  1. I actually haven't used a flashlight on an aurora wolf yet, as I just got into Episode 2 and then stopped playing because of the flare cache bug, but A LOT of people have been complaining about the flashlight doing jack. So either all the wolves are broken, or some people aern't doing it right. That's what made me consider trying shining the light on the ground in front of them....maybe that's the issue? If that doesn't work either, then like I said some wolves are pretty jacked up. Like not responding to bait, and stopping when reaching the edge of your field of vision....
  2. Yes, I'm not sure how long they plan on waiting to add more to clothes crafting. It's been out for quite a while now. I am fairly concerned they are not planning on adding more crafting options at all. If that is indeed the case, hopefully modders will make clothes crafting the way it should have been already. Including lowering cured hides weights, and lowering crafted clothing weights.
  3. Some wolves in the game are very badly bugged. Also, I would make sure I was using the high beam, and I would also try shining it on the ground in front of the wolf, not just at it. They don't like to cross into spotlights on the ground....
  4. I agree with @JAFO's synopsis. On Pilgrim I am sure you will find at least one bedroll on almost EVERY map.... It's ok to tear one up for cloth if you really needed cloth to fix your clothes, and you were on a map with almost no cloth. Like Forlorn Muskeg for instance.... So there will be more opportunities to claim a spare. As far as "provoking" wolves and bears on Pilgrim. I'm not positive if aiming counts on Pilgrim, as I haven't tried aiming at a wolf or bear on Pilgrim.....because I don't play much Pilgrim.....but to be safe I would not aim or fire any rocks or other weapons (except maybe the flare gun) at wolves or bears. Unless you are planning on killing one, and you are prepared to be attacked if they don't die after aiming/shooting at them. (i.e. stripped naked and dropped your one remaining bedroll and clothes on the ground, lol) Like Jafo said, since attacks can sometimes randomly damage one or more items of clothing, if the damage takes that item to zero condition, it is then "ruined." Ruined clothing cannot be repaired, but it can be harvested for cloth still...
  5. Ok, guess we'll just keep trying to wait patiently. Sorry, I am not great at it, I have an impulse control disorder. Waiting a week without bringing it up again was the best I could manage.... (That's actually REALLY good for me.... I mean making it a whole week. That took a lot of self control....)
  6. That statement is accurate....and myself and others have discussed it numerous times already I'm sure.... I remember @Miniwizard spent a lot of time discussing ways to improve the food system in the game, primarily due to the ability to eat WAY too much at once, with no side effects..... If he was still vocal in the forums, I imagine he would be a supporter of this "gluttony concept."
  7. I was just referring to the minimum amount of rabbit I would eat if I was running on empty and wanted to sleep for a good 10 hours. Myself and probably many others don't typically eat from 0 calories to 2400 calories in one go.... I usually eat a couple things here and there in the game, as one does in real life....except you have to eat far more in the game, far more regularly to not starve in the game.... This idea of the OP would address the ability to go from 0 to 2400 calories in one go. Something I don't think many people in real life could accomplish eating normal food one would eat. I mean I guess you could do it if you ate high nutrition energy bars in real life, or drank a few "weight gainer" shakes that body builders sometimes drink, but normally people don't strive to eat 2400 calories in one go...Unless they wish to be obese.... Now that I think of it, in real life with fast food options, it's probably not THAT hard to hit 2400 calories in one go. If you are able to put away a couple Woppers or Big Macs with a large fry, and a milkshake. I could probably do that, but that would be one of those times I would be physically distressed after eating, and not be able to jog for 6-8 hours like the OP was eluding to...
  8. Not sure about the three days bit though. I AM a glutton and regularly eat ONE big meal a day....usually dinner. When I over do it and eat an amount that makes me look pregnant, and my stomach hurts and I feel like I want to puke, this feeling typically dissipates in about 6-8 hours, and I'm ready to eat a delicious bag or Bordeaux cookies before bed.... If I go to bed and sleep for 8-10 hours typically I wake up fine. It's not really possible to eat so much it puts you out of commission for three days....that's a ridiculous amount. I have NEVER eaten so much that I can't eat the next day, or HAVE to eat less the next day, the stomach processes food much faster than that. The cure should be to NOT eat anymore for the next 6-8 hours. The game could just remove the eat button until your "gluttony" "passes" if you get my drift.... Also the game requires you to eat animal meat by the kilogram in order to survive, which is already obscene. When I over do it when I overeat, it's usually because I DID eat a kilogram of food. Two plus pounds of food in one sitting is the max one can eat for a majority of people. When eating rabbits in this game you often have to eat TWO kilograms of rabbit or over FOUR pounds of rabbit....which is a human feat I have never witnessed....and my dad weighs 320 pounds, and he's Italian. I've seen the man put away some food in my lifetime, but it's NEVER been 4 to 5 pounds of food....in one sitting.... PS The "hidden status" the OP mentioned that seems to be confusing some people, is the "malnourished" status that someone discovered recently. I don't believe it's listed in the Wikis. You get it by not eating ANYTHING for 24 hours in game. A thing I am sure most people playing NEVER do. Most people playing the game eat at least ONCE a day....usually before bed to regain lost condition from not eating all day... I believe he was referring to that and some of you misinterpreted what he was saying as stating gluttony, which he just thought of was already in the game....which it isn't...
  9. Nice, you have some amount of creative writing ability! I do not, I am a scientist and seem to only be good at reporting exactly what transpires without artistic embellishment. I am good at lab reports. My mother actually wrote all my English papers and poetry assignments in high school and college. I just don't seem to have that creative right side of my brain working, I seem to be all left brain. I've always been fascinated by people who can just pull fictional stories out of their butt like that! It's very cool! If you continue you could use The Long Dark as your muse, and actually turn the happenings in the game into material for stories. Others have done this already, but yours seems better to me so far... I'm pretty sure some aspects of autism are due to inactivity of portions of the right brain. I have read scientific papers about people receiving severe trauma to portions of the right hemisphere of their brain, and then behaving socially as if they have Aspergers....like over-sharing, failure to pick up on social queues, etc. Some people due to SEVERE seizures undergo hemispherectomies sometimes, and they remove a whole half of their brain. When they remove the right half....again sometimes there is social dysfunction....almost like high functioning autism..... Sorry I just over-shared.....that's what your post made me think of... Welcome to the forums! Lol!
  10. Because the ski mask can only be worn on the inner slot.... So if you want the ski mask's wind chill bonus, you can't wear another hat over it. You have to wear it by itself sacrificing stacking a warmth bonus from another hat. Which is something that should be revisited as it's silly...ski masks are pretty stretchy, you could probably wear it over another cap if you wanted to.... Also the wool toque doesn't cover your face, back of your head, or your neck. A hat really only covers about 30-40% of your head, face, and neck. So the ski mask is still pretty much covering a majority of your head even with a hat over the top of it. Also I don't really understand how the wind isn't also blocked by a second layer of clothing. If they don't want the windchill bonus to stack, it should at least default to the highest value of two items.... So the wind blows right through the outer layer because it's crappy for wind.....how does it then blow through the second layer as if it isn't present at all? Should it at least have been slowed down a little by the outer jacket even if it isn't a windbreaker or a light shell designed to block wind? They treat the inner jacket like it doesn't exist as far as wind goes if something else is over it.....it will still block the wind from hitting your body if it's worn over your body.....wouldn't it? I guess I just don't get it.... It seems like just another silly Hinterland game mechanic to me....because they didn't want stacking clothes to be OP and defeat the weather completely.... I think defaulting to the highest windchill bonus per slot regardless of slot would make sense too...
  11. I use a PS4 controller through Steam to play simply because I prefer having all the buttons for a game at my fingertips, instead of all over a giant keyboard I can't reach or remember where all the buttons are.... I have small hands....like Trump.... So you see what I mean about using the journal with thumb-sticks? It needs to be paused. I am not going to risk dying because it takes me half a game day of standing in the snow....or even in a building, trying to type notes into the journal with two thumb sticks...
  12. I agree the new "appear as you go: blood trail mechanic mixed with poor animal pathing is fail. If they wanted to add the new blood trail mechanic, they should have fixed injured animal pathing beforehand. This was another poorly planned change on their part. I don't understand why they make constant little changes to everything....like this blood trail thing, and hiding the scent bars on the HUD, but they won't spend time actually improving things we want improved like being able to craft a hat. It's like they complain about not having enough time to program all our ideas, but they spend a tremendous amount of time reprogramming things that were fine in the first place.... How many times have they rebuilt the whole HUD/UI from scratch since the game started development? Look at all these new changes we made! Yeah, we didn't ask for any of those changes.....thanks anyways.... It's just poor use of programming time to constantly tweak things already in the game, instead of adding actual new ideas some people have been requesting for years now. How many more times are they going to change the HUD? Is it finished yet? To be honest they never even actually ever listed all the changes that occured with Wintermute. We have been figuring the changes out on our own for the last month. They never released a change log for Wintermute, and if you go check the Master Change Log thread under News and Updates for August 1st it says something like "too many changes to list them all." Which isn't particularly helpful.... Holy crap I complain A LOT. I really don't mean to complain so much, but it's clear a lot of things are frustrating me with the game. I just want to see more stuff added, like more clothes crafting, and moose, and revisiting cured hides not weighing less, and then lowering crafted clothing weights (because some of them are ridiculous and don't make sense like rabbit mittens). Those changes are much more important to me than hiding the scent bars after a few seconds, and changing blood drops....
  13. It might work with batteries designed to be rechargeable.... Normal non-rechargeable batteries work by a chemical reaction. The reaction uses a finite amount chemicals stored in the battery. Once the chemical has reacted and changed states, adding electricity to the battery doesn't just reverse the reaction.... Have you ever recharged non-rechargeable batteries, or do you throw used batteries out like the rest of us? How regular batteries work: https://chem.libretexts.org/Core/Analytical_Chemistry/Electrochemistry/Case_Studies/Batteries%3A_Electricity_though_chemical_reactions How rechargeable batteries work: https://chem.libretexts.org/Core/Analytical_Chemistry/Electrochemistry/Case_Studies/Rechargeable_Batteries Determining the electric potential of a chemical battery and stoichiometry were the primary types of questions on my Quantitative Chemical Analysis exams....and it was my WORST subject in college. I needed A LOT of pain pills for my head too.... Stoichiometry: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoichiometry I still remember Avogadro's number is 6.022×10^23... That's the number of atoms/molecules in one mole of any element/substance..... Typically Stoichiometry and Avagadro's number are covered in High School Chemistry....I sucked at it then too....
  14. The idea of draining fuel from lanterns instead of only being able to refuel them is probably the best idea I have read by Nicko since I joined the forums. Good job, @nicko! Only being able to reclaim fuel by harvesting the lantern and destroying it, has been an annoyance to me since I started playing. Especially since it takes over an hour to harvest it and you get like one scrap metal. It's a very inefficient use of your time to get a little fuel out of a lantern.....
  15. Ok, @Patrick Carlson it's been more than a week since we last discussed the upcoming patch to fix the flare cache issue.... You and @Raphael van Lieropboth said "soon," but no exact ETA yet... Since it's been over a week more since then, are we any closer to this patch being released? Do we at least have an ETA? Couple more days? Another week? Or after everyone gets back from vacation this month....so like October? I just want to know if I will get to play The Long Dark this month, or if it's time for a new game....
  16. Troy, I was going to ask you if you were being facetious, because I showed his post so I could read it and it was a big bucket of hooey....but @JAFO got most of it already.... I guess I can still cover the scent bit.... So you harvest all the bear meat, and now you have like 30+ kilograms of fresh bear meat lying in the snow, or you have about 8 bags of meat and bones at about 8 kilograms a piece. Now you want to move it to your base as fast as possible. It won't attract wolves while lying on the ground, because of how the scent mechanic works. Wolves are only attracted to the scent when it is on your person....that's why they never just find and eat your carcass like Jafo just stated, and it's why they don't eat your food when you leave it outside in the snow. So you pick up as much meat as you can carry and still maybe run a bit, I wouldn't carry more than 40 kilos total for this reason. So at best you will be carrying 15-20 kilos of fresh meat or 2-3 meat bags. Why are you even bringing up how smelly meat bags are like it's an important factor to consider. In EITHER instance you will have 3+ scent bars....aka an astronomical amount of scent that isn't even displayed by the game because it only shows three bars at most... It would be normal to assume in either scenario of carrying 15 kilos of bear, or 3 meat bags, that every wolf in the game is traveling to your last smelled position. So get the heck out of there STAT, and hope it's safe when you get back. Hopefully you killed the animal close to a shelter....ESPECIALLY if it's a bear. Otherwise you should be prepared for wolves showing up....but at least you have bait The other thing you said about skinning and gutting the bear FIRST when you quarter it, isn't really accurate either. When you quarter a bear you are putting the meat in bags and leaving the hide and guts on the ground simultaneously. So the 2-ish hours to quarter it is for the whole thing. So at worst you are letting SOME the meat spoil for an additional hour by not carving all the meat out separately and first.... The additional hour is negligible....meat rots fast on a bear, but even when I slept for six hours first because I was exhausted all the meat was still over 50 condition which is fine, because cooking meat adds 50 condition to the meat when you cook it. So as long as you track the bear while it's bleeding out and quarter it soon after it drops you should be fine on condition either way. The meat in the meat bags should all be 70+ condition or higher. Once in bags it rots MUCH slower than when it's on the bear. Even after a full 24 hours of being in bags it only loses 10 condition at most....It also decays at the same speed inside and outside while in bags, so you can harvest the bags inside or outside. Once harvested the fresh meat decays far slower rate outside. So throw it outside if you aern't ready to cook it yet because you want to harvest the rest of the bags first.... The other thing Jafo said about hitting escape or cancel while cutting the meat off a carcass to get small pieces is also accurate. It doesn't have to be in meat bags to do this. On the animal you can still harvest 0.5 kilos at a time and then hit escape when the circle is 20% complete. I'm not sure this is even considered an exploit. If it was they would have removed the ability to do this long ago. Bait is better wasted in small pieces, and the cooking skill tradeoff is you get more pieces to raise your skill....but it still takes the same amount of time to cook it (and cooking takes 20 minutes a go). So you are burning a lot of wood and daylight to cook all those tiny chunks to raise your skill....
  17. I'm really hoping crafting in general is not "as is" and is being fleshed out. At least add a damn hat. But clothes crafting especially seems very unfinished. Like you should be able to craft items for all slots either with cloth or hide, and the hide clothing should have several different animal hide variants. If you want to see copious crafting in an early access game, check out Subnautica when you need a "The Long Dark break"....
  18. @JAFO, @GELtaz, and I have been playing Subnautica on Steam.... Not sure about them, but I'm playing until Hinterland fixes the flare cache at least. I'm hoping that's not a month from now after they return from vacation....
  19. Which one the gunshots one? I thought you just walk out on Mystery lake before or after checking the lake cabins.... Then there is like a dead body outside one of the lake cabins in the snow. I haven't done it, but I'm assuming after you find the dead body, you find a note or a clue or something and then do what your journal says....or what the note said....
  20. Mumbling? How does one mumble in text exactly? How do you know they DIDN'T get hypothermia first and then die? They most likely all did if there was no way to get heat and there was no solution to the problem. They most likely all went to bed after already freezing all day and night because they had no heat. Your proof isn't proof of anything other than they froze to death. They clearly didn't go to bed warm without any heat.... Your "proof" has nothing to do with the question in this debate. The question is if you go to bed warm and not freezing, would you wake up due to violent shaking aka shivering? The answer to that question is YES...duh...it's a common myth that you would not. About the blood drops how is it my graphics card if the same thing is happening to everyone else playing the game, most likely including you? I put the potential answer in my question by asking if it was a new change added by Wintermute? The answer was yes, they changed it. If you don't know the answer, say "I don't know my graphics on my computer is crap." Not declare it MUST be my graphics....that's making an uninformed assumption. Like you often appear to do. It's much more plausible that you are one of those people who simply cannot admit when they are wrong... Lastly slander is verbal....in text it's called libel. I don't recall committing slander because I don't recall ever talking to you.
  21. The only tidbit I wanted to add, is I hear the arrows are NOT in the target if you play on Interloper. I hear it's the same with any deer near hunter blinds that you sometimes find with an arrow and/or a broken arrow. On Interloper they take away those arrows too. In the dam behind the metal bulkhead door that went to the lower level before the dam was remodeled there was a couple arrows in the door and on the ground. I don't think those were in Interloper either. I'm not even sure they are there now on any playthrough...I haven't looked since the dam remodel. Are they still there? I want to say I found arrows in a new deer....pretty sure it was Broken Railroad....there are several new dead deer on that map (new because the whole map is new), I think one had an arrow or two. I can't remember if it was the deer by the hunter blind (probably) or the deer behind the Hunter's Lodge on the pond, or on the way to the cave back there sort of near the Hunters Lodge area (maybe). So basically on any playthrough except Interloper it's is(was?) possible to gather 8-10 arrowheads without forging any. Possibly more due to possible random loot drops when searching containers. Which is nice....it would be pretty ideal actually if you never randomly lost arrowheads....
  22. I don't know what he's going on about now @JAFO, already on my list. I found the article by Googling "freezing to death sleep myth." I don't have the time or patients for people who refute everything even after being presented with alternate evidence. There's a couple of those types in these parts.... Pretty sure he presented the same argument and linked the same things last time this was brought up by someone. If you start freezing to death after going to bed warm, you would start violently shivering in the beginning of the process which would wake you up....as it should. If you decide to ignore your body's warning about the situation and take no action like creating fire, turning on the heat, getting blankets, and then just go back to bed after hypothermia is setting in....then that's on you. That's how people freeze to death....
  23. Iceland's main exports are Eve Online and rotting fermented shark (Kæstur hákarl ) I believe.... Eve Online blows due to human pirate griefers, and I wish to try the shark....I've tried almost everything else that's disgusting. It's on my bucket list. The shark, not Eve Online....
  24. I don't usually get vertigo from a game, though I have felt it in real life. It's weird though, as a kid I never had vertigo. I was afraid of heights and falling, but looking down from up high never made me dizzy....or feel like I was falling. Now though, I seem to have developed some amount of vertigo... Maybe it was all the acid I took in college when going to raves...? Anyway, I am super carefully on that bridge, because I have read horror stories about players falling off....or some people would cross it too fast and "clip" through it.... I don't want to fall and die in Sandbox obviously....so I try really hard not to, lol. The tree limb before that train trestle almost got me once though....overconfidence....was going too fast. I didn't fall through....almost fell!
