His first couple words in this video had me splitting a gut. "Welcome back everybody, to the Canadian Death Simulator" :D

Well like you said earlier, he keeps playing on Interloper and he doesn't really seem to know what he is doing. So under those conditions it really pretty much is, "A Canadian Death Simulator."

I tried to do that too but I can't figure out how to change that in the options.

I think you go to settings/options....then audio....then lower the "voice" slider all the way down...

I keep them on because I am lonely as it is in the game. Also occasionally their constant complaining helps remind me to feed them/give them something to drink if you get distracted...

Haha, yep but I have to admit that way back when, I died the same way :D I didn't even know then that you could die inside shelter so I just slept all night in Mountaineer's with a three hr fire, died. Live and learn.....or maybe I should say, die and learn 9_9

Not to continue derailing the thread, but I did too. I actually froze to death harvesting a deer, because a blizzard started (as they often do when harvesting in the beginning).

That being said, if you listen to the last several minutes of the video in the Mountaineer's hut,  he states that he's worried about sleeping there, because "that's how he died last time." Then proceeds to set the sleep timer for like 10 hours straight with no fire, instead of sleeping in smaller increments and/or going out and getting some wood first....

So more evidence of being a knucklehead: "Failure to learn from previous deaths..."

Btw, was that you? Hahaha. That was awesome. I knew I could shimmy down the cliff and I've done it many, many times but I was too stubborn to go back down. Darn bear. A big storm lets loose right after bear gone and I just ran up the opposite hillside to those little cabins up there by the lookout double-climb. That's where I am right now but I quit for the night. I want to head over to FM and be there for after Wintermute launch.

Nope, not me lol. I just did a search on YouTube for "The Long Dark descending cliff" and found that. I watched it and decided it was appropriate to show how to get down a cliff in the game. I wasn't trying to be mean, but he was sort of a knucklehead head....as he also died by sleeping in the Mountaineer's Hut without a fire at the end of the episode. I like to think I am better at the game than that guy, lol...

  5. Where there's a will, there's a way. If I have to choose between a cliff and a bear mauling, I'd choose the cliff every time.

I recommend taking off clothes so you don't tear them, and do your best to shimmy down the rocks. As long as you can find a path that has terrain under you at all times, i.e. not a cliff that bends backwards under you and twords the cliff...meaning no dead space with no terrain and dead air, you can make it. Even slight drops of a foot or two is ok. You may sprain something and possibly take a little condition damage....but that is better than a 90% condition loss most likely(and bleeding, and sprains, and torn clothes). Plus if you go through him and get mauled, there is no guarantee he won't still be blocking your path after the mauling....meaning you are dead for sure...

I'd just look for the safest looking path down the cliff. You can even move sideways along cliffs as long as you keep the directional button twords hugging the cliff...You won't just fall off a cliff unless you hit a gap where you are no longer touching cliff....then you fall till you hit something solid again....

Here watch this video of this knucklehead who ended up having to go down a VERY steep cliff as inspiration for what can be accomplished in the game with cliff hugging....

Spending time in the Riken wheelhouse definitely reduces cabin fever risk.  And the wind can still blow your fire out there... be careful. :)

Tee hee....I'm on Voyager, slept in small chunks and prayed for no blizzard...had no fire up there both nights I chanced it.

My bedroll was in good condition and I was wearing my warmest set of clothes with like a +28°C warmth bonus...

Slept in the back wall away from the door....mostly wind shielded.

    Drank a hot drink too...

So at it's peak 28°C (clothes) +6°C (bedroll have bear hides curing back home) +4°C warming up (2hours)=38°C warmth bonus. I took my chances. I know a blizzard would have been no bueno, but I kept checking my feels like temp and I stayed in the positive both nights....even during the middle of the night. Woke up to -1°C the next morning...

  7. Ok, well thank you both @Scyzara and @Patrick Carlson! I fully understand the push for story mode, and had no expectations that this was being remedied in the next month. I just wanted to verify our suggestions were both heard and being taken into consideration at least.

I have absolutely no problem with cabin fever, or any of the other afflictions in principle, and I am not looking for cabin fever to be removed. I understand why it was implemented and agree it is needed to stop a specific type of gameplay.

However the type of gameplay being addressed didn't include getting productive things done in the game like forging, crafting, sewing, and harvesting. It was just staying indoors all day sleeping, eating, and moving the game clock without accomplishing anything productive in the game.

I would like to see cabin fever not penalizing people who are attempting to play the game properly, and performing work safely inside a building suitable for such work.

If this is going to remain as is, I suggest moving all forges and workbenches outdoors at least, or adding multiple outdoor locations for those work activities...

I just slept technically outdoors in the bridge on the Riken hoping to not get cabin fever while forging 30 arrowheads, and I don't even know if the bridge of the Riken counts as outdoors. It does have a door you can't close open to the elements....so I hope it is outdoors...

A big +1 for these two suggestions.

The second aspect has been suggested numerous times in the past and I still support it wholeheartedly because it would imo counteract a lot of the current arbitrary gameplay choices one needs to make to avoid cabin fever. (It's e.g. not very intuitive to craft your fur clothes or melt water outside on purpose at temperatures around -35°C like I usually do on Interloper).

I also like the first idea a lot. Might encourage players to keep a bit on the move in a way that feels rather natural. At least more natural than spending your nights inside caves to compensate indoor clothing crafting times.

@Patrick Carlson : I think this poll shows quite impressively that the majority of players isn't really happy with the implementation of cabin fever in its current state. Could you please forward the suggestions mentioned above (or other ideas from cabin fever-related threads made in the past) to the Dev team? Even if it's already to late to ask for big changes regarding current mechanics before the release of Wintermute, it's definitely something the team might want to focus on in the long run.

So did we ever get an answer on this?

I was only wondering because I agree with what is being said about not counting time spend doing important activities like, mending clothes, reading research books, and crafting things.

The way I understood it, cabin fever was implemented simply to stop people from just clocking up days survived on the leader boards by hibernating in doors all day not doing anything.

It shouldn't be here to grief people trying to actually play the game the correct way...

So is there any chance it will be tweaked in the near future?

  9. I feel this thread is a good example of how even when someone attempts to agree with the point they "thought" Carbon was trying to make, Carbon is still contrary...

I am wondering if he/she is an Aquarius. They are the most argumentative of all the signs. I had a buddy growing up who was an Aquarius, he liked to argue just for argument's sake. Like they just enjoy debate.

I find arguing tedious....especially when your intent was to actually agree with the person who is now arguing with you. Doing that is just a waste of your time/life.

I'm not trying to start a fresh argument, I am just making an observation after reading many threads with Carbon arguing with others in the thread. I read the comments in this thread and was like HOLY CRAP, even when someone attempts to agree with Carbon....they are still wrong...

    Snapping the necks of rabbits.

Before you write me off as a serial killer in the making, let me explain.
Just after the Faithful Cartographer update came out, I picked up a handful of rocks (because I could) and threw them (because I could).  Then I read the description and noticed that it said it would stun a small animal.  Just so happened that I was in one of the rabbit spawn areas.  I tried doing some realistic throws and missed every time.  So I said to hell with it and just ran up to the first rabbit I saw and started throwing rocks.  I was really surprised when I hit one...not nearly as surprised as when I picked it up.
I was confused as to whether or not I'd actually killed it and then the animation continued past the initial scoop off the ground.  Now I'm staring into the face of this rabbit wondering, "Why is my hand behind its head?  Am I going to pet this thing?  That doesn't seem right..."  And then the release/kill options popped up.  (Did I mention I'm playing with my child sitting next to me?)  I'm still a bit frustrated from earlier, it's only been a few seconds, so I'm not about to release my prize.  So I choose "Kill"...  And my son screamed.  In fairness, so did I...just not for the same reason.  (His was disgust, mine was morbidly dark amusement.)  So now I'm in my living room with my son covering his face in disgust... and I'm cackling like a mad woman.  I did not expect that.

Well, that took an unexpected turn...
    So did his neck.

My girlfriend is horrified by the rabbits. I'm like, "Hun it's a survival game, it's him or me...."

It's true, the bunny is food. Sometimes I miss a lot and I expend calories chasing rabbits around and throwing rocks at them. When I finally catch one...or three...I'm not going to just let them go. They will get in me belly!

I want to know why the moron in-game doesn't lash things down better, to avoid making so much noise.

Valid question. Maybe we could use spare cloth to wrap clanky items and move quieter....

Be careful what you eat! Getting sick from eating low condition food items can be the end of your game. My personal rule is that until you reach cooking level 5, any food or drink under 50% condition doesn't get consumed (yellow text with a star). This is probably too extreme, but I would rather be safe than sorry. Food poisoning is treated with antibiotics and rest.

Not to cause an argumet or overly complicate things, I have been living by the information I read on the two Wiki's. The Gamepedia one is more out of date, so I prefer the other Wiki. That Wiki has this to say about food poisoning:

"Food poisoning can be randomly assigned at any time when a food or drink item is consumed. Uncooked meat and lower condition foods are at the highest risk, while good quality canned or processed foods, except for Can of dog food, are some of the safest consumables. Soda cans and all other beverages will never cause food poisoning. Furthermore, items with a displayed condition of at least 75% will also never cause food poisoning. There are also several food items that are completely safe until their condition goes below 20%, these items being: beef jerky, pork and beans, condensed milk, salty crackers, energy bars, MREs, pinnacle peaches, and tomato soup. Suffering from food poisoning will never kill the player but will severely weaken them if left untreated. While in effect, condition will not be restored and will rapidly drop until your condition reaches 15%."

So low condition soda cans allegedly never make you sick, I have tested this on myself. I have consumed numerous sodas below 20 condition and have not gotten sick.

I have also been testing the other claims about the canned foods, MREs, beef jerky, crackers, and the like and have consumed many of those items below 50, but above 20 and have not yet gotten sick....so far.

Just watch out for Dog Food, this isn't Mad Max, even high condition dog food can make you sick....that one is always a gamble. (I still eat it in real life and in the game though)

I just wanted to clarify in more detail so new players are not just throwing a bunch of potentially safe foods away because the condition is lower than 50. Especially the sodas....on Interloper every calorie counts....

Anyway....this information was more pertinent before Carbon edited his original post to include the information I just listed, lol....

While some aspects of the combined sound somewhat reflects what I am carrying, I don't have tin cups and cowbells hanging off my bag. I guess the volume doesn't bother me as much as the number of layers and types of sounds present while walking.

Rofl, true. To clarify I was agreeing with you all....it is a bit much. We need to be able to hear predators around us. We make an awful lot of noise trying to be quiet currently....

  14. I noticed the clanking even changes depending on what you are carrying. Lots of sticks sounds like drum sticks clicking together. Lots of jerry cans and there is the sound of gasoline sloshing around in a metal gas can. The lantern is the most annoying, the lantern often makes the pots and pans clanking sound which is the hardest to hear over and sometimes it confuses me that maybe a dog barked....especially if my stomach is growling on top of it...

    What I noticed....
