This will probably be the last chime in I make in this thread but one of the more compelling reasons I saw explained (I think it s in the same article perhaps linked earlier) Imagine you're a developer with an existing game you are actively developing more content for. Your market research (mostly ppl shouting at you on the internet) has indicated a huge customer base could exist for this game if you ported it to another platform - lets say for the Switch or PS4 and even 30% of your existing customers would consider buying again for this platform. Now you spend 12 months porting your game because there's a huge amount of work to make it run on there and you want the game to live up to it's reputation. It's ok though because by all indications it looks like it will sell well once released and you can recoup the investment. A few months before the announced launch a technology company has come up with a way for your existing game to be hosted in the cloud and played on ANY device including phones AND the platform you are currently porting to. Your publishers for the new platform can't make the numbers work on this metric - half your projected customers for it dissappear overnight - and they pull out of the deal. Now I've just made this up in my head but it's based off stuff in the article that ppl porting their games for other devices are now getting really nervous and need to recoup their investments so they literally cant afford for their game to be on GFN. This may or may not be a rationale for Hinterlands decision but the point is there are probably dozens if not more legitimate business decisions that weigh on any company trying to navigate disruptive technology. Its very easy to sit back and say " They should just do X" or "They should've done Y" as far as I'm aware Hinterland have not said "We're upset and our game will never be on GFN because we're petty" they've simply stated as a business they resere the right to decide... and now is the time for things like negotiations, market research (inlcuding listening to the community), financial analysis etc, they havent had the chance up till now because no negotiation was on the table, it was just Nvidia going about it's own plan. Now dont get me wrong the idea of GFN sounds facinating and probably 10 years from now if not sooner most of us will be playing that way (except maybe Australia with our terribly internet) and for that very reason alone is why the groundwork for how rights management and development strategies work for it needs to happen now and be negotiatied in good faith.

While I can understand the reasonable gut feel regarding ownership of content I think you're kind of missing the quite good point/s that @stratvox and @jeffpeng raised regarding IP and the enforcement of that. Basically this is whole new ground regarding how content is able to be streamed to you and Nvidia is making money from it. What we have as a setup at the outset may seen reasonable (your licence playing in the cloud that hinterland already got paid for) but that might not always be the case or nuance of difference might come up. If studios dont enforce their rights at ground zero on this they may have effectively waived their right by not enforcing them and in future lose out as the playing field changes. Also keep in mind that people will still lean on Hinterland for tech support for issues that may arise from playing the game on a VM or for percieved bugs arising from latency of streaming, internet issues, GFN glithces or downtime. It's not unreasonable to assume that Hinterland and others should receive some royalty from this to cover additional costs and for quite frankly being the core part of a product GFN are offering. Much like songs played on the radio generate revenue (via advertising) and have to pay royalties or licences for the songs they play regardless of whether ppl own the song at home. In short if someone was making $ off something you made and you weren't receiving any share of that revenue you'd probably feel a bit ripped off especially if you get all of the problems from it and none (or minimal) of the benefits.
  3. you shouldn't need to destroy anything but look very carefully and deliberately in corners etc. Well done on using the flare to better your position. In the camp office the mag lens can be behind a bookshelf downstairs or I usually find it next to the desk upstairs behind two small crates. In the lookout I think its under a shelf but I could be wrong.... I think it can also spawn at trappers behind the couch.... all of this is from memory though and I dont go look at loot tables at all.
  4. your closest matches are probably in the cave in the lower rope climb area between Trappers cabin and Milton. So from Trappers go through the long cave, exit out into the Milton side climb down one little rope, stay away from one potential wolf, walk into the cave and check the backpack. But other than that there should definitely be a mag lens either in the Camp Office or the lookout. You need to look very carefully, behind and under things. like bookshelves, crates etc. Dont forget you can start fires with flares. There's also a possible firestriker not far from camp office in the Lake Overlook Cave.
  5. especially as so many of us read the rope as a clue that there would be a shortcut into here via a tie off and there was so many tantalising areas that looked perfect for one. It was almost perfect level design.... except it wasnt
  6. Seems like an epic missed opportunity, level design and gameplay wise, especially considering the rope.... who in their right mind is going to take the rope from there all the way to the ravine?

To be fair, I kind of think the getting the code from the top part before being able to open the workshop matched my expectations enough as a "two-part environmental puzzle" Tho my guess beforhand was that you;d have to trigger a log fall from one map that makes log bridge in the other area allowing you to join the two zones.
  8. Well I had a big old scout around including carrying the rope about during an aurora and came up with a whole bunch of nothing. Like a lot of others I think for *anything* to count as a shortcut it would really need to be somewhere into the final 2 buildings and my bet would be the one that is split in half. I even stood on the damn winch part during and aurora but nothing came up. I did most of this current testing on a pilgrim startup and fluffy is in the workshop, but although sounding agro doesnt do anythign....however after enough time of being in there with her she disappears till you leave and come back.... I dont think you can read too much into that being a clue about a way out... I think it's just some backend code resetting her and waiting to be triggered again. If there is a shortcut to the workshop (and I hope there is at least one day) then it hasnt been a particulary fun puzzle to solve so far.

So I've been doing a bunch of 'science' on the timberwolves with some random interloper starts as well as another longer term survivor in the area and I've captured a bunch of bugged out behaviour with the wolves. Stuff like teleporting from ground level to higher areas in the cannery and some very deadly bugs with the demoralisation behaviour i.e. the bar resetting right after you've scared them off. All captured on video, timecode links below. I've also listed a few other that might not be bugs but I'm fairly certain I had a wolf instantly close the gap on its pathfinding to me. i.e. not there behind me at all turn around and back again and it's there. Click for each video telporting wolf from ground level up onto entry walkway to cannery teleporting wolf from ground level to dock level outside cannery locked entrance timberwolf biting through solid wall. wolf biting from a couple of meters away quick close demoralisation bugs.large chunk of demoralisation happens, then pack gets demoralised, then instant reset on pack morale. Demoralised wolves still being agressive, ...pack not dispersing and getting morale back a third time the next morning (maybe not a bug but who knows at this point)

Even though I suggested it I was only half serious and tbh I can't really think the dev team would be interested in adding crafting explosives.... however I think having some sort of functionality for the gunpowder for interloper would be good, so perhaps I'll revise my idea to be that we could be able to craft flares (both red and blue ones) out of gunpowder. That way you have a somewhat renewable source of blue flares to protect you at least from the timberwolves. I did see one spoiler somewhere that the tool bench might have some extra alure for repairing so there might be some incentive for Lopers to venture into Bleak Inlet beyond the desire to explore or go thrill seeking.
  13. I'm thinking with the ability to make gunpowder surely an exploding arrowhead would be the logical conclusion or maybe at least be able to make a firecracker and throw it at the wolves to scatter them for a minute.
  14. Cheers, I thought there must be somewhere to get into but was panicking a little bit. I almost ran past the rope till the tool tip came up. I was thinking there would be some stairs or something I could climb up but as I was running about I was like "of course! this place is meant to be a trap" The game was trying very very hard to kill me, I did make a lot of mistakes and now that I have a little understanding of the map I would've done a bunch of things differently that might have made it easier on ym resources. I dont think I'm going to be so wasteful with my arrows for starters
  15. Battle of wills maybe? In the previous episode I went toe to tow with them on the ice which also went about as good as you might expect. I've got a lot of arrows to find if I live long enough to go get them.
  16. Well last night I had the most intense gameply I've ever had in The Long Dark. I went in to Bleak Inlet with my +65 day Interloper (actually a naked challenge loper - no prefab clothes allowed). I'd avoided knowing anything about the zone beforehand as much as could so the only info I knew was what was in the teasers and a minor spoiler I picked up from the episode titles of some people's youtube channels. Suffice to say I did get my butt handed to me but it was pretty epic by my usual careful & methodical standards. The real fun starts just before the 30 min mark for anyone who wants to skip to the pain. * caution spoilers galore in the video *
  17. I was in Utah at Park City just outside Salt Lake City. Where I am at the moment its forecast to be 40C today so 104F, I'm remebering the snow with a great deal of fondness right now
  18. @tulkawen can you post about what machine specs you have? Sometimes especially with laptops or desktop machines with integrated graphics card the game can be accidentally running off the crappy video card not your good one.
  19. The idea was that its a very slim random chance once in a while in your game world to come across someone else's body. you'd probably be lucky to find one.
  20. What I've always wanted in this game is that when you die, your dead body and its loot gets uploaded and in someone elses random game your body (and a portion of your loot) appears where you died as a new frozen corpse. They can perhaps also investigate your journal and find out all the places you went and whatever notes you left.
  21. Heya Seems like the playlists defaults in youtube - well at least through the Youtube Studio beta makes them newest first. I might go back through and reset them to order by release date. Might much you up a bit if you;re halfway through a list is all. Thanks for picking this up btw
  22. Well done for giving recording a go. I found it a bit difficult to begin with trying to talk and concentrate at the same go. Shame about the lag. what are you using to record at the moment? do you know the quality settings and are recording to your fastest hard drive if you have multiple? I found I had to drop the capture resolution to 720P and frame rate to only 30fps to not drop game performance when I started. Good luck with the adventures - I subscribed to your channel so hopefully you get the performance stuff sorted and record some more gameplay.
  23. Thanks for the shout out @SlippedGear The list is a good one, basically all the people I enjoy following on youtube too. I learned a lot from those names as well. Special shout out to Turkey and Pest who I really got the most info of early which made me better at the game.
  24. Incidentally I think the realities of the case show that it probably isn't as frivolous as first appears, a lot of media of the time may have in fact helped create that idea. In reality a 79 year old lady (who wasn't driving at time, but was a passenger in a parked car at the McDonalds) got 3rd degree burns which required serious hospitialisation and surgery from the wikipedia article about it: "Liebeck was taken to the hospital, where it was determined that she had suffered third-degree burns on six percent of her skin and lesser burns over sixteen percent.
