didn't find any, and not much/any in BR & FM AFAIK.  If you are going to HRV my humble suggestion would be to then loot as much food as you can in Milton, head back towards trappers getting the coal in the transition cave, then it's worth making the trip across ML to ravine to stock up on birch bark.  Hopefully the extra prep time will tip the survival/exploration ratio in your favour when you do hit the airfield.  Good luck!

I've found a few memento notes but have yet to follow them up and get the loot. that's my next target, although of course I got moose stomped as soon as I got out of the far territory so currently holed up in BR lodge...

My save is parked in ML atm so I can easily stock up on birch bark before moving on.  Thanks again for the tip!  Also, the snow shelter tip.  It's been years since I've used one but I enjoyed using them in my first runs when interloper was released, where they were critical.  You've got me excited. :D

Back at you, a tip about memento notes.  Memento notes come in two flavors - "cache" and "hint."  Hints lead to an important place like the transition cave to another region.  Caches lead to an hidden + unlocked loot spot, or a locked box.  Where a key is needed I've found it next to the note.   The note can be in a different zone, zing!

The map tooltips in AC > TWM > PV said which type of memento was, very handy.  The tooltip for the note I found in ML had the first words of the note instead.  Since we've had a number of patches to the game since I started this run I'm not sure whether the ML note represents a new way of showing the markers, or just a different implementation by region.  In any case, you can usually deduce which it is from the context of the note.

  2. Good stuff.  I'm still working my way to the new region.  I started in AC for the carry bonus and crampons and I've been slowly working my way west.  The memento notes have been a fun distraction, and the changes to the loot system mean I have to search farther afield for the gear I want.  I finally have weapons, but the moose seem to be have evaporated.  >_<  So maybe a detour to HRV for the satchel before I head into the far away parts of Great Bear.

@Valuable Hunting KnifeThanks for the tips.  Re birch bark, can I find it in FA?

  3. My current run is a custom game that's mostly Interloper settings (to keep it interesting) with Voyageur loot (to learn about the new system).

I'm finding what I need, just have to search for it more.  The old places aren't reliable and stuff is turning up in places that it never appeared before.  The loot in the new locations feels more variable too.  Small sample size, but I've tested it by spawning in the same region a few times.

I like the changes!  A lot!

The game feels fresh again.  Instead of a few coffee-fueled days of sprinting through the world to known loot locations, I'm taking my time again.  Settling down for a few days to check out the surrounding area before moving to the next area.  Finding a key piece of gear feels very rewarding.  The surprises are pretty rewarding too.  New corpses (yay, more feathers!), tools and weapons in spots they've never been in the past.  Even coffee in new and unexpected places.  \o/

I've only found two memento caches so far, and they are surprisingly good.  Not simply the loot itself, but the lore.  One had pretty funny loot (although still useful), the other had OMG Jackpot! loot.  I like the memento "hints" too, although I'm still in the old regions so I'm familiar with every place so far.  But they are really useful places to guide newer players too, and the lore is welcome.

  4. I had this happen first day of the patch.  Left an ice cave in HRV and ended up in the NW normal cave in HRV.  New character and clothes, without the loot I'd picked up.  I didn't report because my game was still not right with other issues, so I reinstalled and verified.  Then I tried a couple times to repro, but couldn't.

  5. The rope from Homesteader's Respite in Ash Canyon is invisible, except at the top attachment point.  Although invisible, the rope is still usable; I dropped a book at the bottom so I could find it to climb back up.

    Occurred on build 2.04 105741 S

My quality settings are on Ultra.  The only other graphics glitch I've noticed is the double ropes in TWM as described above by mfuegemann.

Well now I can't get it to go to my main display, keeps going to my little display >:(

I use multiple monitors and the game launched on another monitor for me too.  I moved it to the main monitor with the windows key shortcut WIN + shift + arrow (left or right).  Restarted the game, and now it remembers the correct monitor like before.  I'm guessing it's just a one-time setup thing.

just a heads up folks, I had to sign out and back in to steam to get the update to start installing after purchasing, seems to be downloading ok now though...

Thanks.  This worked for me too.  I got the "new DLC has been added to your account" message, but it didn't start installing until I restarted Steam.

  8. Random start, but not Interloper this time -- maybe Voyager?  I want to get a feel for the character of the changes to loot and animal spawns, cooking, fishing.  (Not sure all of those changes are in for the first batch of content.)  Also get a feel for the new affliction and the new teas if they're already in game.  Then reroll, gear up and start a trek into the Far Territory.

  9. I loved just about everything shown in the trailer.  New places, new game mechanics, new models.  Same classic TLD vibe.

This cabin, gorgeous setting.  Looks pretty remote, so I found myself wondering how practical it might be to stock with food and firewood.  Then I remembered the travois.  Ohhhhh, I get it now!

It looks to be quite nice on the inside, too.

This is a beautiful and interesting view too, maybe the airfield from a distance?  Some changes to the campfire too, or maybe another type of campfire.

I don't think I could feel more hyped.  Dec. 5th can't come too fast!

Was there already an active Ward Glyph in the region?

This is the issue I'm asking about.  I visited the the FM campfire, looted, warmed a coffee, picked up the page and left.  I assumed the ward would expire as soon as I got out range.

My personal ward failed to work during my next visit to FM.  I'm sure I didn't leave the range of the personal ward until it was obvious it wasn't working.

So is there something more I must do to get a campfire's ward to stop working once I'm done with it?

  11. I decided to finally try the Darkwalker challenge and found myself in a good situation to use the Ward glyph.

I was fleeing the Darkwalker and bumbled into a wolf.  A minute later he set off the Lure I'd placed about 300m behind me.  So I quickly placed a Ward and started to do some first aid on my wounds.  Several seconds later the Darkwalker distance appeared on my screen, counting down from 200m despite the ward bar style showing.  I was standing directly on top of the glyph.  Some keystone cops type sprinting first aid followed, naturally.

The zone was FM.  I'd already looted the FM fire/page, and had just arrived back in zone after a side trip to Bleak Inlet to pick up that page.

Any advice on how to get the Ward glyph to work?  Seems like I'm not doing it right.

  12. For me this is by far the best episode.  Really good, engaging story.  The characters feel more fully fleshed out and individual than in previous episodes.

But the big thing episode 4 gets right: the tricky balance between "questing" and survival.  We still need to fetch stuff for the story, but it's structured in a way (a few longer trips) with nearly complete freedom for exploration and survival gameplay in between.  And the story tasks are more meaningful.  In past episodes tasks were framed as "do this for me and maybe I'll help you."  In episode 4 when you do a story task, you're not just a go-fer.  You take actions that promote your character's goals.  These longer solo periods are balanced with a deeper exploration of the story and characters when we return to the prison.  It feels rewarding, whether you're coming or going.

Great ending too, very exciting.  I can't wait for the final episode.  Thanks Hinterland, this is a gem.

    WARNING: SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 4!

    Dear Hinterland-Team,

I'm not a native speaker, nor a very active member of this forum, but I want to write this so badly.

    You. Are. Great.

I just finished Episode 4 and it was worth the long, dark wait.

    It was glorious.

Despite the long times of waiting between this episodes, you manage to get me involved again in seconds. I don't even know where to start this properly, so, I write everything as it comes to my mind.

    1. The Voices

There are on point. I don't know the cast well, but you made a great choice. I can only think of two or three sentences from Will and Franklin that might have been spoken a little more emotionally, but that's just me nitpicking. All the lines sound so smooth, so well crafted so ... natural. The same goes for ...

    2. The animation and cutscenes

In every episode it gets better. I was stunned during the end scene with Jace and later during the fight with Mathis. Let it be the tremble in Wills arm during the fight or Jaces Lips, when she nearly froze to death. I noticed all of that and was mindblown, how good you guys became in this kind of stuff.

Even the little things like moving the valves or Wills rubbing hands as he enters the brutal cold again. It all looks so good! Great job!

    3. Gameplay

    So. Smooth.

I remember, a few years ago, the game felt a little ... unwieldy, maybe even clunky sometimes. But especially in this episode that feeling was gone completely. You polished the game really well in terms of being "nice to play".

I have to admit though, after I found the fourth hunting rifle I checked whether I really play on medium difficulty ^-^" But maybe I just got lucky.

Oh, and I want to say that the whole pipe-section made a lot of fun! Nice riddle! And you still managed to give (at least me) this feeling of ... mild despair. For example after the mine collapses. The first thing I noticed - just trough sounds - were the ongoing aurora and my first thought was: "Oh f*** ... I have to go back during an aurora? Through all these wolves? I'm dead."

Which is a great thing by the way. It feels so challenging! Like we're really achieving something and not just playing a game. I even got to know a whole new emotion: Mixed relief. I was so glad to reach the prison again, felt safety for ... a second, maybe, after I closed the door behind me and then: "Why I'm glad? Mathis is waiting ... from one wolf to another."

It just occured to me, I have a tiny, really tiny complaint ... The first time you come back, the game tells you to hide your things. But ... which things? During the entire episode, I didn't dare to exchange Will's clothes because I was afraid that my nice, warm shirt would be taken away from me. Maybe you could say "Hide all your things, except what you wear on your skin" or something like that :3

But thats just my two cents.

    4. Story

    Oh. My. God.

    I'm SO involved!

This is exactly how I feel about Episode 4, but you've said is much better than I could.  Even during the initial story scenes I was thinking "Wow, the animation got really good.  These characters are so distinct, and genuinely Canadian -- not a stereotype but the kind of folks you actually meet.  And Matthis... not my kind of guy but also not one-dimensionally "bad because he's bad".   I didn't read the whole post yet because I'm not very far in the story yet.  But I probably agree about the rest too. ;)

  14. I played a mix of male and female for a long time -- with voice volume slider completely off.  Hinterland removed that setting around the time of the 1.0 launch so I was listening to the voice acting again.  I found I liked the female better (except where it was repetitive "I hope no one needs this") for the reasons others have already mentioned.  As an experienced player the non-verbal cues aren't helpful (and sometimes they are an unwelcome distraction  * lip-smacking when thirsty *) so I was thrilled when they brought the voice volume slider back.

If you're grinding for Blizzard Walker feat, story mode is the way to go - I got mine in less than an hour (from 34% initially to 100%). But if you're not into grinding feats, then good luck because it's gonna take a really long time.

Now you tell me. :D I did mine a while back (pre-WE) playing an hour a day -- which was all I could bear due to the boredom -- for weeksPV was twice as much progress per "blizzard hour" than other zones, but it was still a gigantic grind.

No regrets though.  It's a good feat for Winter's Embrace.  Also for Interloper, depending on how you use blizzards.

Items placed in the world don't disappear when they hit 0%, that only happens when you put it into a container.  It is quite possible to pick up a 0% item off the ground or a shelf or something, and in fact this has happened many many times during Winter's Embrace for me.  Not with syrup specifically, but sardines, condensed milk, soda, cured leather, energy bars, etc.  Save 'em for dinner, eat 'em before bed, pop some antibiotics and sleep it off.

Thanks (and duh!).  I got this game 5+ years ago and I guess I haven't kept up to date with the changes to the loot system.  Back then, speed-looting the whole world before the loot poofed was a thing.

BTW I deleted my earlier, misinformation-laden post because I now believe you can not get the badge in Survival mode.   I looted and drank 25 syrups in survival mode games: no badge.  Then drank 17 syrups in WE games (the first 8 I drank during my WE playthrough to day 25) and got the badge.  So my earlier rant was pointless as well as wrong.  :D
