I also miss the brand. I'm sure there's a reason for removing it. I just wonder what it was...

But for those few moments you were floating on cloud 9?
Was your survivor lighter than air? Or perhaps have a sinking feeling?
Was there some bad granola in the plane that resulted in a bad trip?
I'll stop now.

I started breaking up a crate. About half way through that process an aurora must have started, and my crate must have - unknown to me - been right next to an electrical cable. So I was instantly electrocuted and killed in the middle of my crate-breaking. One second I'm watching the progress bar, the next second I'm dead. It's only because I've been electrocuted there before that I was even able to work out what happened!
Anyway, it's probably the most unlikely way that I've ever died in TLD, due to the specific combination of circumstances. I can't really imagine it happening again. Maybe it was karma for gaming the mechanics a bit?
That is super bizarre!

I really like the idea of a compass as an aurora predictor. That would certainly add something to deciding whether you should risk being out late.

And you're right, near indefinite survival is certainly possible. @Drifter Man had a post on a 1000 day run that ended due to the time involved and a game update that deleted the save. I think he got over 800 days in the end though and that was confined to mostly one map (with the occasional looting expedition). For the original post see "1000 Days in the Dam" below

And self imolation is a pain! I've almost done that to myself more than once (at the cost of my boots on one occasion too!)

I can attest that I've picked up a piece of birch bark only once in who knows how many playthroughs. Once I saw what it could be used for, I said "nyeh" as I chucked it and I never wasted inventory space on it again.
I for one am still hoping for birch bark tea

If you're looking for the "melt snow" option it is only available when interacting with a lit fire. Furthermore, there needs to be enough time left on your fire to melt the snow. For instance, you won't be able to melt 3 L in 20 min.
