me, but it appears the radial menu pointer is separated from the game reticle pointer. I gave your kind reply a +1 for it's constructive and polite tone. How do you like the concept of adding code to allow selecting a primary and/or favorite weapon or tool within the inventory? Stay safe my friends.
  13. I find myself back into TLD game this year following several excellent updates... The OP by @DrZ is a great point, selecting the "Preferred Primary Item" has been discussed here in many forms. My 2 cents would be to try resetting the rabbit snare by putting it into Inventory and then selecting it from Inventory, (very slow). Compare that with the ability to quickly take it from the ground and place it from the camp-craft section of the Radial Menu. This simple item has made me begin to look for other benefits of the Radial Menu Options, and there are many others as well. Now if we could just light a fire using the logical choice of the "Lit Flare" which is in my hand...Thankfully the awesome developers at Hinterland continue to make so many excellent refinements. Stay Safe my friends.
  14. Welcome @VicioisMalicious...my advice is to enjoy several short survival mode games while learning the basics. These "disposable early games" are a great way to learn and it can be very fun when the game lasts just a few minutes longer each playthrough. Cold and Wind-chill kill quickly/so finding shelter is always a priority. The game maps are only new to new players; and you can only be new to the game once so enjoy the challenge my friend!
  15. This idea reminds me of another forum discussion of herbal medicine. In the other discussion it was explained that the RL remedy for parasites is a tea made from birchbark...so if birchbark were added as a (4th) medicinal herb in-game, it could respawn with the sticks following a strong wind storm.
  16. This is basic stuff, but it is very useful. We know that each type of clothes has an inner layer slot and an outer layer slot, (inner layer goes near the picture of the survivor in the menu). It is important to noticed that you may wear a vest under a jacket but never a vest over a jacket. So if you are playing early game and equip a jacket on the inner layer slot, (by mistake), then you can not combine with the down-vest. A simple concept once you understand, but it has fooled me more than once as I rush to choose the best clothes for warmth.
  17. Second moose hide satchel can not be equipped. Moose cloak is heavy, but is amazingly effective. Best of luck to you, oh great moose slayer.
  18. Yes correct @stratvox...it is TWM; first nook on the right as you move from game spawn-location and walk to the river leading to lake and cabin.
  19. Welcome to the forum @Old Nick, and no, there is no requirement for coffee or a stim. The long rope climbs do require a lot of stamina. So as with everything in TLD, it is important to plan: Sleep to assure you are fully rested, (stay awake late enough by preparing for and planning your calm morning climb). Pickup the important gear and do not get too overweight in your backpack, (no harm leaving a water and some firewood). Take a nice morning stroll to the base of the ravine climbing rope, (make final preparations / no work / no delays). Drink to reduce your encumbrance, (feel free to also use a coffee if you planned and have one ready). Drop sticks until you reduce your weight below "the red-line encumbrance limit", (a full backpack is not a problem). Climb the first 80% and you will notice a snowy ledge, (you must look at it and when the word LEDGE appears click to step onto ledge). Enjoy the view and take screenshots, (check your stamina after a couple minutes to verify you are recovered / full sprint gauge). Finally, climb the top 20% and move to a safe location to warm-up and celebrate your success! Ravine screenshot at dusk; stay awake and enjoy the ravine at night while completing all work and planning for the morning climb. In the event you wake to find the weather has changed to a storm, stop a moment and develop a new plan. In the event you are not able to plan ahead, then yes, you may use a stim to gain added stamina to escape the situation. Best of luck my friend.
  20. It's time to grab a copy of this file for the Hinterland Team. Log Location in Windows In Windows, open File Explorer At the top of the window, switch to the View tab Go to the Show/Hide section and check the Hidden Items box On the left side, scroll down to This PC and click on the C drive Navigate to the following folder: C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\LocalLow\Hinterland\TheLongDark (Your Windows username will be the name of the USERNAME folder) Inside TheLongDark folder you will find a file named output_log.txt . This is your session log.

  22. Welcome to the forum @timimt. It is difficult to help without more information. Was TLD game previously working properly on your PC? Does your PC meet the minimum game requirements? Are the video drivers updated? Is your version of 'DirectX' updated? Which OS are you using? We would all be happy to help. Please provide us a bit more detail. MINIMUM: OS: Windows XP Processor: Dual-Core Intel i5 CPU @ 2GHz+ Memory: 4 GB RAM Graphics: Intel 4xxx Series w/ 512MB VRAM or better Storage: 7 GB available space Sound Card: Any on-board chip will work. The 'Steam Version' of 'The Long Dark' is very stable, please do not worry my friend.
  23. The bullish character with more years might be a desired character IRL and in game: All skills begin at level 3. More grumbling, less whining, and best comments, (walked to TWM elementary school everyday). Stamina depletes and recovers 10% slower, (But is equal to base character). Requires less sleep to recover condition. Add a 10% buff to fishing, hunting, and crafting. Knows stories from lore for all regions of Great Bear. The idea from the OP may have much to offer.
